Hey guys,
My gf really enjoys DB but says literally every time she has played she’s had to put up with offensive statements and name calling etc. and its making her want to quit.
What can we do about it?

I’d say tell her to stop being a professional victim and putting so much stock into what random internet nobodies has to stay and just enjoy the game.
If social acceptance is something you need to enjoy a video game for yourself, might I suggest some casual mmo titles that would be overall much better suited for her? Sorry, but it’s the truth…
and no it wouldn’t bother me if I was in her shoes because I get it too…and it doesn’t bother me. Offense is always taken, not given.

You are very right mate, but even though it is a game, personality shines through. Same as it does on a forum when we talk to each other. It really does stand out. The more insecure a person is, the more they will try and provoke and intimidate people (or just flat out try and get a reaction), because their insecurities about their lack of dominance in real life will trigger them to identify weaker people online so they can bully them (so they can feel good about how worthless they really are).
And this is especially true online (even more so than in real life), because there are fewer consequences. These weak little wimps don’t need to fear a broken jaw (just to carry on that particular meme), they feel safe, so it makes them worse, and the more cowardly they are, the more of a bellend they will act when they feel safe, but it changes nothing, they are still weak little worms looking to dominate you. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you won because you were the bigger man and walked away, I guarantee you they will think they won, and so will any observers (and in my earlier point about picking up hot chicks, they will lose interest in you the moment you back down). Be STRONG!
@immenseWalnut But this is the thing… I don’t need to be the “bigger man”. :L I really just don’t care, and that is the case with a lot of people. Let the kids scream and shout, argue all they please, and walk away. I don’t care if they think they “won”, I have bigger problems to deal with than some egotistical asshole on the internet feeling like the “big man”. I’m just sayin’, haha.
Like I said, I get your point, but I really don’t agree. I’ll assert my dominance where I need it, which is not on a video game, heh…
That last statement pretty much sums it up, pick and choose when and how to do it, the trick is learning when you NEED to do it. Sometimes ignoring them is the best way, other times insulting them is etc. But there are times when walking away isn’t the best option, those are the times you need to fight back. Even though you wont get anything out of it, it becomes a pattern of behaviour that is worth having because you will use it in real life when it does matter.
Anyway, this has been a very fun discussion, but I am not sure I can say anything more that I haven’t already said, people will either get it or they wont. But as always, I happily leave that decision to them, they are ultimately responsible for their own lives.
Man, I’m really sorry to hear that’s happening. I personally think girl gamers are some of the coolest people. But you gotta realize, this is the internet. People are jerks on the internet. And this is a video game, gamers are even bigger jerks.
I play DB with a few different girls fairly often and they use VOIP in game and there really hasn’t been too many issues. And pretty much anybody that gets stupid gets muted by all of us. Basically, make sure she knows how to mute people and you guys should be good to go.
I feel that she is making a big deal out of it, or she is causing a big fight.
I am a troll in game, I love to talk smack to the enemy team. But I also don’t complain when people call me “a fucking faggot bitch retarded whore”.
So…
A. She is talking about something she shouldn’t
Example:
Her: I think that people should have the chose to do abortions.
Other person: I think you are a @%%@(%@)(%@)%(%@ and go to hell baby killer!
Or…
B. She is too sensitive
Other person: Get Rekt Nub.
Her: …uh… I think a picture better speaks.

OR!
C: She is making it present.
Example:
Her: I am a girl
Other person: OMG! NO ONE CARES! SHUT THE FUCK UP AND PLAY!
I think it’s C, but I have caused many fights in game, and never have I seen someone pick on someone, for being a gender. I know, because I try to stop that. Just like I defend people who pick on non-english players. Which I will leave for another time.
D: She talks with VOIP as typing wastes time.
Her: They are rushing B. (Execution)
Other person: “OMG! It’s a girl, go to hell.” or “OMG! It’s a girl, you have to be bad at the game.” I can go on with the responses when someone hears a girl talking.

Interesting… I am going to be 100, and maybe I am just lucky, but I have never seen this, ever. I have been playing MMO’s since I was 13. o.O

Highly unlikely but still possible.
If you can’t handle banter you shouldn’t be playing an online game
Get good or toughen up. You are always a potential subject to harassment in online games. That’s it. You will always meet people that call you bad names.
Exactly. I mute anyone who is just blabbering non-sense. I only accept those people with light-humor but still concentrate on the gameplay and have team support.

I played a game yesterday with a friend and she has had some harassment in the past but now she mutes those people that are harassing her instead of arguing with them. Yesterday we had such a guy in our team. Problem for him was that almost our entire team existed out of friends of her. => We kicked him.
She usually plays with us so the harassment is usually very minor. Also I don’t get these remarks that some guys make like: “Hey look a girl she must be sh*t at the game.”. She is a level 7 player but She is really good at this game. Honestly, she’s better than me which is another example that a higher lvl doesn’t mean that you’re automatically better than the lower level players. Still we used to play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Section 8 Prejudice and Brink a lot together so it’s not so surprising that she knows how to play objectives in an objective based game.
Then we had another game where a guy was typing stupid stories in chat instead of playing the game. => kicked him as well. I mean if he doesn’t want to play the game, there are others who do want to participate. And I think they deserve his spot more than he did. If you want to write down your stories then write a book but don’t spam a chat in a MP game.
