Getting a feel for the new editor (where is it?)

(a_n00b) #1

Hello,

If the new editor is freely available can you post a link to it. It seems to be one of those hard to find things.

I hear with some trepidation that it closely resembles Radiant :?, if so does it now support multiple cameras like Valve’s Hammer editor always did???

Many thanks

editor should be available end of Sept, beginning of Oct

The editor is basically Radiant (albeit rewritten from the ground up). The ETQW version supports multiple cameras.

Are there any other features you consider important? Having used both, I find Radiant somewhat more powerful than Hammer, but your mileage may vary.

Here is some screenshots from the mapeditor in:
The Making of the Making of Quake Wars: Enemy Territory (Dev Diary #5)

 Good ol’ Radiant!

I see the buttons for the new stamp and road placement tools. Good stuff!

The option to choose between QeRadiant and GtkRadiant style camera controls would be nice, since I know people who prefer one or the other. Personally, I love the GtkRadiant camera controls, just feels more natural.

someone convince Wils to make a dev blog with new screenshots of the map editor

I think Wils mentioned all the re-writing of GTK in the dev diary somewhere.

I feel like nitpicking:

  1. It was jRAD
  2. It’s dev diary #5 on GameSpy
  3. He modified QeRadiant4, (Also called Doom 3 Edit) not GTKRadiant.

Thank you for your replies.

I have seen the Dev Diary response posted all over the forum  Yet people seem to talk as if there making maps for their mods.

I guess Radiant does have more features and you can manage larger projects, but I find the very basics tricky and annoying.

MULTIPLE CAMERAS ( thank you for including them  )

With Hammer I can click on a camera and jump to either side of a wall to make sure things line up ok. Plus, if I want to make a new one i just draw a line in the general direction of where I want to look.

I couldn’t find any multiple camera support in Radiant and although you can bookmark places in Quark, it is still clumsy having to cycle through them all.

I haven’t tried all the variations of Radiant, I think I used GTK?

ADDITIONAL - GRAB HANDLES FOR BRUSHES

I also found it easier to select and deselect brushes in Hammer (no need to hold down keys), and was frustrated not to see any grab handles for stretching brushes. (Even MS Word has grab handles  )

Hope this helps people starting map making and making the switch from Hammer.

Bringing back the 3d-view navigation GTKRadiant 1.4 (and 1.5?) had would be very welcome. It worked almost like spectator mode in ET and felt very natural to me.

Did later versions of Radiant get rid of this?! I never used any later versions but I don’t see why this would have been removed, it was perfect for what was required.

yep, the radiant camera is great, always moved around looking for bugs etc.

You could not get this camera mode in the editors for quake4 and doom3 (unless you used GTKradiant 1.5 for them) for anyone familiar with the GTK radiant camera this camera is very confusing

but for reading the dev diaries i think there are 4 camera modes include one similar to traditional GTK camera. There is also one that acts as if the user is walking though the level, that should be interesting

This is very important for me, it make me work more efficiently.

Sounds like good news, indeed!

Pretty much all version of GtkRadiant (if not all - can’t remember about the first few versions) had the mouselook camera controls. Doom3Edit and Quake4Edit are based off of the earlier QeRadiant builds which were missing mouselook.

Ah right, nver edited Q4 or D3.

You don’t have to hold down keys in Radiant to select a brush… only brush face’s or if you are selecting multiple brushes which works just like Windows (ctrl or shift + select).

I’ve worked a bit in Maya which has handles, and I think the Radiant way is better. If you want to drag a box out longer (which is dragging a face in effect), you just do it… no need to select ‘Faces’ and then grab handle, and then drag.
