Get SMART Series: The HUD [Episode 4]

They really should put a respawn timer in the HUD atleast on the PC version…

  • You can time pushes as a team when attacking
  • Leave dead players to respawn if timer is on 1 instead of risking your life to revive them
  • You can time when to go forward and attack as a defender or when to sit back…
  • You can be more useful to your team by spending the more time alive than dead due to the point above…
  • You can time when to capture spawn points / do objectives

I just don’t see why you would not include a respawn timer, because you rarely come across players who just infight respawn for the hell of it. It takes more skill to incorporate the respawn times into your gameplay rather than just running around and relying on random luck. It’s more fun to be playing than waiting for 20seconds to spawn. And it is up to players if they want to use the respawn timer, not like they are forced to use it…

If it isn’t included, i guess we will have to hope the modding community can add it into Brink pro for competition gameplay as it is a vital aspect to the game.

I thought the timer comes up when you die so you can either wait till till the last second for a medic or just redeploy when its almost up.

(trollface) #43

I don’t know what the hell the crawling on the floor at 2:42 is about but it looks ridiculous.
I’m guessing the blue one slided the other one to the ground but it looked like he just sat down on his ass and then the other one did the same thing.

(Schwarzeis) #44

It does!

But right now the current topic is about having it visible on the HUD when you’re alive and able to shoot

… so you know when you can die with perfect timing :stuck_out_tongue:

(Mustkunstn1k) #45

This should definitely be an option on the PC version.
PS: At first I thought you guys were talking about the enemy respawn timer. I used that in ET all the time (obviously you had to time it yourself first). I remember how people on ventrilo always yelled out the respawn timer if they got it so we all synched up. :stuck_out_tongue:

If it’s possible to mod or add add-ons, then there probably will be someone doing that if there wont be any option for the egg timer :stuck_out_tongue:

(Mustkunstn1k) #47

Maybe like a FRAPS-like application where you synch the timers and it will always be in the corner of your window. :stuck_out_tongue:

But yeah, it will probably be built into promod etc. Man, the original HUD for ET was pretty bad when compared to the one in Promod. At least one of those presets.

(trollface) #48

Well i wouldnt mind a respawn counter that much, as long as there is no equivalent of /kill.

I, just like everyone else who played competitively in RTCW/ET, frequently used /kill, even though it ruins gameplay and undermines several aspects of the game like the role of medics. Simply because it was an exploit too valuable to ignore. Some may call it smart and awareness, as in keeping an eye on when to and not to do it, but i think there are better ways of promoting that type of skill.

If people are left to teamkilling, priming nades or putting themselves at risk to be able to respawn in time, thats totally acceptable in comparison to how effective /kill is (for those that doesn’t know, it basically means that with the push of a hotkey you kill yourself and tap out, ready to respawn in the blink of an eye).

If theres any upside to movement in BRINK being slower than in ET it is that getting to the objective takes longer, surely a deterring factor in this regard.

(CapnHowdy21) #49

Well I’m not sure how it worked it ET, but if you get revive by a medic in Brink, you appear to keep all your buffs. This makes it a bit more complicated then simply which will get you in the fight quicker.

Great video

We had a guy who had a timer that started a countdown 5 seconds before they sapwned. Big red letters filling up the lower part of your screen, probably did more harm than good tbh. After a couple of respawns you get a fair idea of when they are about to spawn even without such things.

I disagree with this. I feel like there’s always an advantage to raising incapacitated players that are more than likely closer to an objective than to make them respawn and run all the way back to wherever they are. Not to mention, it’s an extra meat shield for you to survive longer.

In ET and QW there were extenuating circumstances to this, like if a player wouldn’t be spawning back with any ammo etc - but Brink fixes this by giving the incapacitated player the choice to revive or respawn. So again, there really is no reason medics shouldn’t be trying to give the option for players to revive, 1 second to respawn or not.

I do however prefer to have a spawn timer, for the other reasons you suggested. Especially if there are forward spawn points, so you can time a forward respawn etc.

(PopeTackler) #53

I don’t know why people are saying that there should be a respawn timer on-screen at all that, at least on the PC version. Why would it need to be on the PC version and not the consoles?

Personally I couldn’t care less, mind you. Having a respawn timer on-screen even when you’re alive adds nothing. When you throw someone a syringe to revive them, they still have the choice whether to revive or whether to respawn.

(amazinglarry) #54

I disagree, for the same reason I stated above. It adds some tactical play if you’re able to time a forward spawn capture, just as an example. There was always a risk (in my opinion) to capturing a forward spawn at the very beginning of your team’s spawn cycle, as it gives the other team more time to re-capture it without the risk of your team spawning. Capturing it with ~5 seconds to spawn almost guarantees back-up.

But, maybe it won’t be the same in Brink. I honestly haven’t read that much into all the mechanics, so my point may be moot.

(Nailo) #55

Has it been stated if it is individual respawns, or team respawns?

If the team respawns all at once, and it’s ~20 seconds a respawn, then you could use the timer in the upper right to judge when people respawn. If it’s every 20 sec then at :00, :20, and :40 you can expect respawns.

If it is done solo… then disregard my post.

(minininja) #56

looks like it will be easy to use

(Schwarzeis) #57

Becuase some people here are PC Elitists, who deem the consoles and it’s users inferior, not saying that all PC users are like this, but some are - and I believe more than half of us in this thread has seen a PC Elitist on this forum

Good point!

(DarkangelUK) #59

That’s total crap… it’s cos console users can’t count!

Nah I don’t see why you would have it on PC and not on console (or why SD wouldn’t put it on console anyway). Being that they’re coming from their own games that both had respawn timers, they know the advantage of it on any platform… unless they drop quite a few IQ points when that controller is in their hands… I KID! I KID!
