GeForce6 /fps question

(Etnies) #1

I just upgraded my graphics card from GeForce4 125mb, to GeForce6 256mb and i havent noticed much of a difference in my fps, hardly any actually, i read somewhere in one of reyal’s post i think it was that ET is mainly prosscessor based and not graphics card but surely there must be some difference? maybe in my settings or something?

windows xp
512 ram

which geforce6 card did you upgrade to? and if its one of the cheaper ones I doubt you’d see much change anyway as, as you have already said eT is highly CPU intensive

the 6200, i dont lag as much with it so far, but havent really played that much et with tho.

Then i hope for you you didn’t get a 6200 Turbo Cache. If so you probably have 64 MB now if you haven’t changed yet. If you did you need 192 MB from ur RAM to get the 256 MB and you will have left 320 of your 512 MB of RAM. Also try this in teh console: \com max_fps 500 , you can chech what ur max fps is when using \com max_fps . It can have a max of 85 as default. Then the 6200 isn’t very much better then ur geforce 4 probably xcept for the directx 9.0 support. ET doesn’t use the 256 MB of teh card as well…

I did go from 30-40 fps 800x600 medium on my geforce 2 mx400 64MB to over 100 fps with ATI Radeon 9600 pro EZ 256 MB running 1024x768 highest settings.
I also have tried a Geforce 4 mx440 of a neighbour, it got 40-50 fps at 800x600 medium.
As I think your geforce 6200 would be around the same specs as my ATI, you would get around 120 fps (nvidia being better in openGL, still it depends on ur proc as it is my bottleneck now…

Rest of my system:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB DDR266 (when i had Geforce2) or 1024 MB DDR266 (now i have radeon 9600)
40 GB 7200rpm HDD, win XP pro SP2

well … lets say you have a p4 3.0 ghz …and you are running ET with a tweaked config… (r_picmip 3 / low detail / etc etc) … there will not be alot difference in running with a ti4600 card…and running with a 7800gtx.

You will see the difference if u set it up to highest detail, 16xAA antriosophic filtering…(truform if ati)…and all that “extra-eyecandy stuff”… THEN you will start to see a difference in FPS…

The nvidia 5/6/7200 range are budget cards and a bit pants to be honest. If you had a geforce 4 ti card you were better off with it, but if you had a g4 mx then its a bit of an imprevement but not much. Id bring the card back and get a 6600GT if you can afford it, if not try a radeon 9800pro good entry level card.

Still a radeon is slower in openGl, i would recommend a reg 6600 then anyways. And Geforce FX 5 series are oldies, 6200 and 6600 become budget now, 6600GT is still pretty good, 50% better then 6600 and probably about twice as fast as a 6200. 6800 series are mid end and 7800 series are high end right now. Ur statement that 6 series are budget is wrong, there is too much difference in performance between a 6200 TC and 6800Ultra, or do you say that it is only a few fps in game (not even mentioning 6800Ultra in SLI)?

Then ET isnt as CPU depended as said. I now have my geforce 2 in my 350 MHz PC. I still get 25-30 fps on low 640x480 with 256 MB ram and windows XP Pro SP2

Could someone tell me what changes to make in the nvidia settings menu, maybe give an fps boost? id be well happy at steady 76 its almost there now, but not quite yet.

nVidia control panel has ET specific settings

curious. Do you know anything else about your PC specs?

CPU make/model? mobo make/model?
for instance… do you have an agp 8x motherboard?

I recently had a buddy who is less computer savy call me the other day with POOR performance on every game he played, and he’s running 1gb RAM on a AMD Athlon 3200+ Barton core with a 6800gt. Not the best system in the world, but not to shabby either. Turned out when he was messing with things in the bios(he claims a power outage changed his settings. lol), he accidentally had forced his agp speed to 2x.

just a suggestion, when everything else seems hunky dorey the problem might be something simple.

we could help more if we had more info, though. Goood Luck!
