Gamescom preview

(BomBaKlaK) #1

So yesterday I read the interview from NoFrag (biggest community about FPS in france)
they play BRINK at the game’scom and the preview was really hard !!!

http://www.nofrag.com/2010/aou/19/35443/

They say :

  • “The game turned on PC, but as is often the case in the GamesCom, we were forced to play with gamepads of X360.”
  • “heavy animation of the smart”
-" the game is slower than ET and ETQW"
  • “A good little game nervous wait until a title with a little more depth.”
  • “It is aliased below the 60 frames per second (as opposed to Rage) and far from impressive. In fact, the game is quite runny, like the Singularity and its textures have a loading delay. One imagines that Brink was not running with the best graphics options to minimize the risk of crashes, which happened frequently anyway.”

well …

Do we organise mass suicide ?

“t is aliased below the 60 frames per second (as opposed to Rage) and far from impressive. In fact, the game is quite runny, like the Singularity and its textures are three pellets to load”

Anyone want to offer a better translation?

yes it’s a google trad  !! the textures have a loading delay !
google trad don’t know the french “argo”

i’m guessing the optimisation isn’t finished yet, silly thing to judge an unfinished game on. the other things are criticisms expressed by most hardcore fps fans who are alienated a little by change. i wouldn’t be too worried.

(BomBaKlaK) #5

Yeah it’s the same for me ! but just to notice the thing

splashdamage fan boy i’am !!!

(potkettleblack) #6

Simply stating what the game is like in its current state.
Wouldnt get too defensive

(Apples) #7

So its OK to judge an infinished product just when the review is good?

Ok Ok I’m off nao…

(AnthonyDa) #8

What they are saying, is that the games seems to runs at 30fps, which makes it really slow/choppy compared to RAGE seen the day before.

Also, they are saying that SMART animation are so slow that you’ll get shot and be dead every time you’ll use it to climb a wall. (and they were playing with gamepad, I imagine that it’s even worse with mouse&kb)

They also says that the game isn’t really looking good, graphics wise.

And last but not least, the maps seems really small and lacks a lot of tactical approach compared to ET titles. The learning curve seems to be really small and that probably means that you’ll get bored of the game after a couple of weeks.

i seem to get taken the wrong way on these forums a lot. the original post/translation made it seem like they were writing off the game because of the errors, rather than just commenting on the current state of affairs months before release. i suppose if i was fluent in french i would’ve understood better, ha.

My French is a bit rusty, but here’s a decent shot at normalized English…

When you come from the Rage presentation and you [take a close look at] Brink, it does you bad. The artistic style isn’t bad, but it doesn’t have the visual impact: It’s aliased, [runs below the level of] 60 frames per second (unlike Rage) and [is] far from being impressive. In fact, the game is completely sloppy, in the [style] of Singularity, and its textures [load slowly as if weighted down]. You [can] imagine that Brink was not running with optimal graphics quality in order to reduce the risk of crashes, which happened frequently anyway.

Je crois que tout le monde a son opinion!

Gah, I really hope the new rendering engine will allow for proper anti-aliasing on the PC. Too many games today–notably those running on UE3 and other engines using deferred lighting–lack native AA implementation. Would anyone from SD mind shedding some light on the situation?

(hideinlight) #12

What kind of pc’s did it run on? What kind of FPS does the devs expect pc players to play with?

Also I would think that if they did a presentation on RAGE that they would obviously use the fatest pc they could get their hands on?

Oh and what FPS is plashdamage aiming for Xbox360 and PS3?

The conclusion is less negative:

Conclusion : La preview est peut-être sévère, mais après avoir joué pendant plus d’une demi-heure au multi de Brink, on ne peut pas dire qu’il y ait grand chose de marquant. Ca se laisse jouer sans peine et je risque d’y passer plusieurs dizaines d’heures en multi, mais le résultat n’est malheureusement pas aussi exceptionnel qu’on l’aurait espéré.

Conclusion: [This] preview is perhaps severe, but after having played Brink multiplayer for more than half an hour, we can’t say that there was anything remarkable. It allows you to play painlessly, and I run the risk of spending dozens of hours playing multiplayer, but the end result is unfortunately not as exceptional as we would haved hoped for…

so they’re basically saying, it doesn’t live up to the high hopes people had, it’s just going to be an average game like BFBC2 / COD.
Fun to play, easy to get into the game, but the gameplay won’t keep you playing.

(PapaBearFSM) #15

I´ve played BRINK a lot of time and I love it ! Its looks more like ET as ET:QW ! But it was for me so new to play with the Xbox360 Controller … Thx at the Bethesda Team and THX to Paul Wedgewood for the nice Talk ! Sory for my english I try my best ! ^^

(tokamak) #16

The maps are small indeed but that doesn’t mean they’ve got a lot of spatial variation within them. ETQW has big maps, sure, but the W:ET maps were way more complex. Fighting in tight confinements instead of huge surroundings means that you skirmish over every square feet (and with SMART dare I say cubic feet) instead of having to hold yourself up on the few choke points ETQW maps offer.

Let’s face it, all we have seen from the maps were fragments where one route was taken, ignoring all other paths. I can’t say Brink maps have a lot of tactical aproach nor can I say that they lack them. We simply don’t know much about it.

I certainly do hope there will be a balanced amount of routes in a map, and no ‘railway’ feel like in TF2.

(AnthonyDa) #17

Thx captain obvious! Now read the preview (or posts talking about it, or the translation) again and you’ll see that testers are saying that the tiny maps don’t have a lot of different path, the complexity of the map is near zero.

(tokamak) #18

Re-check your sources before you call names

As an alternative to ET: Quake Wars, and closed with levels far less tactical.

Very dubious what is meant here, the only justification seems to be the lack size and open space.

Less complex and less tactical Quake Wars Brink offers only infantry engagements.

The lack of vehicles does in no way make a game less tactical than one with. Case in point: ETQW vs WET.

In fact, it is neither more nor less an adaptation of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory console.

I rest my case.

(AnthonyDa) #19

Let’s just quote some other part of the article …

Comme une alternative à ET: Quake Wars, avec des niveaux fermés et beaucoup moins de tactique.

L’aspect tactique est assez simple et le jeu ne propose pas beaucoup de tricks

Enjoy your google translate and then read the news comment.

Too much work, my French sucks enough to make anything I say on this sound silly and google translate doesn’t work in such small segments. From the overall translation I’m rather underwhelmed by this guy’s opinion, I rather see someone being critical about it with actual arguments.
