Game suddenly stuck in Download cycle..osx 10.8.5

(Pakrat) #1

Hello all… First time poster here…
Have been playing ET for years on my clans server (the =OF= clan etpub) and last week, the game suddenly gets stuck trying to download a file called nightlybuild-etpubc 20120415 pk.3 over and over but never resolving so I can login… When it times out it says file exists but incorrect checksum error…

I am the only Mac user on the server who is having this problem and I cant clear it…
Have deleted the files and they just reappear again and again…

Tried many suggestions but none work…'Have completely erased all files and reinstalled 2.60d but nothing…

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Pak

Hi,

i would say there is still a file with that name on your system, somewhere. You need to find it and erase it, then reconnect. Only a guess though.

Have completely erased all files and reinstalled 2.60d but nothing

That might be the problem. Even though you think you erased all files there might still be some files related to your old installation somewhere. No clue how Mac does it, but for example in Windows files get also installed in some temp folders. That is why i hate all filesystems which install your stuff spread across the whole system :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi and thanks for your help. I will have to look deeper for any orphaned files but I’m pretty sure I got them all…

Whats so strange is how this just happened overnight on its own after years of no problems…

Oh well… will keep at it… there has to be an answer…

There is 2 possibilites I guess, either the pk3 you downloaded does not contain a binary for osx, or it failed extracting it - due to rights management.
In either case;
nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3 download that file… whatever its exact name was, open it with a Archive tool, and check if there are ui_mac and cgame_mac in it - alongside windows *.dll and the linux *.so files. Which I can tell, if you got that file I typed there, those files are inside.

If they are there its probably a right issue, extract them to your etpub folder and try joining that server again. etpub folder should be in ~/Library/Wolfenstein Enemy-Territory/etpub

Ok.Ailmanki…Thank you for your suggestion…I will try this but first can you recommend an app that will open these pk.3 files to extract the files within?

I wonder why the other Mac users on our game server are not having this issue…only me…

Just rename the file to zip, its basically a renamed zip-archive. Good luck, hope it works.

Ok I have tried several times to make this work but every time it just reverts to repeatedly downloading the following files…

nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3

nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.858441cb.pk3.

When it times out it still says 'File exists but with incorrect checksum error"…

I dont get it…

It’s because your client already has “nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3”. Server admin probably changed the content of this file (which is btw bad). Then, after he had done this, your client realizes that the file “nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3” on the server is different (has different checksum), then it redownloads the file, but this time putting a “858441cb” at the near end of the filename, resulting in “nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.858441cb.pk3”.

That is the only reason i can think of why you have such a file named “nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.858441cb.pk3” on your system, because of client/server file checksum mismatch. The “nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3” on your client is different as "“nightlybuild-etpubc-20120415.pk3” of server.

I had this problem once with a map. Some server admin changed contents of official files, then i had a file like you in my etmain folder, something like “oasis.892492492.pk3”. If i remember correct, i couldn’t play oasis anymore until i deleted that file on my system.

So, are you sure you deleted all of the files with that name in the system?

Does the server you play on has a forum? Ask the server admin if he changed a file.

Well, thanks for this advice. I have passed it on to our servin admin to see if it makes any sense to them… I am quite positive I deleted everything ET from my computer and started from scratch with a clean install…

Hopefully there will be a solution forthcoming soon… Thanks again…fingers crossed…

If you know the server admin have you maybe tried downloading it from somewhere else and then just placing it in your etpub folder manually?

(Pakrat) #11

I had our server admin email me the pk3 file and inserted it in the et pub folder… made no difference… still proceeds to attempt to keep downloading the same files… It doesnt create an new file every time… rather, it just acts like its trying to finish downloading into the same file repeatedly…
Why am I the only person out of hundreds to be having this problem? Its so damned frustrating…

(ailmanki) #12

So you tried extracting the binaries yourself?
You could also check the system log and see if it has thrown an error.
Lastly I remember something, that latest OSX modified the folder structure… not sure though - as I never used it. ~/Library still exactly same as under Leopard?

I stoped using OSX cause of reasons like that… worse then linux & windows. With each release they introduce new problems.

(Pakrat) #13

Yes. I extracted the files as you described and it ignored them choosing to continue to try and download the same file from the server… over… and over again…as it has done with every suggestion offered…This is a real headscratcher to be sure…
I can play on any other server I choose except my home one…so the game itself is working on 10.8.5.,…
Will keep trying with the hope I might get lucky and hit the winning combo…

In Mountain Lion you must access the Library (that contains the Application Support folder which holds the files in question) from the Finder by using the option key to make it appear in the dropdown list…forget if it was this way in Snow Leopard… you are correct in saying that each update brings changes…
Oh well… still hopeful we can figure this out…Thanks to everyone for your continuing support…

(ailmanki) #14

So since it works on other servers, but not on your own - did you check that the files are actually correct on the server side?

(Pakrat) #15

The server admin for our clan says the files on the server were not altered and indeed other Mac players are connecting with no trouble. Its just me…
They sent me the file to insert and try and use on my end to make it work. I am still in the process of doing this… Will report back with results… Thanks again for helping…
