Game crash upon launch of QWTA 0.3.4

Missing vc redist ?

(DukeNukeM) #22

got visual c++ redist of 2005, 2008, and 2008 sp1. missing any?

(Azuvector) #23

Even after a reinstall? Blarg.
I’ve got no clue what’s going on still. :S

(sereNADE) #24

this might be of use, found it in a prey forum

Just installed Prey myself on a Windows Vista machine yesterday, and got the same gamex86.dll error message aswell. If you look at the very last part of the error message it says ‘found DLL in pak file: C:\Program Files\Prey\base\game00.pk4/gamex86.dll’ but that it can’t copy the gamex86.dll into the directory ‘C:\Program Files\Prey\base’ (I think this may be due to Vista being very protective about programs creating files/directories themselves?)
I tried making a copy of the game00.pk4 file and renaming it to game00.rar, then extracted the gamex86.dll file from inside the archive (using winRAR) to the ‘C:\Program Files\Prey\base’ directory myself. This worked fine for me, hope it helps!

I was getting this error too, but on xp pro. I found out the game installs to c:/program files/humanhead studios/prey. When I installed the patch it defaulted to c:/program files/prey. I moved the prey folder to humanhead studios/prey and let it overwrite, that fixed it for me.

gamex86.dll errors have been an id staple since quake 2. usually they occur through out of order updating or insufficient permissions. throw mod installation in the mix and you are asking for trouble. but i am just repeating what everybody knows. maybe the prey player’s solution will be of some value to you both.

(DukeNukeM) #25

hey serenade, thanks for dropping by.

yeah i have also tried that dirty trick of manually extracting the gamex86.dll out of the game000.pk4 of qwta and putting it into the C:\Documents and Settings********\Local Settings\Application Data\id Software\Enemy Territory - QUAKE Wars\qwta\gamex86.dll.

is that what u mean?
i still get the same stupid error.

@azuvector: did u change anything significant since releasing qwta 0.3.3? i am running out of ideas here… :frowning:

(Azuvector) #26

Interesting, that almost sounds like the game’s not able to unzip from the pk4 files properly… I’ll doublecheck that I didn’t do something retarded with the pk4s like saving them in .rar format when they should be .zip(I did that with a tiny mod I did for Doom 3 years ago.), when I get home today. I might’ve done that and not noticed, although it doesn’t explain why it works for some people and not others…

And it doesn’t explain why manual unzipping doesn’t fix it, in Duke’s case…

Nope, not really, the changelog doesn’t go into details, but it’s essentially complete. I think the only major things that were included and not mentioned in the changelog were some WIP stuff for a new gametype, that doesn’t have anything to do with paths, and shouldn’t be active unless you set the si_rules cvar properly anyway. The error really looks like it’s happening before QWTA gets loaded at all.

I’ll check the format of the pk4s I released when I get home tonight, about 3-4 hours from now.

(DukeNukeM) #27

I don’t think its the format of the pk4s, cos others like Susefreak and Feanor are not having any problems. But checking is good.

Lots of things are unexplained in this case… Let me know if u need more details.

I’m planning to get a new harddisk and install windows on it, and just install all the necessary stuff for QWTA and test it on a fresh install… See if that helps anything.

(DrFunkenstein) #28

I uninstalled and reinstalled the game as well, but the problem persists. I still don’t understand why 0.3.3 worked without a hitch and 0.3.4 is causing these strange problems for some of us.

Dr. Funkenstein

(Azuvector) #29

Yeah. Checked, it all looks fine, all the pk4s are in zip format. So that won’t be it…

Erm, yeah. Hope you’re not reinstalling just because of QWTA. >.>
Otherwise though, that’s awesome, and it’d be a great way to help narrow down what might be causing problems…

Likewise. :S I’ve got no idea wtf is going on. Wish someone from SD would comment…

Yes, I am reinstalling just because of QWTA; if a fresh windows install fixes this. I am that dedicated to playing ETQW… :stuck_out_tongue:
Don’t worry, i’m not buying a new hdd for this, gonna use a spare one lying around for it.

My plan for this fresh install is simple. Install windows xp, sp2, then drivers. Dot Net framework 3.5 next, then the VC++ resdists (2005, 2008). Then its gonna be ETQW, v1.5 patch, then QWTA 0.3.4. Nothing else is gonna be on there. Anything i should add or remove for this list Azuvector?

Did u manage to get any help from the SD or id guys?

I’d suggest skipping the VC++ redistributables and .NET Framework and letting ETQW install what it needs as part of its install process… (You’re installing off dvd, right?)
If its not too much trouble, try installing to the default location, seeing if things work, and if they do, try reinstalling to your current location, so we can narrow down if it might be a path thing, although it shouldn’t be…

Haven’t heard a peep from anyone at SD…

(AnthonyDa) #32

That’s BS, look inside QW DVD and you’ll see that they are the same executables (but outdated).

(DrFunkenstein) #33

What’s the roll of VC++ in all this? I checked my installed programs and see that I have VC++ 9.0.30729 installed as the latest version. I don’t remember installing that myself.

I kinda need vc++ and .net framework for my ATI drivers dude… yes i am installing off dvd; there is another way of installing this game? i’m not aware of it…

i highly doubt that game install path has anything to do with the problem; but ok i’ll give that a shot first, no harm trying.

@drfunkenstein: i did a search for the errors that came up in the event viewer logs under the ‘system’ category, they all pointed to missing some vc++ redistributables, so to prevent ppl from asking ‘did u install vc++ redist blah blah blah’ i made sure i had them installed.
btw you have vc++ 2008 installed i believe.

(Azuvector) #35

…? BS? Read it again. Skip bothering doing extra work and let ETQW do what it’s supposed to do as part of a normal install. How’s that BS?

The VC++ redistributables are just libraries for the specific versions of VC++ that were used to compile a program. Saves a few MB here and there; a lot of more recent games are doing that rather than being completely standalone.

QWTA does not require anything extra or different from regular ETQW in that department.

The errors Duke was getting in his Windows event log suggest a problem with those, however, which is why people are talking about them at all.
They’re typically auto-installed as part of the install process for any program that needs them.
Think of them as a more technical, less functional version of DirectX. (Has nothing to do with DirectX per se, but it’s a good analogy as they’re installed for similar reasons and at similar times, if you’re still confused by them.)

I’ve got no idea which specific version ETQW needs offhand. 2005 probably, given that’s what’s used to compile ETQW mods. (Including QWTA, but AFAIK all of them, including BaseETQW were compiled with VC++ 2005.)

There’s downloadable versions of ETQW around. I think it’s on Steam and Direct2Drive or something. Don’t really know, just trying to cover all possibilities.

If you need the VC++ redistributables and .NET Framework for ATI’s drivers, they’ll probably come with the drivers, and shouldn’t need to be installed separately. Obviously, you’ve gotta have working drivers before ETQW’ll do anything useful. But whichever, I’m just saying if you don’t need to install something, don’t. :stuck_out_tongue: You know best as to what your drivers need.

That’s my thought process; if you’re going to the trouble anyway, might as well check and see, since there’s no real clue as to what’s going on so far…

(DukeNukeM) #36

Hey guys chill, no need to argue here.

@Azuvector:
I’m trying to keep stuff being installed to a minimum on the fresh install like Azuvector said, to narrow the problem down. I’m not even gonna install anti-virus or a firewall, as connecting to the internet is not necessary in this test.
.NET Framework is stated as a requirement for ATI CATALYST control panel, so i need it.

I’m cool with trying whatever u think might help; u made this mod, u know it best.
I’ll update this once I get around to doing that fresh install… Thanks again for the big help.

(DrFunkenstein) #37

Thanks for the explanation Azuvector, I was just wondering about the role of VC++ in all this.

Dr. Funkenstein

(DukeNukeM) #38

I talked to geppy about this, and he suggested un-installing and re-installing vc++ redist 2005.

I removed it, rebooted, installed vc++ 2005 sp1, rebooted and tried to launch qwta 0.3.4. Still no go, still same error pops up on launch.

I’ll try removing vc++ 2008 and try again…

(AnthonyDa) #39

There is no way that uninstalling vc redist 2008 will solve your problem since the game since it’s been released after game release. Well maybe patch 1.5 is using it, and if it does then your game won’t work at all. Also, when you’ll remove the 2008 version, all applications using it won’t work.
It sounds REALLY silly, imo the mod was badly done/compilated, especially if older builds worked fine.

This is an error Stymy is getting. However, for what it’s worth, I found out he hasn’t updated his windows vista in many many months.
