Future of Enemy Territory

ET is an amazing game and I would like to know what the future has in store for it. Is ET still supported? Are you developing map packs and bug fixes? With over 5,000 downloads PER WEEK, it would be a shame if ET fell apart because “It got old.”

Is it possible to at least “Leak” some info to the media to let us know that something is in the works? Or is it like Fort Bragg over there and they don’t let you see the sunlight? I love ET and would love to see more of it!

I doubt we’ll see anymore official patches and maps, but ET certainly isn’t getting “old” at the moment. Server-side mods such as bani and shrub are able to fix a lot of bugs, and there a a lot of mappers out there willing to keep suppyling us with maps to play on, so ET should last a while yet.

You have to face facts about games, eventually no matter how much you love a particular game they will become old no matter what, but I can definately say ill be playing ET no matter what for a very long time to come

I couldn’t agree with you more!

(Wraith2k3) #5

Yeah, but look how many people still play counter-strike. That game isn’t exactly new.

ET needs some new, quality maps to really keep it fresh…

I don’t really feel like any custom map out there is very good so far, but I’m really looking forward to Hummer’s Indiana Jones Campaign

I hate to criticize the map-makers because I can’t map to save my life as I have neither the time or desire to figure out the program :frowning:

I’d say that even with the sometimes buggy play the lack of new, decent maps is the biggest obstacle to ET’s longevity…

From the custom maps i’ve played on so far, they’ve all shown some potential but I dunno if the beta testers didn’t do their jobs well because most of the custom maps are just silly difficult for the allies…

Anyways, here’s to hoping for some good maps :drink:

Give it time - making a good map takes a long time. A lot of the maps coming out now are from the people that think being first is being best. In a few weeks other, well designed and constructed maps will make their appearances and the older maps will get dropped as it becomes more and more apparent which maps are rushed and which are made well.

On the other hand, though, I really think a few of the custom maps could be very solid with minor modifications :bored:

I figured it would take time, it’s just kind of unfortunate that SP definitely won’t have any new maps coming out and it took awhile for the mapping tools to become available…

Visa if you see bugs or things that could make a map better why don’t you post it in this forum seeing as all the mappers talk about there betas in this forum?

You spend way too much time on these forums Damo. Don’t you have something better to do? :lookaround:

(By the way, did you cancel the Operation Overload update?)

As I’ve mentioned before, ET needs Clans.

At the moment ALL the servers in my favourites list (bar one) are Clan servers running public most of the time. A lot of Clans are forming ET squads and/or their members just love the game so they’ve (possibly temporarily) switched their servers to ET. But sooner or later these Clans are going to have to make a decision as to whether they’re going to play ET competetively or not (and they might not as there are issues that need to be resolved first). Fortunately I can see Bani’s ETPro and Shrub’s ET_TourneyMod addressing most of these issues, so I’m less concerned on that score than I was when ET first came out.

Even so, if Clans don’t go for ET then they’ll be fewer servers to play on. Fewer Clan servers because they’ll be fewer ET Clans, and fewer public servers provided by GSP’s (Game Server Providers) because they won’t be earning revenue from renting ET Clan servers. In the UK, at least, the number of public servers for any particular game is largely related to the size of the Clan community for that game.

Alas no :frowning:

Kind of. RTCW is pretty much being phased out by ET so I’m more concentrating on that instead. And overload wasn’t that well received in the first place because it was too big a map fro thr RTCW size community  So instead I’m making a kick ass map for ET

That’s what I was trying to imply with my first question…

Are you measuring this in some fashion? Tracking the number of players, the number of leagues, the number of clans in leagues . . .

I have observed that ET is second only to Half-Life (i.e. Counterstrike) games in the number of players online (source: GameSpy). It was competing with BF1942 for a while but now seems to have a solid hold on second place. So I guess its safe to say the game is popular. Clans form when a game is popular. I will surmise that there are clans forming and playing ET now.

I’ve tried posting before about them but there are so many opinions flying around…

Overall I really feel like if you want to put together a well balanced map that people will enjoy, you would probably be best off with private beta testing to begin with (at least the 1st beta)…

In addition, if possible get a well established (top tier if possible) clan to try it out and give input… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the top tier clans are the ones you’re mapping it for but they will tend to have a better idea of how to get things to even out in a match…

Take a map like Rhine Bridge for example… It’s probably the most popular (at least most downloaded/played) custom map out there and it’s ridiculously slanted in the axis’ favor…

I just don’t understand how you could spend all that time making a nice looking and promising map like that and have it end up so uneven…

Therefore, take an extra week or 2 and have some experienced clans do a little private testing to get more knowledgable opinions about what works and what doesn’t in the map…

I’m pretty certain if a map-maker came to #bloodshed and asked to get some opinions about a map we’d definitely play it up and help out as much as possible… in my opinion this kind of help would be MUCH better than random posts on a forum…

Just my 2 cents of course, but I really think that would help out with the introduction of a new map.

Probably some of the best advice I have heard in awhile. And I needed to hear it too.

Thanks.

I agree with [B]Visa about the current maps. One of the things that drew me to RTCW and kept me there were the big dual objective maps like Depot, Market Garden (ty SD), and Normandy Breakout (ty Menzel). The choke points on most of the stock maps are really awful and most times I feel like there is no room to move. Give me an ET port of MG (or something along those lines) and I will be a happy man.
