Future Maps

(nephandys) #1

So I’ve been looking at that map of the Ark and fantasizing about all the maps that might come to fill up those empty spaces in the future. I was just curious about what maps people thought we might see in the future as well as locations that might have been mentioned ingame but we have yet to see (like the upcoming founders tower). I’m sure others have way better ideas than me, but here’s some of the things I have been thinking about.

Some thoughts I had were a map that included a ship and the docks where people arrive. I think there could be some really cool ideas especially if the action on the map was focused on a ship or several ships docked there. This might also include the security check point area refugees on the Ark are forced to go through before gaining entry. Maybe the resistance could be trying to escape for example.

Another idea that crossed my mind was some form of prison utilized by Security to hold resistance members. I know there is Sec Tower, kinda the Sec HQ, but it doesn’t really have a prison feel to it. You don’t see a lot of cells or anything so I think this map could be very different.

I know there is Reactor already but if you look on the map just south of Resort it looks like a ton of solar panels maybe. So I was thinking some form of power plant but perhaps with an outdoor style counter to Reactor. I can picture running and gunning through the solar panels being a lot of fun.

It would also be nice to see a more open city style map. I see that there are clearly roads and outdoor areas on the Ark so it would be nice to utilize this for at least one map. Maybe it could be a former residential area of the city. I’m not sure exactly what the objective would be in such an area, but it would be nice to have a more open outdoor style map IMO.

Separate from individual map ideas I was also thinking about how they say that the upcoming Labs are submerged. I thought maybe they might add some underwater areas maybe that you could use as short cuts similar to the vents on Aquarium or something. Not areas where there would really be fighting, maybe just a narrow passageway from point A to B, but something to add some more flavor to the game. (Personally I doubt we’ll see this, because it really would be adding a whole new element to the game: like are guns going to fire underwater like normal, is swimming addable to the game, etc.)

The Solar would definitely be interesting.

Hoping for Radar

Actually im hoping that it will be possible for the mappers to transform some of the old W:ET Maps into Brink.

would be awesome imo.

While I’m pretty sure you are referring to a map from RTCW you gave me an idea that one map could be a communications facility. I can picture a huge radar dish, could see this map being either indoors or outdoors depending on how you/they wanted to do it.

I hope for the PC’s sake that an SDK does come so you guys can make maps to your hearts content.

thank you i have been thinking the same thing since i first seen it. it would be sweet dont know if it will happen but we can only hope

Another option as far as outdoor maps go might be the plaza at the base of the founders tower depending on what the founders tower map consists of. If you look on the map the area around the base of the tower is quite big. If the new map is simply inside the tower itself the plaza could serve as a cool outdoor map and could logically lead storywise to the inside of the tower.

It would really depend on if Founder’s Tower takes up the same space on the map as Sec Tower or if it blankets that whole pelgo/offshoot that the tower is on.

This is the first thing that came to my mind. Though I think one of the load screens said something about dismantling all the ships for the raw materials. Maybe there is one last ship that the founders held on to? Or maybe a new ship arrives after years of no contact from the outside world? Maybe the resistance has secretly built a ship and security has to scuttle it?

Lots of good places for the storyline to go with that one.

Cool idea. Considering that the Ark was only meant to sustain 5K people and the population is now at 45K I can see either a makeshift prison or a horribly overcrowded prison. Either way: prison break! The resistance decides to attack the prison to free their brethren while security tries to implement a lock-down. Sweet.

The current maps are pretty spaced out…I believe only two are close to each other. Some kind of library/knowledge/community center would be cool. Like maybe there is an Archive area of the Ark that was cataloguing the history of the Ark and perhaps the outside world until communication was lost. Some kind of strange education/school would be cool, like a weird concept school. Maybe a Hospital area. Just some ideas.

Yeah, I would definitely like some more open and outdoor maps. Even though it’s a sniper’s paradise, Halo Reach’s Boardwalk map looks like it could be on the Ark. The style is very similar:

I’d also like some maps that are on the edge of the Ark and you can jump from boat to boat or jump into the water to swim across.

(nephandys) #10

I think that theoretically eventually all maps could be adjacent/touching one another or pretty damn close. Hosptial sounds like a really good idea with some great possibilities.

I forgot about the ships being dismantled…but you do have some good ideas to explain it away there. Perhaps future DLC will actually continue the current storyline so your idea about an outside boat arriving at the Ark that the 2 sides fight over sounds bad ass. This idea might actually be able to incorporate other people’s suggestions of having basically both sides on offense at the same time. Like having both sides trying to capture different things (taking over navigation, powering up the engines, locking down the bridge, etc.). Whoever gets all the key systems first wins.

A map with some of the broken down monorail trains to run through?

(tokamak) #13

Wrote a research paper on this in my first year.

Ooo, just thought of one: Fast food court in a mall. The resistance is fed up (no pun intended) with their kids starving and decides to raid the fast food court. It would involve multiple “packages” of food (one from each kiosk) which must be captured then delivered to some location.

Also, I’d like to see a map involving the giant Berlin Wall style wall bisecting the Ark. Maybe the resistance tries to blow a big hole in it?

Oh, AND how about some kind of sewer mission? Like security needs to sneak into the resistance side of the Ark for some kind of stealthy task but resistance keeps guards down there and they get alerted to security’s plans. I’m sure there has got to be something beneath the Ark. Some kind of recycling machinery. At least I hope, it would creep me out if my toilet was just a hole over the ocean.

-JJ

EDIT: Another ship scenario: New ship arrives from the outside world but it’s empty. Resistance wants to commander it to escape the Ark, security is worried there may be some sort of biological or radioactive danger that caused everyone to abandon the ship.

EDIT EDIT: @tokamak that looks like a lot of potential for the SMART system.

(nephandys) #15

Man there are some really good ideas going here. Hopefully SD already had some of these in mind or will tap these ideas for future maps.

Where’s that photo from/what was your paper on, Tok?

(wolfnemesis75) #16

Yeah…my first sentence was an unfinished thought, lol. I meant that there’s alot of room for stuff. Some maps are small on the site map but are large like Sectow while others appear larger and are small when you play them…did that make any sense? ha ha.

Hospital…I remember listening to the audio logs and there were two in particular, one from a (founder) woman’s perspective discussing helping the sick in the infirmary, the other was from a doctor who may have been flown to the Ark. That’s why I thought hospital.

The Berlin Wall idea JJ had sounds cool, as well as stealing food (Demolition Man).

A Military weapon depot would be an obvious fight for weapons.
How about some kind of Theater or Auditorium?

I also think it’d be cool to do a prequel battle showing what happened to the dudes on the plane…

(nephandys) #17

How about a nature preserve or an indoor arboretum (sp?). Like an indoor area where they tried to preserve animals and plants from pre-disaster. It could be all overgrown and poorly maintained with the animals having gone wild or feral. With a big glass dome or several interconnected such domes. This might be similar to the labs in some ways (I doubt it but we’ll see) and I could see some cool ideas here.

(wolfnemesis75) #18

I did wonder if they saved any animals or had a place for them. Your idea would be very cool. Maybe there are cages but they are empty and broken. Like the Others Camp on Lost. The Ark sometimes makes me think of Bioshock, only this time we are fighting during the Civil War on the Ark, not after the devastation. It’d be cool to stumble upon a section of the Ark that housed some Mentally Imbalanced people, like an Asylum.

Or even better, maybe some Renegade, or Mad Scientist. A truly evil area.

(Jimmy James) #19

I like the hospital and theater/auditorium suggestions. There are some really fun stadium/Colosseum-style maps in Gunz.

In the opening cutscene it looks like the monorail is completely broken down but there is a mission where the security arrives on a monorail train (complaining about using public transportation for official business). So it seems parts of the monorail are still functional. Maybe the resistance wants to fix the rest of the monorail, or sabotage the part that still functions?

I assume the broken down section of the monorail is what used to lead to what is now the resistance side of the Ark. Anyway, lots of potential there.

They should have at least some kind of Biodome thing happening if the Ark was built to be self-sustaining. Plants, insects (for pollination), maybe some birds and small rodents? It would be nice to see some wildlife other than man.

If they could somehow add a third party, hostile, NPC faction to a map - like wild roaming animals - I think that could lead to some cool gameplay (stay tuned for Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City). But, I doubt we will see it because I think that’s the sort of thing they would have had to be thinking about from the outset of developing the game. But, at least seeing them roaming around the map - birds flying, animals fleeing into the brush, animal sound effects, could be really cool and lead to some nice atmosphere. It would be cooler to see animated stuff like this in levels than paper cups, cardboard boxes, and paper blowing in the wind.
