Friendly Fire Coming back for Season Two? Should it even?

(solace_) #1

Hey DB Forum people,

So season two of ranked is approaching with the next update I believe, and I was wondering about friendly fire. I haven’t heard anything about this so I was wondering if it will be in the next season of ranked.

Personally I had some pretty mixed thoughts about it from last season considering what an AoE heavy game DB is (Nader, fragger, stoker, skyhammer…). But on the other hand, it added some unique aspects to ranked play including the need for increased communication and use of such characters.

Do I want it back for season two? Yes and no. Perhaps they could bring it back but in a more tamed form. While you would do complete damage to enemies perhaps you could only do say 50% damage to friendlies or some variation on that number. TBH its a pretty big pain when somebody accidentally steps in front of your line of fire for a fraction of a second and you accidentally one shot them so I think this would be a good compromise between not having it and having it all the way.

This would also decrease the potential for trolling I guess as I did run into that every now and again.

Anyways, thanks for reading if you did and I’d like you hear what you guys have to think.

(Perhaps someone from Splash could enlighten me as to whether this has been considered before?)

I just realized that my profile pic is proxy and I hella need to change that.

I’ve never really had a problem with FF in ranked it just makes me think about my actions more.

FF in DB is perfectly fine and should be added to every single pub server out there in existence, not removed from the one game mode it currently has it enabled.

k, sure. but WHY? Your statement doesn’t really mean anything to me if you don’t give a reason lol.

Because it balances the game alot more as it reduces mindless spam.
Everybody who played a few rounds with FF on would see this.

Although I think FF is something that all competitive games should have for ranked mode, I had some nice typical experiences here.

From team mates jumping in front of you, up to some tactical airstrikes on their own spawn.
The best thing is that lovely punishment system they´ll use after they manage to suicide by an exploding objective that you planted. Or when they decide to fight a Nader while standing on your planted mines.

The good part is that you can shoot your teammates in the feet when they don´t know how to drop ammo, or try to stack repair the EV with multiple players.

Lets hope this will be over soon when more capable players start playing ranked. :stuck_out_tongue:

@hypnotoad

So in a professional yes you could ague that it is better but does it make the game less fun to play? Outside of competitive I could definitely seeing it becoming a headache very quickly when I’m just trying to enjoy a few rounds.

Isn’t it also counter productive to balance a game by changing core mechanics in order to tone down certain mercs? I would say so. Surely the root of the problem is the mercs themselves not necessarily the ability to damage enemies while leaving friendlies unscathed.

Just a thought.

DB was always balanced around high level play, where friendly fire is on. You can’t balance an AoE merc for both modes and SD had to pick. Fortunately, In a 5v5 format the balance with FF-on is getting there.

I believe, although I may be wrong, that FF was not on in comp previous to this season. If that’s the case I don’t see how they were balancing the game with only one gamemode in mind.

I realize DB was always meant to be balanced with high level play in mind, so I guess my question is, should certain mercs be balanced with respect to their abilities in comp when friendly fire is on? not just in terms of quick play matches.

I would think that having a more unified platform is better for the Dirty Bomb community and also provides clarity for new players about how the game’s different circles of play function.

The game plays better with friendly fire on, in my opinion, at least with competent players. That’s mostly why I’m happy for it to be off in pub games where people just have no clue.

I just prefer it on. Less non stop explosive spam & more caution when pushing from friendly airstrikes and all that.

I do get sick of friendly collisions though, just because they took away our Australian ranked servers and force us to play on the Asian ones with high ping, and high ping + collisions is honestly the most cancer thing I’ve played yet.

haha yeah friendly collisions is one thing we could do without for sure.

FF is fine in ranked where chances are good that you are playing with your mates and communicating over TS or Discord offers a quick and easy way to coordinate.

But for the love of RNGsus don’t add this in pub where text chat is too cumbersome to use while alive and the only people using ingame voice are grumpy veterans trying to lecture noobs on using their abilities (raises hand) and 12 year olds.

(doxjq) #14

It’s just so inconsistent, always launching you backwards or warping you forwards etc. Sometimes for whatever reason on high ping you can run into a team mate and end up on their head and while it’s doing that your player spins inconsistently in one direction. It’s super annoying.

(LifeupOmega) #15

Can only agree with this, would reduce the spam shitfest that is public - even if SD don’t make them all ff on there should still be the option to have servers with it on.

(n-x) #16

I like FF on myself. The problem with it being on, on casual servers that the amounts of douche bags killing team mates would make most games unplayable.

(Eox) #17

I’m fine with the existance of FF servers, but not about turning every single of them into FF. What about people who dislike FF ? What about trolls ?

Pubs should remain without FF for most of them. Some servers can be turned into FF servers, but at least half of them should remain non-FF. Both people who like and dislike FF would be happy : best of both worlds.

People who think FF is bad for a game like dirty bomb are just shitters who need to git gud.
For the trolls, they’re not a problem, you can kick them or implement auto-kick after a certain threshold. Other games already solved this “problem”.

while i have no objection to FF-off servers to those that want them, almost 2 DECADES of online FPS history prove that you can have FF-on, even in hectic, high speed, spammy FPS

(yesser) #20

FF need cordination and cordination in a fast game like DB is really hard especially if you dont know your teammate
i personnaly hate FF even in ‘‘calm’’ games like CS
it could be cool if the ff was disabled in lower ranks and get a bigger % the bigger the rank
example : bronze 5 no FF - bronze 1 20% dammage - silver 5 25% -silver 1 50 %
i’am bad with balancing numbers so these would certenly need change
