FPS problems...

(Random-Hero) #1

Hi,

Well heres some info on my laptop:
Its an Acer Aspire 1350 series
Mobile AMD Athlon xp 3000+ (2.2 Ghz)
512 MB of Ram
Mobile Ati 9200, 64mb memory with newest Omega driver (www.omegadrivers.net)
Anyways, i used to play Q3 a while ago and i could set everything on high and get like around 80 fps or so. I decided to reiinstall windows few days ago because it was killing me. I’ve just played ET and ETF and i was surprised how LOW my fps was…
Would it help if i get SP2? because at this time i only updated to SP1. (before i removed windows i got SP2 tho)

ET is goint to get much lower FPS than q3. I wouldn’t expect a 9200 to give you good performance, the one machine I used with one got ~20 outdoors on fueldump, with very low quality config.

I doubt SP2 will help your FPS.

There may be chipset drivers for your laptop which would improve performance.

Nice one Bravo. Thats why I do all my tech work myself.

Random-Hero: Right click on my computer, go to hardware manager and see if there are any items with exclimation paints or question marks. If so, then they need drivers.

  1. Start et.
  2. Join a server you often play on.
  3. Go spec
  4. Open console with button left to 1 button. The “§” button on european keyboard anyway.
    Write: (or copy and paste)
    /seta r_picmip 3
    /seta cg_wolfparticles 0
    /seta cg_atmosphericEffects 0
    /vid_restart

Now hopefully about at most 20 more FPS.
Good luck!

Ive got more FPS on my GeForce 2 MX400 2 years ago… (in a athlon 1800) and also thatcard nears the20 fps in a PII 350 MHz running XP… Maybe crap OpenGL support by ATI?

(SCDS_reyalP) #7

Very unlikely. ET runs fine with 512, especially if you aren’t using the highest quality textures (you certainly shouldn’t be maxing out the quality with a 9200!).

edit: Maybe you meant video RAM, but again, at low quality settings 64 megs is plenty for ET.

That’s only true if you actually run out of physical RAM and the OS starts using the swap file, otherwise it has no effect on FPS.

(More RAM would probably reduce load time for him though.)

Clearly, Bravo doesn’t understand who he’s contradicting. I love it when this happens.

hmm, k cool. I’ll try the console commands in a min when i get home. Btw, also when i use the SET RECOMMENDED button it sets everything on high…very odd.
I had this problem once with a HL1 mod Day of Defeat, where i only got like…around 20 fps no matter wich resolution nor graphical settings 0_o. I forgot how i fixed that tho, now i have the smae prob with ET i guess. (like…my old AMD 180,1.6ghz with 256 ram and geforce 2 runs it better…rofl)

Please don’t flame people on our forums. Your own personal experience is a little off the wall - going from 6 FPS to 76 FPS just by upgrading your ram is clearly not a common situation, and I would not recommend offering advice based on it.

(Sauron|EFG) #14

Including some more facts (like how much RAM he upgraded from/to) would actually have made it a useful example.

omg, ok. i finally found out what the prob was. Well, it appears that the newest omegadriver is crap. (i used older ones before and everything was fine tho, dunno what happend to the new one). So i just installed some Official 2 years out of date ati driver wich i found on the acer.com site. Now i get Mostly around 80fps with everything on high except for triliner, its set on biliner.
Well thanks for the support anyways guys :D. guess i learned my lesson…why upgrade to some new driver while the old 1 is just fine.
