FoV - Some thoughts + a couple of Qs (PC).

(RGS) #1

Hi guys, got the game last week and after a fair few late nights now @ Level 20 :). Only played bots on hard so far whilst I lean the ropes (+ to be honest I quite like these types of games offline anyway, used to really enjoy Q3A on nightmare).

Anyway… was just wondering what FoV most people here are using (ui_fov). I usually go for 90 given the option as really dislike the tunnel/zoom effect of low FoVs - they just seem really unnatural to me. Would rather have a bit of fisheye than feel like I’m permanently looking through a scope.

I’m currently using 85 however as when I go to 90 the weapon and arms become a little too distorted for my liking (Euston is my weapon of choice). Also some weapon/ammo/jacket combos can display clipping with the arm and the gun (though generally it seems to be very minor) or display a bit of a broken wrist effect. Examples being drum mags + SMGs clipping and Lobster with the wrist (though I use neither of these currently).

I’d say 90 FoV for the environment and if we had the choice 80 for the weapon seems like a good combo but the two seem to be linked in Brink (hence my 85) unless any one knows differently?

If I was going purely for a competitive edge 100+ or so is prob an advantage, but 90 just feels best in terms of making me ‘feel there’ without any real distortion or zoom.

Will prob keep switching around in the 80-90 range for a bit until deciding on what I find best (playing on an 30 inch, 16:10 @ 2560x1600).

Anyway… Sorry for rambling on, be interested to know what are you guys using and why?

(also got to say, I really like the art style and it’s implementation + interface is nice, clean and tidy too :))

I usually go with 90 plus-or-minus 10 depending on the game. The low 60-75 fov is suited for when you’re sitting several feet from the screen (ie. console); but when the screen is right in front of your face the lack of peripheral vision makes you feel like you have blinders on, and at that distance you don’t need “fov zoom”.

I use 85 in Brink as well, probably for the same clipping/distortion reasons you listed.

(Kendle) #3

110 - always used 110, ever since RTCW in 2001, can’t change now, anything else just looks and feels wrong (couldn’t get into COD:BO precisely because 90 was max.)

(RGS) #4

Thanks for your replies guys.

I think CoD’s max FoV is actually 80, or at least it was for World at War. I can just about handle 80, below that… not good.

(Litego) #5

I think I have around 140 or something.

(Kendle) #6

@RGS, COD:BO max. FOV is 90

@Litego, Brink max. FOV is 110

(RGS) #7

Tks for the info Kendle, whilst I don’t intend to play CoD:BO myself, it’s good to see they’ve added an extra 10 degrees anyway. Not to mention that I believe it’s a slider in the menu now rather than console command only. Not that either helps you much I guess…

Options are always good, especially when FoV is involved.

(Verticae) #8

Always 110.

(Smoochy) #9

100 for me.

i guess it depends on personal taste and aspect ratio. i have a 16:10 and 100 feels right to me.

(Stormchild) #10

85 to 95, but usually 100 or more breaks a bit my immersion because of the distortion. So for Brink, I stick with 90 and it’s very nice. I guess it depends definitely on the screen and screen distance.

(Spendlove) #11

What is the default FOV setting?

(RGS) #12

Default is 70.

(the range you can choose from goes from 70-110)

(gooey79) #13

Prefer mine at 110, too.

(Litego) #14

Well I have the default spread across 3 monitors, so for you guys its around 140 if you were to compress it into 1 monitor.

(Verticae) #15

Why would you use the default and not max out ui_fov on three monitors? Distortion fetish? :expressionless:

(Bittermetal) #16

I rock 95-105 depending… Love the sense of speed it gives too! Great for light body types.

(Litego) #17

It automatically adjust the FoV, since I didnt have to adjust it in this game Im gonna assume its roughly 140 as thats what I found decent in other games. I have the same FoV as default FoV on the middle screen, as you guys see it, then I have extra Peripheral vision on the side monitors. Its not all stretched out or zoomed in like ****, I would never play it like that.

Edit: Heres a picture…

Top one is 70 FoV, second in 110 FoV, third is ADS default FoV. As you see theres no need for me to go to 110, Ill only loose aim and gain almost nothing. I guess FoV is Vert+, thats why its not stretched or zoomed on the default FoV.

UI is kinda messed up, if someone knows how to fix it I’d appreciate it.
@RGS, COD:BO max. FOV is 90

@Litego, Brink max. FOV is 110
“Domain is anywhere from 65 to 80” from the BO console. I’d love it to be 90.

@OP I prefer 95 mainly because of the amount of ADS zoom and how the guns/arms look at any higher setting. In BFBC2 I like around 105 - 110 because the gun view model FOV does not scale with normal FOV, which is a very good way of doing things imo, especially zoom amount when ADS, it’s not one extreme to the other. Of course ideally we would be able to change the gun, ADS zoom, and normal FOV settings individually like the L4D2 source mod (which got banned because it was “cheating” ) or Bullet Storm (I think). Oh wouldn’t that be sweet people

(Spendlove) #19

Litego, that is stunning!

What kit are you using? Costs?

(Litego) #20

2 x nVIDIA GTX 460 in SLi on 3 23" Monitors. I run 3600x720 (+Bezel correction which means its a little bit wider, around 3700) resolution there at around 80-100 FPS, I might be able to run it at 5760x1080, but I havent tried it yet because I havent had time. But for me frame rate is very important, so if I get below 50 I wont use that.

Its not that expensive, paid around 550 Euro for the screens (which I only bought like 2 weeks ago) and 300 Euros for the cards, but that was over a year ago, so you should be able to get them (or equivalent cards) for much cheaper today. You can also get much cheaper screens, but I needed them to be HD, and I needed them to be able to set up in portrait mode. If you dont need that then you can get cheaper monitors. Okey, so maybe its a little bit expensive, and TBH I dont know if its really worth it as theres so many games that just dont support it yet. And many games (such as BRINK) require you to manually tweak some .ini files and such which can be a pain, but there are guides for almost every game around on how to do it on forums specializing in this. But for the games that do support it, its an amazing experience!
