FOV on the PC

(master[mind]) #81

I use a high DPI mouse with a high sensitivity, so it’s both fast and easy to aim.
I say again; yes it does.

A huge effect.
Unless the game is coded to adjust mouse sensitivity based on the FOV setting, no, it doesn’t.

Sorry. But you’re very, very wrong.

Mouse sensitivity = how fast your character turns.
FOV = how wide your field of view is (What does FOV stand for again… OH YEAH! Funny that…)
NOT RELATED TO ONE ANOTHER.

FOV setting will make the sensitivity SEEM different, because your field of view will be different. Going from FOV 90 to FOV 120 means you can see a wider area, so turning 90 degrees will make a less visible difference on FOV 120, meaning it looks as if you’ve turned a shorter distance to get to the new angle, which in turn makes your rotation speed seem faster, even though it’s not.

I’m expecting the PC version to allow FOV to be changed, because I think missing something that’s been so important to PC games would be a huge fail from a formerly PC-focused developer. I’m HOPING, but not expecting, that they give us console gamers (yes, I’m on PS3, I USED to be a PC gamer, now I’m on a tight budget and can’t afford regular upgrades) the option of changing FOV as well, even if it is in a more limited manner.

By the way, in Quake and Quake 2, I routinely used FOV 120, and was more comfortable with that setting than 90 - I found headshots EASIER than FOV 90, which was the default.

Look i’m not trying to start an argument here.

Just try it. Go in ET, set FOV to 75, look around a bit, then crank it up to 110.

You will notice ia huge difference in how much you have to turn for a 360.

Edit- maybe you’re using a very high sense, so that you don’t notice the difference. try it with a low sens and you will.

LOL, I just did this for ****s and giggles, even though I knew the outcome.

ET, Axis 1st spawn on Supply Depot, looking at the flag and doing a 360 so I’m looking at the flag again, using a G3 Laser Mouse @ 500 DPI and sensitivity = 1.0 (my normal in-game sens)

FOV 75 = 12 cm movement across the mouse pad.

FOV 120 = 12 cm movement across the mouse pad.

I’m convinced

(LyndonL) #85

That pretty much screams “Owned”.

(trollface) #86

I knew that all along, it was all a plot to make Kendle waste some time.

(Bullveyr) #87

Thx Kendle, you saved me the time for doing a test where I know the outcome.

+Rep for that

PS: 12cm seems a little bit low for a 360 with 500 CPI and sensitivity = 1

Thanks for testing and proving it Kendle…

But did you even READ my post?

If you pay attention to what FOV and what mouse sensitivity ARE, then you’d KNOW that, AS I SAID ALREADY… NO, the FOV does NOT affect turning speed. If it had resulted that FOV in ETQW did, that wouldn’t be because FOV affected it, it would be because the game was coded to adjust sensitivity in conjunction with FOV. Apparently it doesn’t, which means the only change is the PERCEIVED speed, which is an optical illusion based on the difference in your field of view.

Which is exactly what I was saying in the first place.

(trollface) #89
That pretty much screams “Owned”.
Yea i admit it does.

I was convinced actually. We even had a formula for calculating the various settings in different fovs back when i played ET.

Edit- think found it. Not that it makes much sense to me.

Zoom_sensitivity = sensitivity * tan((zoomfov/2) * (PI/180)) / tan((fov/2) *(PI/180))

Edit 2 - No oblivion i didn’t, i was so convinced i was right, lol. I guess the illusion is indeed powerful.
You’re the man dude (or girl), thanks for clearing this up, and thanks to test subject Kendle.

(Kendle) #90

Yeah, I think my Windows sensitivity is out, I used to have a glass mouse mat, which didn’t play well with my mouse in normal Windows apps, but now I have a cloth map it’s maybe time to rethink my settings …

Yes I did, and I knew you were right, but I just wanted to throw some numbers in to stop the “I’m right”, " no, I’m right" merri-go-round.

(brbrbr) #91

more critical was polling rate, correct acceleration processing and stable work on different types of surfaces.
sadly UV sensors/IC’s slowly adopted in mouse as well as newer math in them.

but yes, played mainly in DPI 3600 mode.
tried DPI 5k mode on Logitech stuff and consider it unplayable yet, dunno why[improper pad/imperfect implementation of HW itself or lack of training?].

(obliviondoll) #92

The quote you were replying to was directed at trollface (as quoted), not you - sorry for not making that very clear. He replied after my post with something that he’d only say if he blatantly ignored what I said, or didn’t understand.

(DubPlate) #93

Why won’t they shed any light on this? Even just to say it won’t be as horribly low on PC as it is in all the videos I’ve watched.

(ed lolington) #94

in the german thing they said that it’s adjustable on the pc

(DubPlate) #95

German thing? I’m glad this game is coming out on the 13th for me so I can finally get clarification on this (imo) game breaking issue before I commit to this game. I was hoping for this type of video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DNGWzutU9E Go dice

(indirect) #96

You’re an idiot.

(GreasedScotsman) #97

CONFIRMED: FOV can be changed, and is capped at 110 on the PC.

(ClickClickBOOM) #98

Source? Awesome news!

(trollface) #99

Thats great news indeed.

(DarkangelUK) #100

Did anyone really expect it to be locked on PC? Damn you faithless heathens!
