FOV on the PC

(ed lolington) #21

most of PC players don’t know what it is and therefore won’t set it/will set it wrong. this is plenty of reason to not put it in the game or to restrict it with an upper limit. setting it wrong can negatively impact performance depending on your system specs.

(riptide) #22

Most PC gamers no… but their core audience… you know competitive gamers… all are accustomed to FoV… It will be an option… care to wager otherwise all Splash Damage employees are not allowed to accept this wager!

(Nail) #23

most of the PC players around here have been doing it for 10 years, both SD games have it locked I believe to 90 - 120, we also know how to turn off unnecessary detail to improve framerate

(BioSnark) #24

Care to back up that claim? I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.

(ed lolington) #25

for every wet and etqw there’s a tf2 or a cod. in fact i’d be willing to guess that there’s more recent games where the maximum fov is 90 than there are games where it goes above 90. that’s why i said “most of PC players” in my first post.

If Brink were being made to cater specifically to a core audience then it wouldn’t be on PS3/360. The thing about people who follow splash damage games loyally is that you don’t really have to work very hard to sell them the game and for Brink they make up a small fraction of the total audience.

ed:

sure. there are more recent games where setting your FOV isn’t possible than there are where it is. just because you’re play one of the few games that does makes you believe that it’s some sort of common knowledge. just go ask someone who hasn’t played wet/etqw to explain field of view to you and watch them stammer.

(Daystar) #26

I just realised I don’t know what my actual fov is in TF2. I bloody well should, it’s my main competitive game and I’ve been playing it for going on 3 years. This is embarrassing…

Quake live has it in the GUI and I’d say 2010 is pretty recent  it’s also an option in the gui in tf2.

Also I never said specifically catered to their core audience… but they won’t likely forget them either(and they definitely didn’t this time around)… anyway enough talk… let’s wager if you’re so sure.

(ed lolington) #28

in tf2 it doesn’t go above 90 and most players don’t change it (you can tell when you spectate through them).

here’s my wager:
i bet that nobody will care about FOV after launch (except the people on these forums). if im wrong I won’t ever post on the SD forums again.

Quick, someone get a worldwide PSA on the go!

(A.i) #30

You should have seen people’s reaction to fov when crysis 2 demo came out
pc gamers don’t really care only when its already at acceptable value such as 90

(BioSnark) #31

@ed: What you’re saying is that some people… let me just quote it

most of PC players don’t know what it is and therefore won’t set it/will set it wrong. this is plenty of reason to not put it in the game or to restrict it with an upper limit. setting it wrong can negatively impact performance depending on your system specs.

There are plenty of good reasons to limit FoV to a standardized and reasonable range… for the platform, of course. Removing it because “setting it wrong can negatively impact performance depending on your system specs” is also an excellent reason to remove resolution options (but what if they don’t have wide screen?! onoez). Cut them graphics options nao before someone tries to max them without the right rig. Better quick remove that 5.1 audio because lots of people don’t have it.

What I’m saying is that people are not, in fact, retarded and don’t randomize their settings just because they can. If you’re making a game and are worried about your settings options being intimidating, you put a button called “advanced settings” in the menu for your advanced settings because your player base knows what the word, “advanced” means.

(ed lolington) #32

there are tons of resolutions that games don’t support (see: odd numbers).

(A.i) #33

you didn’t get his point…

(ed lolington) #34

i guess he and I are in the same boat then

(BioSnark) #35

The reasoning you used to get to your point is bull*. That’s my point.

(ed lolington) #36

i respectfully disagree

(BioSnark) #37

Good. I wasn’t trying to get you more infractions or anything, just disputing your reasoning.

90 works for me if there’s no other option, I kinda like 100, but 60 is just unacceptable on PC

I’m glad this thread is still at the top. People will care about FOV after launch if it is below 90. What does everyone think it’s at in this video? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odefa3EgTpM&feature=player_embedded

I think somewhere between 70 and 80 which is not very good at all imo.
increasing your fov to get more acceleration is the equivalent to busting out the windscreen in your car to get more acceleration. it’s not going to make you accelerate more quickly but it will sure as hell feel like it does.

for some people the feeling is everything. the rest of us use condoms.

it’ll probably be one of those settings that users won’t be able to touch in Brink, because let’s face it: most people won’t know how to set it properly. Having a view frustum the size of a barn door isn’t always the greatest thing in the world when it comes to performance and there definitely is a limit to “how big” your field of view really should be.
Wow, single minded are we? I think you missed the portion about increased view range. That happens to be kinda important to me. The increased speed feel is just a bonus. :stuck_out_tongue:
