Flat Panel Monitor Weirdness

(schmeisser) #1

I just got a Dell 19" flat panel monitor. I tried running ET at 1024 x 768, looked weird. Any moving object has a “tracer” effect, dragging a brief blurry “ghost” along with it. Never had this effect with my old tube monitor at same resolution. I also noticed text looks less sharp than I’m used to. I tried messing with a few settings, didn’t tseem to help. WTF? Is this just typical performance for flat screen monitors, or is there a “sharpness” setting I haven’t found yet?

CRT>Flat Panel (unless you get one of those 3000 dollar ones). So yes thats normal for flat panels. Is there something to fix it? Returning it and buying a CRT monitor will do the trick.

I’ve used a small TFT for some years now with no problems - and newer ones should have lower response times (high response times can cause the ghosting effect you describe). What is the native resolution of the screen? I would suggest either trying to run ET at that resolution (with details turned right down if necessary) or at an exact multiple resolution i.e. if the screen is 1600x1200 native then run at 800x600

I’ve played ET on my friends 17" TFT and no problems like you were saying yet as someone said above ya cant beat a CRT =P they may take more room but oh well

My mother got a new Dell computer with a 17" CRT wich looks kinda… dated / crap :o.

So their TFTs might be silly quality too :???: :???: .

I’ve got a 19" dell TFT - make sure you run it at 1280 x 1024, or it will not a produce a sharp image. All TFTs have one resolution which they are intended to be run at - changing down to 1024x768 for example will reduce picture quality.

I would say that it’s not as good for games as a decent CRT (although close) , but a lot better on the desktop.

My flat pannel is like that, but it seems better now i downloaded direct x 9.0b. (It may not be that though.)

I have a Samsung 17" tft… its fine for everything

(Wikkit) #9

Compaq 7020. No problem at all.

I have an IBM L170. Works fine.

If using a TFT for gaming, make sure that it have an update refresh of max. 25 ms.

20 is prefered.

Dito but 19", and using higher a res like 1600xwhatever it then does produce a very slight blurring effect. I never run anything more than 1280x1024 so what the hell.

Problems arrived when I first got the box and the drivers were standard factory bullshit and it was dodgy on games for some reason, just updated em and it was fine.

So going by the posts in this thread, CRT are better, some TFT monitors have some problems but not all? And that the latest directx can help?

I’m wondering because i was planning to get a 19" LG TFT soon, was mainly for graphics programs but then I got into ET. I’m just making sure that it’ll still be okay for gaming.

hmm

Just make sure to get one with a low (<25ms) response time.

I bought a Hitachi CML175SXWB (16ms) after reading
this review:

I love it.

Most the LCDs I’ve seen from Dell are >40ms.

the lower the ms the better yeah?

(BoomStick) #15

I thought higher ms was better. maybe not with lcd flat panel? dunno much about monitors. I did just put some money down on THIS Ever since i put the money down i keep hearing mixed thoughts about lcd and gaming. can someone tell me if this is a good monitor?

(Salteh) #16

Lower is better…
it’ll refresh/redraw(?) the screen more often

(bluechibi) #17

wow that monitor looks amazing, 21"s? that must have cost a lot
