First paragraph of the IGN Brink preview...

(amazinglarry) #1

It’s been a long road for developer Splash Damage to get to Brink. Spawned from the PC mod community, Splash Damage grabbed everyone’s attention with the Enemy Territory multiplayer expansion to the 2001 Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

sigh - Pretty sure Enemy Territory in general was intended to be a new, standalone game, with SD doing the multiplayer portion. Definitely not an expansion to RtCW. A sequel maybe… am I wrong here?

Anyway, with that kind of accuracy in writing in the first paragraph I’m a little worried about reading the full article.

W:ET was originally supposed to be an expansion to RTCW, but became a free, standalone download.

I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be a standalone game, where the single player portion had squads etc… and when the project was canned, the multiplayer portion was mostly finished so it was released for free.

(Mustkunstn1k) #4

Expansions can be standalone.
Anyway, still, isn’t something really to be picking about… Who cares.

(amazinglarry) #5

I care about accuracy, obviously - which is why I posted. Does that answer your question?

But I just wanted to be sure, and found out I was wrong. That was kind of the idea.

Afair first it was planed as an expansion pack for RtCW, then stand alone with more focus on SP and finally what we got.
This story is also backed up by wikipedia.

(DarkangelUK) #7

It was an expansion pack with both SP and MP, the SP didn’t quite cut it so MP was released as free standalone.

Word yeah, edited original post earlier (or at least, put a “reason for editing”)

Maybe next time you’ll do your research before looking silly :stuck_out_tongue:

I have heard many reliable rumors that W:ET originally had a single player mode as well, but that part was scrapped because it was borked and incomplete (another developer was doing the single player). It was released incomplete, bugs and all, because it was so novel and fun to play. Fortunately, its popularity led to patches and lots of 3rd party content. SD is still reaping the benefit of W:ET, as I view Brink as ET3, if only in spirit…I also have heard rumor of other unfinished maps, as well…I sometimes wonder what kind of goodies are hidden away in the dusty vaults of SD…

This article has all the info you need.

Looking at Brink it seems SD never forgot what they originally planed for W:ET.

"The last map, Nero Order brings the conflict to an Axis airbase. Scattered in the canyons surrounding the airbase are anti-aircraft guns, which the Allies will have to find and destroy. For each set of guns they destroy, the Allied air assault will be seen flying overhead destroying blockades to let the Allied troops advance further in order to destroy more anti-aircraft guns. The final guns are located inside the airbase. After they’re gone, the Allied attack will finally be able to carpet bomb the airfield and the game will be finished. "

Wow, this must have been the map they spent all that trouble making the relevant scripting for when using script movers, I remember reading some of the functions there were specifically created for aircraft.

I WANT 2!

PS. My entry for the TLR competition isn’t far off from this concept.

(DarkangelUK) #14

There was a user made map that sounds just like that released for RtCW. In fact VERY similar to that… you had to destroy that AA guns, and once completed, planes flew in and destroyed the runway.

(Herandar) #15

All had fun, especially me, seeing as I was kicking everyone’s sorry ass up and down the maps. Losers.

Ah, yes, the insecure game journo that’s got to brag about his 1337 skillz in playing a preview… He’s been gone from the website for nearly five years, but his douchery is maintained forever in their archives.

(CVIChEK) #16

I’ve never heard of ET having a singleplayer, as far as I know, it was supposed to come with RtCW, but for some reasons it got delayed and was to be made as an expansion pack. Ultimately, they decided to ship it as a stand alone game.

(DarkangelUK) #17

I was there man… I was there. Bots, scattered dead, everywhere… failed AI walking into walls… doors not opening. It was horrible, HORRIBLE!

But yes, there was SP at one point.

If you think that is fun, you should have seen the map based on a moving train

That’s just pure evil bob.

Brings back fond memories of the UT2k4 AS-Convoy (also the one on the demo). That was spectacular.

Indeed. At the very least they should let us have the newsreel footage.
