First impression of Phantom?

(Malkovich) #1

I’m just wondering what people think of him now that he’s finally here. Both from Phantom players AND people who played against Phantoms. I personally think he is real fun to play, Katana seems really powerful. I can take down a Skyhammer with a heavy attack followed by a light attack (with Chopper). The Cloak is ok, the outline and alpha on enemy Phantoms is quite visible even when they are walking and as expected can tank a Proxy mine easy. I still think I need to test him out a bit to see what kinda tweaks I feel he needs (if any)

So, what do people think?

PS: For those interested in my first game of him: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/437196758520558879/FBCD5C7D2321E4DF0255635A6A213B37BEB786E7/

cricket bat can also do this

(cornJester) #3

Katana WITH the chopper perk seems to do about 109 damage on the strong attack. Or just enough so that breathing on a nader or bushwacker after hitting them is enough to kill. Any merc under that in HP is a one hit kill.

(scorchingPainting) #4

People screamed OPOPOPOPOP when his Role Call was released, but he really doesnt feel that strong to me, I think the cloak is a little too obvious.

Some players are dominating with him, some are sucking. Hard to know what to think just yet TBH!

(Malkovich) #5

cricket bat can also do this[/quote]

Oh? I didn’t realise since I rarely use cricket bat. I don’t find myself melee’ing alot previously, but I suppose with this merc now I’m able to go for more melee kills

(Jojack) #6

Having just joined my first match to see 4 Phantom’s on the enemy team in a 7v7, my first impression is that he is the new most annoying merc to have stacked on one team.

He certainly adds a need to develop more awareness to blurry things where you think no enemies are or should be. He tanked a direct nade blast while cloaked that normally would instagib anyone except Rhino. Not OP, just really annoying. Probably a lot of fun to play, but he kind of changes the battlefield into something other than what it was, and what I expect out of a game like this. I think overall, this type of merc is fun to play, but detracts from the overall enjoyment of the game. I fear Red Eye will be the same type of merc.

Think I’ll probably take a few weeks off when he goes into free rotation.

(Indefinite) #7

Would honestly just rather have him not be in the game.

No, haven’t had many problems with dealing with players using him, at all actually, just mechanically detracts from the experience instead of adding to it, imo.

His Armor can tank too much in my Opinion. Caught an Phantom changing and gave him 4 headshots and some normal hits with the hochfir, before he stabbed and killed me, he still had 89% health left.

(_Sniff_) #9

My only complaint is that I don’t have enough people to stab.

(Keldrath) #10

He’s broken OP and bad for the game. He really doesn’t fit in.

(Jojack) #11

I don’t think he’s broken or OP, I just think he changes the game into something I really wasn’t looking for in a shooter. I agree he doesn’t fit in with the overall feel of the game.

Sadly, this is the first time I’m thinking of not playing. Again, not because he’s OP, but because he fundamentally changes the way the game is played into something I’m not too interested in.

Maybe things will cool down and we will stop seeing a minimum of half the teams as Phantom. I’m sure it will cool down to a degree, but there seems to be a lot of people that enjoy using cloak and melee in a shooter. I think he will always be a problem until (if) private servers get released and owners can ban whatever mercs they feel like.

(Soulfighter) #12

Yeah that’s actually very frustrating and if you have the chopper perk you’re better off doing 2 regular slashes, which will also kill a nader but much faster.

(Gi.Am) #13

My impressions after a few matches:

  • He is fun to play. Even more fun than Sparks.
  • his katana is badass I know people feared that he won’t be melee enough but there is just something primal about chopping up people up close.
  • It is also quite strong sneaking up on repairing proxys and sparks in the back and onehitting them is very satisfying
  • going by the hitbeeps the katana seems to hit multiply targets jumping in a whole group is awesome shure you die eventually but thats 2-5 seconds pure panic and noone is keeping an eye on the objective ^^
  • The Cloak is great for going around and getting behind, also great for corner camping right beside a secondary objective.
  • the cloak is good to give you the initiative even if they see you coming, it gives you time to lineup the headshot while the armor eats the incoming initial spray.
  • The cloak is not so good as an escape tool when shit hits the fan, activition has a small delay and usually you die before you can profit from the armor.
  • The cloak doesn’t take that many shots either before it breaks which is good since if you spot a enemy phantom a couple of bullets will make him visible for your teammates, so spray away to help the team.
  • Everything will disable the cloak not only gunfire, so no stealth repairs/plants or help ups

Overall I like him I’m as always not good with him but he is fun to play and he definitively changes the game. Distracting the enemy, taking out high value targets and overall breaking defensive positions the other Mercs can’t reach.
Is he OP ? I don’t think so he hinges quite a bit on wether people keep their eyes open and communicate or not. So might actually be the case that he becomes slightly UP as soon as people have learned to counter him.

Special point I’m so far against any kind of spawnprotection. Not sure if I will hold that stance with phantom now in. Since he can fairly easy slip through and delay or damage a wave all on his own. But before we jump to conclusions on that point I say wait and see how he fairs after his free rotation.

(LifeupOmega) #14

Using the C94 I two-shot Fraggers, I one shot lights. I’m having a field day but god the Kek feels unnecessary when I already have amazing CQC damage.

I’m now eagerly waiting for the Dodge/Parry system to come in when fighting other Phantoms, we can call it Dirty Souls.

His Cloak gives him more HP than a Rhino, he’s got arguably the best gun in the game, certainly the best SMG in the game. Has an enormous peak advantage, because even if you do manage to see him as he peaks you, his cloak will absorb your damage. He’s got relatively high HP without cloak and a high move speed to go with it. His katana is not in any way difficult to use. Turrets ignore him, He can eat pretty much anything, even prox mines with the Cloak. The addition of the cloak adds another thing to the game you have to give your attention to, and it’s already got enough things without it that you have to be attentive about.

And he can return objectives while invisible.

I don’t see how that can not be broken or OP.

Judging by these comments, I pray for normal matches when the next rotation occurs. Phantoms phantoms everywhere.

Just to shut down any person who decides to whine about the katana and say it is OP:

Katana is slower than all other melee weapons.

Every single melee weapon requires 2+ hits to kill 110+ HP mercs even with chopper.

Combat knife and cricket bat deal 80 damage on a heavy swing. 96 with chopper.

Stiletto dealt 90 damage previously (exact same amount as the katana does now) but was nerfed to 85 this patch. 108 with chopper previously now around 102.

The katana deals 90 on a heavy swing which is 108 with chopper and 60 on a fast swing or 72 with chopper. It can not 1 shot any more mercs than any of the other weapons.

The only benefit it has over other melee weapons now in TTK or STK is that it can 1 hit 90 HP mercs without having to use chopper. So if you feel being able to 1 hit 90 HP mercs without using chopper is OP, I would like to know why you didn’t whine about the pre patch stiletto since that could 1 hit 90 HP mercs for many months too.

Since the katana is slower than all the other melee weapons it is actually worse (on paper and in most practical purposes) vs any class with 110 or more HP. Why? Because you take that extra little bit of time to get in the 2nd swing to kill the enemy and that extra time can make all the difference.

Finally someone gets it. I’m so tired of reading that it’s so OP and so good when it’s so obviously not.

The one and only redeeming quality of the katana is that it can hit multiple people at once

Yeah the Katana might not be OP but like i wrote previously, i think his suit is kinda OP. If you get 4 Headshots and multiple Bodyshots on any merc with the Hochfir he is killed except maybe Rhino, but i can life with that, because i see Rhino more like a MG Station, because he is so slow.
But wiht someone who is this fast and can tank with his Armor even 2 Direct hits from Nader. I think that is kinda OP and that he is so hard to spot in an fast paced Game like this, because you are constantly moving, at least as an attacker this makes him more like a gift to the defenders on nearly all maps.

(watsyurdeal) #20

I know he’s visible while sprinting, but how visible is he while walking, crouch walking, and standing still?
