FileFront is closing - get your files backed up!

(Pande) #1

Word is, the entire FileFront network is closing down. W:ET is lucky to have so many sites like wolfmap.de but some other games aren’t so lucky. Anyway, if you have a file that you have since deleted on RTCWFiles, go get it now.

Since I know this sounds kinda ‘jokish’ (what with FileFront admins not yet saying anything), I can give an example. On JK3files, one of the main reviewers is AmonRa and he has just started two sites with Bravenet called jksource.com and jksource.net, to try and create a storage facility for the JKA and JKO modding community.

http://www.map-craft.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=23585#23585
This is some info (NAB622 is a file reviewer)

Sorry to be the be the bringer of bad news.

edit: as posted on http://www.jksource.com/:

As you have no doubt heard, FileFront has pulled the plug, but a few people including myself will not let this be the end of the JK2 and JK3 community, this site here will be the new and IMPROVED JKFiles… All FileFront sites are scheduled to be taken offline at the end of THIS MONTH… my team are working hard to download the best files from the site, for uploading to JK Source, however we will request permission from authors first of course. We are hoping to have a smooth transition of the community, so spread the word!

And yes, this applies to the entire network.

as always, I’m willing to mirror any W:ET tools or other programs of interest relating to the wolfenstein franchise, I’ll be re-doing and re-indexing our download section soon to include RTCW, W:ET, ET:QW, and Wolfenstein tools, mapping resources and modelling

(IndyJones) #3

we’ve got northerner on this board. perhaps he can confirm it… or it’s upcoming april fool?

(TomTom7777) #4

If true this is the worst news since the home office quarantined the tapirs :stroggtapir: for Tapir Wars at Heathrow. (Or is there some other reason the Tapir wars project isn’t providing us with updates?)

Update:
Ok I am now just about 100% convinced.
So let me Thank Northener for all his good efforts over the many years, (I have already given FF its due elsewhere). I hope he can find a fun place to park his talent soon, one that treats its contributors a little better.
And I raise a glass in salute to Nail, Marko and others who I know will do a good job carrying a piece of the torch that is this wonderful community driven game.

(Marko) #5

For specific map maker ressources, I’m willing to host them all in the Mapper’s Database.

It can take map source files, screenshots, scripts, textures, models… basically anything a map maker needs

The official message from FileFront is Here

This includes RTCW Files as well.

March 30 is the last day. :frowning:

(Berzerkr) #7

The whole FileFront network is closing?
RTCWfiles is/was one of my favorite sites since 2002. :frowning:

(aaa3) #8

mine too. and this will mean we forever lose many obscure maps, unless someone starts to mass-download them :frowning:

(Pande) #9

They have been mass backed up for EF(eliteforce), JK (Jedi Knight Series) and some others. NOT W:ET though.

If you wanna start a group, its not hard. Gather 10-20 people on msn with bandwidth to spare (hint… use school wireless xD) and download away. Save them in propper files and make sure no one is dl’ign the same thing as someone else. It CAN be done, you have 3 days.

(Pande) #10

Remember if your hosting files after, you may not host the reviews or comments. They are property of filefront.

(Magic) #11

Filefront has been a good site - to bad its closing down.
I have a lot of the custom maps for RTCW and W:ET - can be send on request.

(IndyJones) #12

just got reply from filefront. there is no way to grab files via ftp directyl… what a shame, but on other hand - rtcwfiles was never a good resource site for w:et - for that case i prefer wolfmap.de .

(Nail) #13

Resource sites need to get together and make sure W:ET resources are completely covered but not too much duplication, I have unlimited storage and bandwidth capacity for large files that some of the other sites might find cost prohibitive. I’ll be busy till Apr 4, but after that will be trying to re-organize our downloads. Marko, Magic, EB lets figure this out

(Wezelkrozum) #14

I downloaded the directory Tools and Utilities and the next directory i’m going to download is Skins.

EDIT: I downloaded the directory Skins and Official Server Files. And i’m going to download the directory Official Patches.

EDIT(2): I downloaded the directory Official Patches and I’m going to download the directory Official Demos

EDIT(3): I downloaded the directory Official Demos and I’m going to download the directory Modifications (and this directory is large)

(Still 4 directories left)

The killer here is the RTCW archive.

RTCWFiles was the main place for everything related to RTCW, the ET community has this site and a slew of others that mirror the ET content - wolfmap.de is a good example.

Most of the RTCW community has moved on and most of those mirror sites are long gone.

Good luck grabbing what you can in the few days that we have left.

(aaa3) #16

hell, wezel! now thats very damn nice work!!

[just for perfectness sake - are you preserving the directory structure with names too, and saving text descripton too when trhe actual zip is lacking em? if not dont bother at all with the last one especially, can make it in the last moment if making at all, when more imprtant things are done, jsut asked from being curious not coz expecting it; thanks goes to you i think, in everybody"s name for doing such a hard repetitive job for the whole communitys gain]

(Magic) #17

Have been downloading most of the maps folder - will try to pick up some more this weekend.

(Pande) #18

Great. Remember that if you rehost these files, you may not use FileFront reviews, you must make your own reviews. (Copy right) you also cannot take file front pictures (even ones submitted by members)

(aaa3) #19

iirc u can take the pictures; at least, in many cases they are the ones which are included in the zip, and if i did understood the automatic uploading system with emails and zip content requirements back then when i was reading it, then these are the pics which are displayed, and these are made by the members and the zips are the zips verbatim as the member sent them in, it wasnt ff staff who added the pics to the page and/or to the zips. so when the zips containing pics u can use 'em in my understanding, and if the ff page have ones and the zip not (howwould this be possible? and is there even 1 such one?)m, then exactly as you have said, u cant.

[edit - came across the first files where the screens were not in the dl-able pack. 2 possibilities; 1 only the inside pack is for dl and outside contained them (less likely as i was already saw some pack which looked like outside packs), or they were really made by ff staff (more likely).]

the same are the “dewscription” field; im not sure but wasnt this content also by the uploader? rewievs by ff, hell yeah thats sure that no.

Wolfmap.de has quite a few RTCW files, check there to save duplication and time
