[Field Ops] artillary strike vstr - is this cheating?

(twiFight) #1

It happens to me a lot that I get shot when I try to fire an artillary strike. As you probably know you have to select binocs, secondary fire, aim, primary fire and secondary fire again. Not really a problem, except I get shot a lot while pressing all the buttons which takes a lot of time with my key bindings. Whilst playing on a pub the other day I noticed a few times that other field ops could do this really really fast. Which made me think about something I had learned with Quake 3; the vstr. So I started making a vstr to quickly do the steps as mentioned above by just pressing one key.

First of all: do you consider this as cheating? What do the players think? And how about Splash Damage? Is this just being smart and using the engine to its fullest, or is it unfair and doing things the game wasn’t designed for? I know it could give me a clear advantage, but then again I also binded a vstr to call for a medic, which is pretty much fully accepted by all players and has even been discussed on this forum.

Secondly: my vstr so far isn’t working. Can somebody help me with it? Let me make one thing clear - I’m no cheater, if most of the people think this is cheating I will not use this in the game and I’ll remove the following code so that others can’t take advantage of it either. Anyway, this is what I have so far:

// artillary strike vstr
set	artill1		"weapalt"
set	artill2		"+attack"
set	artill3		"weaponbank 3"

bind t	"vstr artill1;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;
wait;wait;wait;vstr artill2;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;vstr artill1;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;wait;vstr artill3;"

This code seems to work kinda well with for instance covert ops, but when I use it with FOP it fires for effect but then doesn’t go out of binocs secondary fire. Also, the +attack hangs (in other words it acts as if I’m keeping the primary fire button pressed all the time).
I tried several things, from varying the wait times (btw for ppl that don’t know 1 x wait equals 0.1 sec) to adding/removing the second “weapalt”.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Even if I don’t get it to work I don’t mind cos I like screwing around with code :slight_smile: And let me remind you again that if this is considered as cheating I will not use it.

Hmm no, that’s not cheating but also not smart. Because it’s much simpler. :wink:
Just bind a key to +zoom, then you can hold this key to zoomin, click once to fire the artillery, then release the key and you are back at your weapon. :slight_smile: You can even make a script for this but it’s not really worth it, until you don’t know what to put on a key:
bind X “+zoom; +attack; -attack; -zoom”

hihi

(press b) :slight_smile:

dont even know why they put in the binoculars as a weapon :slight_smile:
only confuses people i guess…

(twiFight) #4

Thanks, didn’t know I could do that.

(Kendle) #5

When Field-Op I have “+zoom” on my mouse thumb button. I can put my thumb on the button, take aim, click fire (mouse1) and release both in a fraction of a second. Easy. No need to use scripts. But then I wouldn’t argue that it was cheating even if you did. :slight_smile:

It’s not cheating, just smart, aggressive play.
I have binocs bound to a button. Great for doing strafing arty calls around corners.

//
// Direct Support Fire Script (only for Field Ops)
//
bind "X" "+zoom;+attack;-attack;-zoom"
//

source (<- some useful scripts … e.g. duck-script, demo-toggle-script, binoc-script, … )

Or again one could just simply press or even hold the button labled “B”

Good idea tho, doing stuff like that is always fun. But “B” works great for me… I can still strafe/shoot and call arty virtually the same exact time… so… :drink:

(twiFight) #9

What probably went wrong with my code is the missing “-attack”
Anyway I binded/bound (sorry my english isn’t very good, please tell me which one it is) the t key to “+zoom” now, which works great. B doesn’t work for me cos frankly… B isn’t binded/bound to binocs in my config :slight_smile: I’m actually wandering if I binden/bound it at all.
The 7 key worked fine for me but now I have to hit the 8 key which is so far away that if I press it it distracts me from the game which causes me to get… well… shot to bloody pieces.

7 was not fine, it sucked. Pressing 7 puts away your gun (takes 1/2 second), gets out binoculars (another 1/2 second). Then when you need to shoot, it takes another whole second to switch back to a real weapon.

Using +zoom, it takes just 1/10 second to change from binoc view to your normal gun. ALL decent fieldops do this! They can Fire For Effect in the middle of a giant gunbattle, without even slowing down (like in the middle of reloading)

Did you notice how ALL classes get binoculars when they earn level 1 battlesense? The only reason that skill is useful is because of +zoom. If you had to switch weapons to binocs, it would waste too much time to ever bother.

(twiFight) #11

Like I said, I didn’t know that before :slight_smile:
I only have been playing FOP for a short while, before I was always engineer

Hmm I still think Pressing “B” or “c” in my case is the best way…

It takes 1/10th of a second
AND you can aim better, as for thescript you cant aim it does it where every you are looking which might not be anywhere near where you want… i.e on fuel dump you are by sniper hill and want to artillary strike the walkway above the doors that the tank blows up you can aim for it using Bins but with script you might just be a bit to high and hit the back mountin (no use :’()

(twiFight) #13

even if you use a script you can always do it manually.
The script doesn’t mean you can’t use zoom or weapon bank 8 anymore.

(Fusen) #14

all you need to do is aim with crosshair where you want it and press the script’s bind button and then it does it there

walbanger you seem to be against anything that alters/helps the way people play at all lol =P

What?? did i miss something here??
I said for me press ing “B” is easier than the script in my mind…
Where on earth did you get your last sentance from??? You mad man…
I was telling him what works of me and the “problem” with the script, hows that NOT helping someone??? Now hes got 2 things to think about and see which he likes best…hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

My mate uses the Above script and to be honest he Never gets an Airstike on target at long range :smiley: :clap:

(Kamel) #16

errrmmmm, it’s amazing that someone who knows what binds are doesn’t know to hit “b”.

no mean to be offencive or anything, so please dont take this wrong, but it’s truely amazing how many people play this game and don’t read the users manual that comes with it. if you’re a good player, reading the user manual that comes with it will make you a better player, unless you’ve learned everything by just playing.

(twiFight) #17

and it’s amazing that someone who lives in the USA says something like “no mean to be offencive”
We all make mistakes dude…

(kotkis) #18

_NeT_WalBanger is actually right. You can’t aim the artillery 100% accurately with your crosshair. Go to battery as an axis and try spotting people who are swimming in the ocean with your crosshair and then press your +zoom key. You might surprise how different the place you’re pointing at is (and this is not because they’ve swam away already :smiley: .
