Female merc body types could use more variation

(AssortedStuff) #1

I’ve noticed female mercs are all slim, the only change is height. Why not have overweight female characters?
(no, I’m not trolling. I think it is something to be considered)

Which reminds me something else; the game is offline so I can’t check it but in regards to male mercs I can’t recall a shorter one. Females have proxy but males are all kind of the same height aren’t they?
(this point reminds me of Borderlands’ Salvador)

no.
thnx.
keep 'em sexy.

As long as they don’t get the UT2k4 treatment I’m fine with bigger. So far I think SD is doing a really excellent job in keeping a tasteful attractive / practical middleground when it comes to female characters. But then again, I’m a dude so I might be biased.

Sexy is irrelevant and to be honest I’m very happy that the female merc are not “sexed-up” like video game characters are all too often. You don’t get in the merc business because of your good looks. On the flip side, a truly obese merc, male or female, wouldn’t make sense either: this job does require some physical fitness. I imagine Rhino outside of his body armor would look more like an american football lineman than a Buddha. I think female mercs that look beefier while still healthy could be a fine addition if done right (i.e. not in a caricatural way).

This is something we’re definitely looking at with planned future Mercs

There is a game for the OP already:

I don’t even…

Thanks for that image.

I for one really dig that they went crazy with the models! Try selecting the Rambo dude with underwear only

It isn’t even so much that set of clothes, it just gets worse from there.

I got bored of the game a while ago though. Too spammy for my tastes.

I wasn’t really talking about the clothes either, rather the boldness in their design desigions. If done properly I don’t see a problem. If anything it will make it easier to distinguis what merc you are facing.

Regarding the gameplay though, I feel the same as you do.

Nothing personal, but how do you know what people generally find sexy? I mean the current ladies ARE definitely sexy, no doubt about that and kudos to SD for their great design overall, but I’d definitely have nothing against a girl that is a bit more voluptuous. And I’m not saying SD is supposed to go down the obese road, but I’m personally more of a milfy/meaty guy in terms of the kind of women I prefer

Just from their physiques alone, if I’d have to choose between Keira Knightely and Namitha Kapoor, skinny ol’ Keira would never stand the slightest chance against her, sry.

PS: I didn’t knew Namitha before, just googled “voluptuous celeb” and choose her for a quick comparison to Keira.

without going grotesque like Loadout ,One overweigth woman ,kind of Prison gardien feminist ,could add some fun dimension to the game .And who knows she might fall in love with rhino :=))))

(tokamak) #13

Well on that point. Shouldn’t there also be more hot guys in this game? Currently most of them are mostly rugged and gritty. Wouldn’t be fair to only have the chicks being hot.

This is actually a problem i have currently with the mercs, they are difficult to distinguish from one another, the only way i know its a proxy usually is because its unhittable

I’d just like to point out that overweight doesn’t have to mean morbidly obese. A merc too big would move too slowly and be too easy to hit.
I was just looking for some physical variation in the mercs. And perhaps some resemblance to what you see everyday around you.

Not sure if this chart is correct but here is a reference:

Cool chart. I think physiques 1-3 would make sense for DB, even though I’d say the descriptions(just regarding the silhouettes, not the BMI written below them) are all one body-type ahead; i.e. #1=skinny, #2=normal, #3=overweight, etc.

(tokamak) #18

There’s two discussions here. One is silhouette diversity for gameplay purposes and one is about displaying women in a socially responsible way.

Nader has quite a large silhouette while being a rather slim character so even if you want all girls to be attractive then there’s a way to get silhouette diversity. And that’s beside the point that having female characters among male characters already greatly widens the scope of possible silhouettes.

Then there’s the social responsible factor on displaying body-types and attractiveness. In that light I don’t think every female character has to be some supermodel just like not every male merc isn’t that ‘dashing’ either.

Now to that should also be added that there’s a difference between ‘character aesthetic’ and ‘design aesthetic’. Some games try to create a ‘hot’ character that’s been designed horribly and some games have a ‘rugged’ character that has been designed really well (Brink comes to mind). So even if you go with more ehm, ‘rugby’ like women, there’s still ways to make them characterful and give them their own flair.

Anyway, yeah, bit of a sensitive topic to discuss considering how controversial women and gaming has been in the past.

I wasn’t having this issue, generally, except with phoenix and the wallhack sniper

(Floris) #20

I’m surprised so many people care about gender, for me every character could be androgynous and it would not change a thing.
