female avatars or more male customization?

(signofzeta) #1

This thread is just for me to know if people even remotely cares that there is more customization in the already made male avatars.

(tokamak) #2

Twice as much male customisation any time.

(Apples) #3

Want female definitly, but in a downloadable patch later if needed, with also new male pieces of equiment maybe…

(H0RSE) #4

You can add females, but only AFTER launch, like in a patch or DLC. Don’t detract any initial resources from the current customization.

(Metal-Geo) #5

Female characters will require a crapload of new voice actresses and dialogues to yell, though.

So eh… As much as I’d like to have female characters in BRINK, I just can’t see it happening now… or ever.

(.Chris.) #6

No player model customisation would be more awesome.

(Nail) #7

why does this thread exist ?
isn’t all this covered in the other thread ?

(DarkangelUK) #8

I think it kinda stems from what was said, if they were to implement female models, that would mean reduced customization for males. He wants to gauge if people would rather take the reduction in favour of female models, or not take the sacrifice.

Since we know it’s not gonna happen… yes the poll is pointless.

not pointless if it were posted in the past, but I just want to know, if it was before you knew about brink, long before they even started making character models, would you have female avatars or more male customizations? I want to see if people prefer more male customizations as opposed to female avatars.

I want to know if this is the reason that made Splash Damage completely omit female avatars in favor of male customization.

I also want to put that other thread to rest, although posting in that thread is way too addicting.

But wouldn’t it be more better to make avatars for both genders, and put more customization as an add-on? I dunno, just sayin. Too late now though.

(DarkangelUK) #10

They’ve said several times, very clearly, why females were left out. Their choice in the poll is no, they didn’t want to sacrifice male customization for female models… i thought that was very evident.

(signofzeta) #11

and they stand by their decision before the game was even made?

Suppose people wanted more female avatars and Splash Damage hasn’t done the models and animations yet, would they have approached this game differently?

(SockDog) #12

It’s a design choice that SD have probably made hundreds of in the course of making brink. I’m sure they similarly limited the number of voice accents for the same reason yet do we need a poll to ask if we’d prefer more dialog or less dialog with more accents.

As gamers we should want both male and female characters and tons of voice work, textures, customisation etc. SD gets paid to make the hard choices, cutting stuff from our list of wants and putting the rest into a solid game, a game that makes up for any omissions by being awesome anyway.

Why wouldn’t they stand by their decision? The games been in development for over 2 years now, you think it’s just easy to turn around 66% of the way through development and decide ‘oh bugger it, we’ll add it!’ for something that’s not exactly a subtle addition. It’s not that simple, and obviously no mean feat if it came down to scrapping the models out of design choice and necessity… as has been explained!

It wouldn’t matter what the people want, cos the people didn’t know what the game was, what was involved or even what the name of it was. As i said, it was just under 2 years of development before they were even allowed to announce the title… so the decision was made a long time ago not to include them, and major work had already begun on the male models and animations.

(WhiteAden) #14

Female characters will only result in modders making nude models, and thus ruining the whole game… yes, this is a shooter, yes, women are equal to men, but NO, women characters in online shooters don’t “add” to the game, thus aren’t a necessity… I’d prefer more customization in the male characters over adding female characters any day…!

(Rahdo) #15

Basically, we decided early on that if we can’t do it ‘right’, we shouldn’t do it at all. I defiintely stand by the ‘lets not do something half-assed’ approach to game development…

(tokamak) #16

And by all means, don’t let any DLC budget you guys might have be wasted on it either.

(Rahdo) #17

well that’ll be up to what bethesda wants to pay us to do… so really, fans of the female form should be talking to them.

or they could start a collection. about a quarter million pounds should cover dev costs…

(tokamak) #18

Hey that’s fun, how much does one map cost?

(Rahdo) #19

no idea. i just grabbed a number out of the air above  i know how much our monthly company burn rate is, but i’m not allowed to say. it is a gob smacking lot though!

As soon as I started watching the trailers and gameplay I got really excited, but somewhere in the middle I went “wait… another one without female character option?”.
I know shooters are very much a guy thing, but there are female players who would love to be aknowledged. I know many game designer wonder why there aren’t more women playing videogames, well, part of the problem is thinking “they won’t be playing anyway, so why putting content for them”. Of course thinking that what we want is only pink ponys on rainbows shopping for flowery purses is not helping.
What I’ve seen in many threads about this subjects in this forum is that when mentioning female characters many imediatly think “bouncy bikini boobs”; and that is how ladies are portraid in most videogames. Well how about you take part in changing this image and make some tough rough looking women who do not fall onto the ground with the weight of a pistol?
Of course that if you make polls like this most answers will be “less oestrogen, more content for us!”, because most players ARE male, there’s no denying it. But since when is it right to ignore minorities just because they are minorities? do we not matter at all?
If there wasn’t a choice presented to players, if you just made a female option and gave less customisation to everyone, do you really think people would rage and destroy you with slogans like “Remove the females, turn it into more stuff for us manly manly men!”. I really don’t see that happening.
