Feature request: External serverbrowser with chatlobby

(makron) #1

(i’m to lazy to read through my post so there may well be spellingerrors of the worst kind :P)

With ingame serverbrowser’s much like the ones in Quake 3 and Quake 4 you don’t get a good overview and it takes time to start the game and exit just to take a look at a server, you’ll have to do this a number of times too since there are servers wich doesn’t work for everybody.

With an external browser, in a simple Windows window:

You can chat with friends who you would like to play with on IRC, ICQ, AIM, MSN etc. when discussing serverchoic etc.

And because it’s not ingame you can have it on all the time, where ppl can contact you when you’re not playing, you’ll stay in contact with the community all the time.

Another additional feature in this program could be a simple textbox with news concerning ET:QW.

With almost all of the games I play, I use All-Seeing Eye wich is easy to use and such… The only games I don’t use an other browser than the games itself are Steam-games.

This browser doesn’t have to be like Steam - A simple serverbrowser with a chatlobby, much like IRC or something similiar and a friendslist.

You want us to make something like ASE, but with less features, that only works with one game you have?

The benefit of an in-game browser is that you already have the game running. Obvious drawbacks all relate to usability and interface (since you’re missing all the usual widgets you get in your OS).

I’m not sure it would be worth reinventing the wheel to add ETQW-specific features like a news ticker (who would have access to that to add content, anyway?).

i think he means something like the steam server browser

ASE and XFire have most of the functionalities. Why bother making a game specific external browser when you can have ones that support loads of games? A step backwards me thinks. Though good inbuilt browsing is essential for those who haven’t yet found a home server.

Wils what about an ingame minimizer built in by default, so we can quickly switch to our game browser and back into the game? ^^

(Wils) #6

That sounds straightforward enough - I’ll ask tomorrow.

minimizer good

(kamikazee) #8

Aye, saves more time than windowing the game.

PLZ. :notworthy:

Also:
…what about having a changeable text area for the ‘server info’ window ? (allowable in the server.cfg/whatever.file)

  • For server admins to post information.
