Extreme fps drop

(NinjaNeer) #1

Hi all,

I’m getting a huge fps drop (90 down to 10-12) when I get in to a firefight, and if I kill anyone (other console messages seem to be OK) ET freezes for a second or two.

System is the folowing:
Athlon 2100XP, running at 1.8Ghz
512 3200 DDR RAM
GeForce 4 4800Ti 128DDR

I’ve tried this under XP Pro, and off the Gentoo Games ET boot CD.

Connecting to local servers on a dedicated 256k cable connection, pinging between 20 and 50.

Tried adjusting screen res, and colours to no real avail (got another 1-2 fps). Played with some of the cvars I use for wolf, but again, no change (the details levels change, as do shadows etc, but still same fps)

This seems to happen on all the maps.

Usually these server are pretty full (18-20 players), so that may be the case, but it has put me off ET as it seems the net code got worse from the beta to here

For reference, in rtcw my fps goes from 50-80.

Ideas would be appreciated

This has been happening with a lot of people I have played with so far. I have the same issue but have adjusted some cvars to help.

seta cg_atmosphericEffects 0
seta cg_wolfparticles 0

these 2 helped me greatly, yet I am using very old graphics card, may have to adjust accordingly to ur system as required.

I don’t think PB enabled servers will let you run those. <-I could be wrong

What I did, and its gonna seem really strange, is I capped my FPS at a lower number. Right now I have my FPS capped at 70. And its perfect. My firefights were a slide show and the radar map was just obnoxious, now it is smooth as the ice on railgun.

My kills went up drastically. And I still have my video settings on high detail: 4x, aniso…

My system:
P4 2.53
asus p4pe
1024 DDR 2700
msi gf4 4600/128

have the same probs.
i could play follow games with the highest graphic settings without any probs with fps

Battlefield;rtcw;Mohaa; C&C Generals; etc

In ÉT I have inside 50- 100 Fps

outside 20 - 40

when there is a big fight outside with more players FPS is switching between 10 -25

Also it change very hard if I look on a wall for examble and then to the brige by fueldump (wall 50; Brigde 20)

P III
1,1 GHz
Radeon 9500 pro
512 ddram
Windows 2000

pb does control the above settings.I use also atmosphericeffects 0 but when i play the radar in some maps its still raining… which means pb sets it to 1.

As for the fps you can try the /com_maxfps from 85 which is the default to a higher number. I have it at 125 and it runs fine

Radar is usually fillrate bound. Foliage + fog can amount to a non-trivial amount of overdraw.

Disable FSAA and aniso and/or use a lower-resolution video mode for best performance.

Well, I sat down and tweaked the gfx settings, this is the config file I ran (some parts are not relevent):

seta cg_wolfparticles “0”
seta com_maxfps “76”
seta cg_brassTime “0”
seta cg_bloodFlash “0”
seta cg_showblood “0”
seta cg_marktime “0”
seta com_hunkMegs “256”
seta cg_runpitch “0”
seta cg_runroll “0”
seta cg_bobup “0”
seta cg_bobpitch “0”
seta cg_bobroll “0”
seta cg_bobyaw “0”
seta cg_bloodTime “0”
seta cg_autoReload “0”

Also turned off anti-aliasing under display properties (it was set to application default), reduced texture details and some other minor bits in the system panel (in ET), and now it runs smoothly.

Hits about 40-50 fps on Rail Gun when outside, but stays above 60 on Radar. That might be how I was playing it (pair of clanmates, engy and 2 meds, moving in a fireteam), as we rarely had more than 4-5 on the screen at any one time, and the other guys tended to only be there for a short time…

I do like ET, apart from the attitude of some of the players. As horrible as it sounds, I’d rather pay for a game of this quality (and do Splash Damage accept donations? If only to the caffiene and junk food fund) and play with people who are prepared to pay for it. And put some time and effort into it, rather than pointlessly TK.

Good thing I’ve got next week off, I should be able to get my initial fix of ET by then…
