Extraction PAX Coverage Round-up!

A new blog post has been added:

Extraction PAX Coverage Round-up!

Extraction had its public debut at the Penny Arcade Expo earlier this month, and we’ve had great feedback from players and press alike. We were especially excited to see that FPS Guru named Extraction Best Playable Game of Show, while Warp Zoned named it overall Game of Show. Coverage from the event is still rolling in, and we wanted to share some of our favourite previews and interviews so far.

The build we had at PAX, as well as the resulting feedback from press and players, are in huge part thanks to the dedication and support of all our Closed Alpha testers - you’ve now put in several years of play time and well over 40,000 pieces of forum feedback so far. In short, you’re pretty awesome. Well done.

Right, let’s take a look at some of the coverage we’ve had so far:

It was great to meet you guys in person. Your booth at PAX kicked-ass! One of the nicer booths I visited during the breaks from my own booth.

The game played great (of course) and the few people I spoke to about it said they loved it. I am also happy to announce that during my match, I ended up in 2nd place on the scoreboard!

Woot! There are people out there worse than me at this game! YES!!!

TB video.

That’s a fairly important Mile Stone in the game’s development, a positive review from TotalBisquit. Gj SD!

(Seiniyta) #5

He always liked Splash Damage so it should come to no surprise. However, he did raise some valid concerns and criticism toward the game I hope SD takes to heart.

(jolty) #6

TBs channel is quite a big deal for PC Gaming.

Glad he covered it for the decent exposure, I hope his viewers see the potential that he does for Extraction.

Also good to know he is such an avid fan of Splash Damage and their games.

(iwound) #7

says he’ll be checking out the closed beta. hope the pax ttk was long to make him say that.
i like spongy.

(Scarhand) #8

I don’t agree with some things TB says, such as the bullet sponginess. You should not be able to kill people too fast. If you kill/die too fast you don’t get the feeling of accomplishment in your kills and instead get the feeling of spending the entire game walking from re spawning all the time instead of spending your time in combat. I prefer spending time in combat rather than walking, so I prefer players being able to take quite a bit of damage. Of course that also means clips need to be large enough.

I also disagree with him wanting more gun kick. Realism is for immersion only, and isn’t good when it inhibits gameplay. Games are for experiencing things different than reality. Having gun kick makes kills more lucky than skilled, and inhibits the usefulness of going for headshots. Having too much gun kick just makes the game less competitive.

Please keep the weapons and gameplay simple, so we can have a fun competetive fps.

(Chaosfox) #9

Pretty much agree with TB on the damage model, though I haven’t played Extraction the brink bullet sponginess was horrible, having to put a whole clip into someone is bleh.

(INF3RN0) #10

Let’s just say that TB wasn’t really as accurate as he probably thought he was. Bullet sponge feeling also can occur when a game punishes poor aim. Don’t want to violate NDA, but let’s just say good head aim get’s much quicker kills than in the PAX vids.

Glad to see the closed beta starting 1st Oct, looks like the game is progressing well.

“Kill +100” < “You killed |BOT-Clan| Stefan”.

Classless run’n’gun + Press_F_Occasionally < Class based tactical shooter.

Weapon Kick < ET shooting style.

150 “roles” < 5 classes

PayToUnlock < Balance first.

Blood screen sux.

Being COD-like < Being yourself.

IronSights < fast paced wide fov fun.

The map is rather brown == true

Too much color is even worse than lacking it == true

I also somehow feel there will be “play with friend” option in matchmaking, that will ruin the balance, as it did in CS:GO, but it does not really matter since the above litany is right.

But hey! That’s what an alpha is for, right? To replace bad things with a good stuff! Well, hopefully that gonna happen. I’d really love to have another ET or ETQW to play, these were 2 best shooter games ever. Yet in case SD is going to chose wider audience and compete with titles like COD - I still wish them best of luck, although I also hope the niche we’ve got here will be filled up with something decent again, whoever might fill up the gap. Why might SD want to be the one?

Hmm the comments on youtube (TB) make me a sad panda. A lot of complaints about Nexon and a lot of them say the game looks boring.

From the first page of comments:

Looks crap, honestly. Boring visuals, no feedback in the shooting, boring maps and very generic. I could be wrong because i haven’t played it but honestly Call of Duty even looks far superior.

Oh look - another boring multiplayer fps. Sigh.

boring is the best thing i could say about this game. Graphic is ****ty, seriously, looks worse than games from previous decade.

Oh dear… Publishing with Nexon is an EXTREMELY BAD IDEA.

As soon as everyone joins, everyone in their right mind is probably gonna leave RIGHT AWAY from Nexon’s TERRIBLE FREE TO PLAY MONEY-GRUBBING PIECE OF…-Gasp- Basically, it’s a bad idea.

this looks pretty damn boring, not really innovative in any respect…

Nothing new, let’s move on.

Oh dear… Nexon are involved. I wonder how many “OMG YOU ARE A HACKER” permabans are going to get dropped on players of THIS game just because of lag issues, server glitches, or the fact that the planets didn’t align correctly that day, just like all their other games…

(iwound) #14

very selective.

heres some more.

Doesn’t really look boring, i mean it already looks better than cod ghosts… (not even a joke)

interesting

I liked brink

True, very true indeed. Fortunately, the developers do give a damn in most cases. Of the few issues I’ve had on some of Nexon-published games, I’ve gotten the majority of them resolved through the actual developers.

Well, this **** sounds awesome. I really loved Brink on the PC, also had no issues. And it’s a genius idea to have leveling within a match rather than progressive leveling like they have in the current multiplayer FPS (not just because I had this idea little while back). Damn, can’t wait for this.

Man, I played sooo much Enemy Territory back when it came out and loved every minute. The objective play and interdependency of classes was great. I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Well i’ve liked a lot of nexon’s other published games although combat arms is kinda old now, they usually publish good games although I haven’t played any games from dirty bomb, either way i’m gonna check this game out maybe i’ll get really into it hopefully.

wow, nice, im so happy right now, i miss wolfestein enemy territory so much i couldnt believe there where no other spiritual succesor, thx god u mak a video of this game TB (Y)

I also love Splash Damage and the reason is because of Brink. I freakin love Brink man! But I prefer objective modes in my shooters so I think that makes sense.

I can’t wait to play some Extraction! I preferred the name Dirty Bomb. =p

also all the haters have nothing to back up what theyre saying and have not played it. pure troll.
Hmm the comments on youtube (TB) make me a sad panda. A lot of complaints about Nexon and a lot of them say the game looks boring.

From the first page of comments:
Well, judging from this sole video “nothing interesting” seems a legit impression. It wasn’t a trailer filled with emotions, story and stuff, it was a dull gameplay possibly making no sense in the eyes of a random viewer.

The game starts to live when there is sound of the game, and that was not the case + players talk + you know why are you doing what you see is being done. Therefore I believe ppl’s impressions - bad impressions - were justifiable. It’s generally more fun to play than to watch, and the purpose of the video was rather informative than advertising. Good for us, and those who saw and say it’s “nothing new” still got the “Extraction” in back of their heads for the lifetime almost, so next time they see the title, in a year maybe, it will still do good job no matter what they think of it now. Win, no matter what angle you look at.

The only real problem is, they might actually be right :/. I haven’t played the game so I cannot tell, but I see a lot of things I simply don’t like.

(Ruben0s) #16

I know it’s selective, but the positive ones don’t make me a sad panda.

The negativity about Nexon just worries me. I mean on every video / article you see people complain about Nexon, and not just one but tons of them.
I have no experience with Nexon what so ever, but it start to feel that partnering up with Nexon was a wrong move.

(stealth6) #17

FTFY, I thought the creation of Warchest & Fireteam would suffice, then release the server client to trusted GSP’s. Still not as good as allowing dedicated servers, but that would have been understandable. (security wise)

I hope that the task was just a bit too ambitious and they are now teaming up with nexon to learn the ropes, then on their next title they can go independant. (Seeing as Nexon is used to F2P they can probably show SD a thing or two)
I’m not very optimistic about Extraction, but let’s see what happens.

(igamr) #18

Well I dont now people are whinging its F2p shooter I need to get off my addictions to MOBAs Blacklight is great but I need some fresh meat cant wait till oct 1st might even buy a founder pack if the games good once I play it.

(.FROST.) #19

Just stumbled over this thread, when I wanted to link TB’s “My thoughts on…” video myself. But since iwound already did that I can only say, that I’m 90% with TB, especially when he compared XT with Brink.

Brink was a needed step forward in the FPS genre, but not that well executet; XT on the other hand is almost a step backwards, in terms of innovation and presentation, but very well executet.

With other words; for me Brink is still(by far) the emotional winner, whereas XT is definitely the technical winner.

(iwound) #20

I thought it interesting that a dev had told him that certain characters would get smart movement,
but not all.
