Extraction PAX Coverage Round-up!
Just stumbled over this thread, when I wanted to link TB’s “My thoughts on…” video myself. But since iwound already did that I can only say, that I’m 90% with TB, especially when he compared XT with Brink.

Brink was a needed step forward in the FPS genre, but not that well executet; XT on the other hand is almost a step backwards, in terms of innovation and presentation, but very well executet.

With other words; for me Brink is still(by far) the emotional winner, whereas XT is definitely the technical winner.
Another way of looking at it is that we’re attempting to get a solid foundation in place before experimenting with features that haven’t been done before.

Will invites be going out prior to the 1st?

That’s the best way to approach it and I have no doubt, that XT will further advance. I just want to “encourage” you guys to go beyond the standard fare we are so used to by now. I’m sure you all don’t need my personal encouragement, since you all certainly know what you are doing and where you wanna go with XT; but I just can’t stop imagine a game that incorporates the unique style that Brink had* and the strong technical foundation(together with ECHO) and polish that XT has. That doesn’t mean, that I think XT is average, by no means, but it’s still a bit too much on the “playing it safe”-side of things. Regardless of that, it’s the only FPS game I play. I’m really a great fan of your games, but I’m not without critique.

In this regard, keep it up guys:)

*visually and gameplay wise

Agree. Don’t hesitate to add depth, humour and wierd stuff. “T4pir” on the missle in BRINK, hidden message inside morse code, socks on the table on Fueldump are some small example. Then, as said above, add some game mechanics that makes this game stand out. But I guess you knew that already. Just a FROST-inspired encouragement here.

You’d meet closely with a brink like that you’d be equally careful to never leave terra firma again.

Yet seriously - true, from what I know about the game it feels way too gray. Not in colors, to be sure on that score, I prefer calm color transitions to colorful splash on the screen, but there still is a profound want of contrast - some edges of gameplay, of rules. Just like class differentiation. Instead of having predigested class-soup of “roles”, I would prefer to see some sharp image of good old classes. Engineer as the only class that constructs and disarms. CovertOps the only hacker. Medic the only reviving… It’s why we were here all these years. It’s not because we like COD-alike games, where everything is so easy that all you need to do is run and gun until bored. In such games what constitutes the fun is removed because “it causes problems”. That way, but a bit further, all the objectives are wrong thing - they’re just bugging people! Where there is no challenge, there is no fun.

The blurred rules and simplification combined with a bit of COD stylization seems to me wrong, but why might I say the game is simply bad at once? I haven’t yet gave it a try, so I just want to forward a notice that something feels very much off track here and thus extend Frosts comment on the lack of out-of-comfort-zone ideas in the game. This is safe to make a game “soft-core”, but there are already plenty of soft core shooters. many of them are free to play.

IMO it’s more a reference to sound and visual feedback rather than recoil. Toying with weapon skins in L4D2 bring different visuals and audio to the same underlying weapons and can make things seem a lot different as a result.

I like recoil on guns because I’m used to it in most shooters. Nevertheless guns with no recoil will make this game much easier for me since I’ll be able to spend more time focusing on strategy more than my gun’s recoil pattern.
