Extra monitor (not for actual gaming)

(chippy) #1

So I recently set up an extra monitor again and noticed that it had a pretty huge negative impact on DB. Easily dropped 40-50 fps (if not more) and the game felt as if it was run on a 60Hz screen. Most if it went away when I turned on “Single display performance” in the nVidia settings but it’s still very noticeable. However after this change it feels as if I’m suffering from loss rather than having FPS/Hz issues as before.

Has anyone else experienced this? I had the exact same setup 6 or so months ago (with an even lower end PC than now) and did not have any issues at all…

Keep in mind, I’m not actually using my second monitor for gaming at all, no SLI or anything like that. Just as an extra display with some stuff on it, IRC, steam chat, music etc, you get the idea.

When you enable the dual display mode does it drop your refresh rate down to 60hz? You might want to check your settings to make sure you’re not forcing the same refresh rates across both screens. I’ve been running dual monitors at 120hz and 75hz forever.

(chippy) #3

Yeah I’ve checked it and they are running at 120hz and 60hz respectively it just “feels” as if the 120hz one is running on 60hz. It’s very hard to explain it…

(ailmanki) #4

Is your extra monitor defined as main screen? Is your gaming monitor set to 120hz in windows setting?

(chippy) #5

Yes, the 120Hz monitor that I use is defined as the main monitor and is running at 120Hz. I cant see any settings that are “wrong” in this sense, speciellt since it only occurs in DB.

Try setting windows appearance theme to basic mode / disable aero.

We’re seeing if this is something the game should do automatically when it launches.

Interesting post… I have qq’ed about performance in the past and I also run 2 monitors… main at 144hz and one at 120hz with SLI… This possible could be my problem…

What do we need to test? Detailed steps in what you want to see?

FYI in tried COD and now I remember why I quit black ops 2

Was there more then 6 people in the server?

(Mustang) #9

Lol no!

Don’t you dare…

Have it as an option by all means, but don’t forcefully take over people’s personal preference settings at the OS level.

(chippy) #10

It’s the same no matter the amount of people on a server. As soon as I unplug the extra monitor and relaunch the game it’s all fine and dandy. Reason I think it’s something to do with DB is because it’s the only game I can actually notice a difference. This can absolutely just be down to DB not being optimized as much just yet though.

+1 I will try to disable it and see if it makes a difference but it should definately not be forced by the game.

(spookify) #12

For Testing Reasons is there a way to disable the second monitor with out unplugging the cable? I hate screwing those things in!

(Mustang) #13

On Win8 you can do Win+P then select “PC screen only”.

Yep, I don’t like games who decide for me, let the user decide what he wants.
Add an extra option is a better way.

(spookify) #15

I will test this at Lunch! I hope there will be people on DB!

Win7 too…

(Mustang) #18

Okay nice, thanks for confirming, didn’t have a Win7 system on hand to check.

(spookify) #19

It could be a placebo effect but it seems to run better on one monitor…

I turned my second monitor off with WIN+P

THEN

I tested to see what my FPS was… With ONEFRAMELAG ON it was steady at 144 like normal for me…

With Oneframelag off it took awhile after the vid restart to get up and hold at 144 but it did… I think thats the first time with oneframelag OFF that I was able to hold frames…

NOTE: With Oneframelag OFF it felt like I got HUGE Mouse Accel!!! I would be tracking and then suddenly fly by the enemy… It felt more crips but then a ton worse at the same time…

(spookify) #20

A full 16 person OBJ server with Oneframelag ON I get small Millisecond twitches or vibrations in my mouse movement or player animation…
