Can there be a special competitive mode where everything is unlock and let the skill players do their thing?

(tokamak) #42

I’m sure there’ll be server commands for that just like in W:ET and ETQW.

(MILFandCookies) #43

QW didnt have a competition mode out of the box, which i think is what sword is asking.

(tokamak) #44

But it did have a maxed out level setting as far as I can remember.

(MILFandCookies) #45

If anything you want to restrict what people have access to in competition modes - rulesets
Which QW didnt have on release.

(tokamak) #46

Which wasn’t what he was asking for.

(MILFandCookies) #47

Oh dear.

Unlocking everything isnt a “special comp mode”

(zXSwordXz) #48

Guys, I was a little vague in my question but I think Milf&Cookies pickup on my understanding. (No disrespect to tokamak. I want a competitive mode out of the box where everything is unlock but the host have the flexibility to set restriction.

(tokamak) #49

Yeah that’s a comp mod. It’s just that a sever setting with everything unlocked is likely to be available right off the bat as that’s what the devs are usually testing with.

I can see this being awesome fun over VOIP
“The fat guy with the red baseball cap is coming your way again… GET HIM!!!”

(Rahdo) #51

It is definitely my intension to talk to you guys (and the crossfire guys, and anyone else I can talk to for that matter) about the specifics of how to best set up server settings to encourage comp play vs. casual play and get feedback. Will say more as soon as I’m not gagged

A chess rating system for clans would be so good for this.

Competition always got neglected because the game only officially recognised ranked public games. Now the rank public games were great, it always ensured a good core game whenever you wanted it. All games like these need is official recognition for clan fights. Lower the bar so low that a bunch of friends can join a clan at any time and hop in.

With matchmaking a “find me a team to play my team” search, should be doable
And sounds like a nice idea

(Nail) #54

matchmaking is done on #IRC, best way imo

(Mustang) #55

I think if done well an ingame system could be better than through IRC
Not like the L4D1/2 crappness
It would take some effort, but I can see into the future right now

(DarkangelUK) #56

How about both? An ‘Instant Action’ button dumps you into the automatic match making system just like you’d expect, or you can hit ‘Browse Servers’ to look for a specific server to play on with filters available.

(tokamak) #57

UT3 has a pretty solid system like that.

Hey, maybe this is an idea.

You can form a team inside your buddy list, toggle everybody ready for a ‘rated’ match and then join the game as you normally would. You will just keep playing the game as if you would with a bunch of friends until the system finds another team that also has ‘rated’ toggled on and you will both be pitched against each other.

I really would take a close look at the way WoW has organised it’s arena ratings (team and personal ratings) and it’s new automatic instance finder. It works and it I’m pretty confident it will result in a thriving competition community.

You can even discern between ‘skirmish’ (practice battles) and ‘rated’ (ladder).

Brink already tries to lure the singleplayers into multiplayer. A logical next step would be to lure the multiplayers into competition.

Ok, so just to be clear, the leveling up is more like the rank systems in games like BF2 and MW2, and not like a traditional RPG? Because I can’t see RPG-style leveling up working in a competitive online shooter. It’d have to be more of a rank system, with weapons upgrades, and not more powerful characters and stuff like that. Would be nice with some clarification.

(tokamak) #59

It’s bland ‘overall’ upgrades that don’t work in competition settings, you’ll need to converge in a specialisation in order to keep things interesting.

I really hope console gamers get nice competitive options also
