I understand that you can get EXP but what does it do? level up and unlock more weapons, and cloths for true customization or just level up your rank?

This is something that as somewhat a newcomer to Brink I would like to know also.
At the end of the airport video, he says something like “you gain xp to spend on cool weapon upgrades, cool abilities, to reflect your style of play, and cool outfits to reflect what a badass you are.”
And since it is XP, you will probably gain “levels” as well.
As I understand it you can spend XP on gameplay-affecting upgrades (new weapons, more armour, new abilities and tools, etc) but only have a few of these active at a time (you can change them from the command posts I think). You can also get non-gameplay-affecting stuff to apply to your character. Not sure if the game has levels/ranks or if they affect gameplay but I really hope not.
Aye, it’s unlikely that both cosmetic and gameplay rewards will come from the same resource.
No, they are not gameplay affecting. You use XP to unlock clothing for your character which is for aesthetic purposes only, not to make you better in the game. You can’t get new guns etc as far as I know.
I thought at the end of the airport video, he said you can spend XP on new abilities and weapon upgrades, along with outfits and such for your character.
Yeah sure but that’s more in the sense of “hey you can build characters” than anything else.
How so? If you can get abilities and weapon upgrades, then your character will have…abilities and weapon upgrades. You can use them in matches, and can be ‘gameplay affecting.’ You make it sound like “O yay! new abilities and upgrades! I just unlocked a new dance and a fishbowl prop! My guy is gonna look so cool! I wish I could use these in the actual game :(” emote: /cry.
I think it would be better if Exp rewards gave you more choice and variety rather than more poweful guns like COD4.
Someone who isn’t a good player should not be able to beat good players simply because they have played the game longer. If that is the case then the game isn’t about skill but time invested like MMO’s.
If it were up to me there would be no rewards that effected gameplay. There going to be taken out for compeition purposes anyway.

+1 I agree…
What I meant is that he didn’t necessarily meant you would use the same resource for both gameplay as cosmetic changes, it would be pretty silly.

I personally like power differences in the game they worked great in both ET’s, and especially now Brink makes sure characters are more recognisable you got a nice complex battlefield to play around in.
It should just not go so far that it is impossible for an expert starter to beat a crappy veteran because of it, which wasn’t the case in ET either. Someone who entered the final moments of a campaign has a harder time because of all the built up characters but a good play can still make a huge difference in it.
(and before the comp players start yelling again, of course it makes sense to have everything enabled during a match, or maybe it’s more fun to speed up the progress, oh I don’t know, you figure it out)
What do you mean? Like there is XP for cosmetic upgrades, and a different kind of XP for gameplay changes?
I hope they’re seperate.
Don’t want to go sacrificing performance to make my guy looke bad ass.
Then concentrate on performance, and save looks for last. Also, you may unlock abilities outfits, etc. by accomplishing certain goals or something like that, without having to actually spend anything on them.
What? This is supposed to be a fun game, of course people will want to show off their progress on their characters with stuff they find along the way. Why would they need to waste experience points on it?

The problem with this is that the rewards people will gain will be constant. If they play for 3months and get all the rewards then leave and come back they will still have the rewards it’s not determined by maintaining their skill level just time invested.
In ET the rewards lasted a campaign. If you played well on that particular day you might top the xp and most kills and get the unlocks etc if you played bad you might not.
The very nature of a prolonged xp systems means that people will have longer to catch up on. If you were behind in one campaign all you had to do was wait it out till the next one.
The move to xp systems and levels etc is all about watering gaming down for casuals etc.

in my opinion the exp systems in ET and ETQW were fine. The ones in COD4 and Wolfenstein were not.
Since there is most likely going to be an xp system in Brink then i will settle for a compromise. Have a system that offers incentives to play like extra outfits and different weapons. just don’t make the new weapons more powerful just different and more diverse etc.
This.
Two completley different things should have different resources funding them.
