3Suns, can you scan the copy you printed and post in the forum?

Sorry, I can’t. I will try to post some of the more interesting points when I have time.

They’d probably delete the post anyway, don’t think you are suppsoed to post scanned copies of articles (even if the link does break).
K/D stat is a curse on objective team based gameplay. It is appropriate for deathmatch style games, but not for games like Brink. People will still want to see it so just make it private as it will be less likely to influence their behaviour that way.
If they must do it, then maybe make it so it just shows up for the class that is supposed to kill alot, i.e. the soldier class.
Interesting ideas for implementation (responding late, I missed this first time through). I like them both.
Just one thing to note, in games where there is medic buffing and reviving, I think a lot of people don’t realize that often, a medic’s on-the-fly buff means the difference between life and death for the slayer. When I play as a medic in BC2, I keep the health station at the feet of my team’s most deadly slayers and on MANY occasions I literally see their health go down and up as we are both shooting the enemy. I literally save their asses to kill again - so to those who love the stat, thank a medic for your great K/D ratio.
And now I give you a fun video: “What All Campers Deserve” or “How I Learned To Love the K/D Ratio Stat”
I tried the MyInsiderGamer link again, and it still doesn’t work. Looks like they decided to make a preview article instead.
I wrote a comment regarding the interview requesting that they put it back up and let us read both, but they chose to not approve my comment.
I scanned the interview. It can be viewed in jpg format and read here: p1, p2, p3.
This is the era of the Internet. Once it is out there, its out there. You can’t take that sh!t back. Lesson to all Facebook users.
:stroggtapir: :stroggtapir:
Cheers!
And again, kill, death, and k/d ratio stats are fine but like Cankor said, please keep them private and off the game summary boards.
And Exedore gives great interview!

Just because you are tired of camping snipers doesn’t make griefing acceptable behaviour.
LOL Cankor, that isn’t me griefing the sniper.
That isn’t my video, but I have to say it sure is funny!
(and more relevently, completely impossible in Brink because the gamers choose themselves whether or not they will be revived.) I don’t grief in games, but I have been griefed and I am not above taking pleasure in a griefer getting a little taste of their own medicine.
I know it’s not you. Myself, I never played recon enough in BC2 to earn the radar ball things (haven’t played in awhile so don’t remember what they are called), so it’s not personal, but camping and sniping isn’t griefing. Sure it can be annoying, but it’s not even close to the same thing. There’s only one reasonable response to greifing like that and that’s a ban from the server.
Oh dear.
Thread needs more ppl getting on their clueless moral gaming highground.
As Cankor already mentioned - sniping on a hill isnt griefing.
On the flipside, the vid does demonstrate why /kill is useful

Well, since players revive themselves in Brink, and these are the Brink boards, it really demonstrates nothing.
Besides, the chances of that situation occurring normally (both teams being comprised of people who know each other and conspiring against one guy) seems a bit on the slim side.
that’s what i am concerned of! in every (MP) game i played, some ppl always found exploits of some sort, that were able to ruin (parts) of the game for me.
still my hope are very high with brink
Brink will have exploits. In fact, the more complex the game (and the greater its popularity), the greater the chance of exploits appearing. The beauty of Brink is that Splash Damage is doing their best to address all the “traditional” exploits. The fact that SD is delaying the game an entire year, speaks very well for the length of the grace period before exploits appear, and demonstrates that SD will be dedicated to fixing exploits when they do appear. So, the good news is, Brink’s exploits, when they do appear, will be fresh and new, and mostly likely, quickly squashed.
As regards snipers, depending on the game type and the activity of the sniper, sniping can cross into the realm of griefing:
BTW, I have earned my motion sensor balls in BC2, so I do recognize that it is a great class to play with a legitimate purpose. Like almost anything though, it can be abused - and become abusive.
Ultimately, there are people within both Valve and Splash Damage who consider the very act of sniping to be a form of griefing (or at the very least, very unfun), hence the nature of the sniper in TF2, and the fact that SD has said in the past there would be no sniping in Brink.
Ah, banned from the server. If only that were possible in the console versions. There is no banning, so gamers come up with their own justice. That is one of the big reasons Splash Damage is making so many seemingly “weird” choices like no-mic defaults, auto game dialogue etc… Those are all to tame the wilds of the console networks. Splash Damage is genuinely true to their vision of trying to bring online multiplayer to gamers who don’t want to deal with the ugliness and brutality of console gamers - and PC gamers will have access to all the switches to make their own servers!
My love for SD overfloweth.
One of the most obvious kind of exploit is the ‘soft’ exploit. weapons or set-ups that are just objectively better than the rest. It doesn’t lead to much grieving but it does make the game less interesting because of the mono-culture of selections. In Raven Shield for example, nearly everyone ran around with a G36k, which drastically decreases on of the gameplay layers of treating people with different set ups differently.
i guess we agree almost completely. tho i think we have to wait and see if SD can prove themselves in terms of the time until exploits will appear and their responsiveness.
its sad we always have to come back to Battlefield as an example imo they (DICE) have been a complete disappointment.
anyhow, i share your enthusiasm for what SD will have in stock.
even months before release i’m really growing on the idea to get a ded. PC server on my own. u know just to be in charge of ban’s and settings to make this game as enjoyable online as i hope it will become. i will make the decision on the release date and share the ip with the forum here :stroggtapir:
Brink will be like with Wolfenstein last year, ppl will play it half year & drop it.
In that case I’m just not gonna buy it based on your awesome premonition… saved me some money there.
Well said. What SD is doing with the chat and the character voices is very similar to what Valve did with the L4D series when they broke into that console FPS market with a fresh IP. Instead of having to call out reloading, healing, I’m down, etc, it is all scripted into the game so voice chat isn’t 100% mandatory. That way if you don’t want the screaming masses in your ear the game doesn’t suffer for it on console. Voice chat is superior for communication but the in-game callout help a lot for those who can’t or won’t deal with it. Obviously it doesn’t matter as much if you have a steady playgroup but anything that can help tame the wilds of console multiplayer is appreciated. You just have to allow for the other options so people can customize how they like on their servers and, which SD seems to be doing as well, and then everyone wins.
How to fix K/D?
Make K/D a personal stat viewable only by the players themselves after a match has been played. Instead of making it public.
Make K a public stat viewable by everyone after the match ends.
If you make it so that Kills count as exp, add inflation to it.
For instance
First 10kills = +100exp each
10-20 kills = +50exp each
20-30 kills= +5 exp each
Just to get an idea. This should promote aggressive play and give incentives to people to do the objectives, because well it’s more valuable.
I think even if K/D was a personal stat, players would still obsess over it - just maybe not as much as a global leaderboards. If the numbers are there, regardless if it’s personal or public, there are still gonna be players who feel compelled to “compete” even though they can’t compare it.
i’d much rather like to see ratios on team contribution. i.e. if you exeed 1/8, 12,5% of total team XP you’d get your 1.x+ rating

remove K/D. c-om-pletely.
and most of[other]stats recording, too.
its sounds a bit radical, but its only way to “fix” that “problem”.
