ETQWPro and Linux

(asmo) #1

Do you guys remember the topic about troubles playing etqwpro under linux ?

that it does freeze the whole game from time to time when shooting ?

does anyone remember if there was solution to fix it ?

i heard that the etqwpro’s author was unable to reproduce this error (and imho that should be really easy: install linux + etqw + etqwpro + play few hours with folks = error reproduced) that’s why he gave up on this. But it’s old info, maybe there are some fresh news regarding it?

so many peoples these days call me glitch&noob and want 1vs1 with me on etqwpro, now imagine how does it sound when i say “umm, my etqwpro doesn’t work” obviously they don’t know about this problem and says “coward”. and i’m not !! i think…

(Tanzverbot) #2

I wrote a post explaining exactly how to solve the problem, but it somehow didn’t show up here. Must be some kind of glitch in the forum software. Too bad.

(asmo) #3

funny one, anyone else ?

(darthmob) #4

I had that issue as well but I stopped playing ETQW. Didn’t hear anything besides it wasn’t reproducable as well, though.

(timestart) #5

It’s probably PulseAudio… somehow.

(asmo) #6

Never, i don’t even have PA installed. It’s something directly connected with promod. I think.

(otakustar) #7

promod always segfaults on my machine, gave up trying :frowning:

I’m very glad there is a linux client but its buggier than … (my never ending invite to games from people who did it once is one of the more obvious ones)

Now that being said, I play some etqwpro and yeah its laggier than hell sometimes, ok most of the time much worse than normal ranked. But i haven’t seen a lockup that occurs frequently with regard to just etqwpro. Every once and awhile xorg will freeze and ill have to restart it {ctl alt backspace} but that happens both in vanilla and etqwpro and its infrequent. I did have serious issues logging into taws etqwpro server the other day, kept crashing with regard to entering the password in the popup box in the middle of the screen but it was fixed if i put it in the password in the lower right corner before i tried to log in.

Hey

I never had any issues with Etqw or etqwpro playing under linux.

Only configuring VoIP Input was a very fiddly thing.

Except that ETQW thinks my Eventdriver Mouse is a joystick and turns me the whole time until I disabled joystick support

Asmo: I reported that original promod shooting-freeze bug. It still occurs, but bfs (brain **** scheduler) makes it bit less annoying. Upgrading OS or video driver haven’t help. Maybe i should try different soundcard.

hw specs: E8400, 4GB 800, P45 chipset, 8800GT, SB audigy
sw specs: tried debian 32bit lenny and sid, always latest nvidia drivers

I can chitchat endlessly about this bug’s symptoms in irc, if someone is interested. phryzz @ quakenet

(Stroggafier) #11

Just put up my second Linux system; this one on an older P4. Alas, the vid card isn’t up to snuff and won’t play ETQW.

But what the heck, when it comes to Linux, its the journey that counts, not the destination.

Here are some notes from bug:

[ul]
[li]game seems to freeze (1-2 fps)
[/li][li]freeze happens right after weapon sound starts
[/li][li]during freeze game ignores anything from network (or input device) (*)
[/li][li]bug is weapon related
[/li][li]selfkill doesn’t help, if bug is in someone else’s weapon
[/li][li]bug disappear, when weapon is changed (AR -> pistol) …
[/li][li] … and doesn’t reappear if weapon is changed back (pistol -> AR)
[/li][li]bug may appear even if buggy weapon is fired in area that cannot be heard (salvage last obj. vs mining laser spawn … not 100% sure!)
[/li][li]more players, more often bug appears
[/li][li]i have used promod since 0.5 and all versions have this bug
[/li][li]vanilla and duskmod doesn’t have this bug
[/li][/ul]

*) for example key release; weapon may continue shooting … i can’t say if it’s game or server that doesn’t register key release

asmo: your system specs?
timestart: I use direct alsa device, no PA in system

(Susefreak) #13

this is nothing compared to the mac bugs. Stop whining, we mac users have a harder time then you

that’s exactly the case.
i’m on c2d E7400, gf8800gts, 2gig of ram and sb audigy on alsa as well.
seems it’s sound problem, i think unloading the sound module from kernel and running promod then would “fix” it but i won’t play without sound :stuck_out_tongue:
duskmod doesn’t have this issue, so comparing how it’s implemented in the duskmod and promod in order to fix it would work but having this problem described good enough as for me the promod’s author should be able to fix it then (if it’s not dead project already). who would accept promod’s fix if it didn’t came from it’s author.

edit: using slackware but that doesn’t have matter in this case ;]

(phryzz) #15

Looks like it’s time to throw SB audigy away. I have switched to digital out, so audigy won’t do anything better than mb-integrated soundcard… except introduce promod bugs.

(light_sh4v0r) #16

All creative soundcards have rubbish driver support for Windows already, I can only imagine what it’d be like for Linux then…

(asmo) #17

i have to disagree, sb audigy is much better than integrated cards, i don’t need anything better than it, when it’s about bugs, i think you missed the part in which we’ve mentioned that it affect promod not duskmod or other mods. so can’t really blame sb audigy for that.

(phryzz) #18

Nope… it isn’t audigy’s fault. I still experince same freezes in promod, when audigy is on my desk next monitor. Would it help, if i move audigy into cupboard?

(Kl3ppy) #19

Did u log the game?
Mybe there is a hint what happens in the logs.

(darthmob) #20
Did u log the game?
Mybe there is a hint what happens in the logs.
Do the logs show more than the console? Because it doesn’t print anything special in the console. Back then I still had two screens and checked with one screen showing terminal output and one showing the game.
