ETQW - Too expensive to go stellar?

“Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory” had a huge fanbase, there are literally hundreds upon thousands of people still playing, but aside from being an amazingly fun game, the reason why is because after you purchased the game, you could, for free, play online, as well as modify it to your heart’s content.
I’ve heard that ETQW will not be a free online game. If this is true, I know I won’t be paying a subscription fee to play, (like a LOT of other players I know). I will gladly pay full price for ETQW when it comes out providing that all of the features won’t be sold in an endless series of products, mods, and worlds like MMORPGs such as EverQuest and that online gaming will not require a subscription fee. If there is some sort of endless cost factors involved, I, for one, won’t be very excited about paying over and over to play.
(Sorry if you’ve already addressed these issues elsewhere, didn’t see anything about it.)
In my humble opinion, such an awesome game as ETQW would be unjustly crushed by being too expensive to reach phenomenon-status.

i belive part of the reason many MMO are pay to play is the differnt requirments in terms of servers and admin

in WOW the servers must be provided by the someone other than the comunity and since the company hosts the games they must admin the servers and so wages have to be paid for. if you start to consider how much you would have to pay one staff member per month

if it was a low wage like £1000 a month thats about 30 players paying £30 a month. so depending on how many admins the server have then its taking a large amount from the games taking and in told for WOW the game admins are in the thousands. Although i think they still might be charging a pretty exesive amount

lets just hope PC’s dont go down the console way are making pretty much all games P2P tho

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoever said there will be a subscription. The game is not free as in you will have to pay money to buy it, not to play it.

Everything I’ve heard indicates ET:QW will be a plain old retail game. Buy it once and play and mod as much as you like. Now if it is a huge success, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see an expansion pack, which would also cost money.

I think an expansion pack that adds a new level of combat, such as air combat (even though there are other plans for this), or space combat, would be awesome. I’m just relieved that the subscription fee is not a factor. I can imagine a GDF jet dogfighting enemy forces and accidentally plowing under a GDF soldier with stray rounds… But I don’t know if that’s possible yet. lol

Btw, I’m Matt, I feel kind of rude coming in with such a question when no one knows me.

I hope there won’t be too many expansion packs then.
People (including me) have seen so many EA sequels that expansion packs have got a bad name. (It makes the original game look bad as it looks like the original didn’t got enough fun things imo.)

Well-thought out patches combined with support for the modcommunity (includes mapping) seems better to me.

True.

Great, now this is almost as bad as people asking why the game won’t be free like ET was. Please tell us where you ‘heard’ this, because it’s either from someone very misinformed or someone starting a FUD attempt.

The SD guys got sense. I wouldnt imagine that they are dolla bill whores. Just so long as they got a healthy supply o pies they happy, it would seem!

I didnt mind paying a monthly fee for WoW, but I draw the line at paying for sub-expansions like the Euro Forces for BF2. Along with Oblivion selling horse armor as a buyable add-on, some developers feel milking their games in new ways is good for business, but as a gamer it just plain pisses me off.

Nothing has been said about QW requiring a fee. I just hope they dont try and sell downloaded content like the above examples. UT has it right… giving out free bonus packs to its fans which only increases owner loyalty. Dice/EA on the other hand has most people feeling like all they care about is money. If UT 2007 and BF 2142 were on the rack at the same time, UT 2007 would get my money.

Actually, I reread the information after I had posted here and I realized that it looks different after you find out for sure that QW won’t be subscription-based. The information said the game would not be free, and that’s all, but then again, they weren’t using a particularly high knowledge of vocabulary, so I was confused by it a bit. The website was redalert.com on the QW FAQ page.
