I’d be also very interested in ET:QW server setups (will it be like for W:ET?) and i have one really lame question - I guess server software wouldn’t be for free, right?

Probably more like Doom 3 or Quake 4.

They will rely on people hosting servers, so I assume it will be free (though you may need the original game to install it) in the same sense as previous id engine games.

I think it would be more like Doom3 and Quake4 as that’s the engine it’s based on. Most cvar should be named similar to Quake4, with the addition of all the game specific cvars.

The game install usually features a dedicated server binary for windows, or the same can be achieved by adding a “+dedicated” paramater to your shortcuts. Sometimes the separate binary is added later. I find the results of the shortcut and the separate binary are the same.

id Software provides linux servers on their ftp and torrent sites. This is just the binary, it does not include the game content which you will need of the CD. That would be the pk3/pk4 files.

That’s the way it has been most of these years. What does not remain clear is the licensing of said server, and it’s attachment to the cdkey/serial. In other words, it’s not clear if you need to “buy” another retail box to host a linux server.

Common practice is different, I believe most servers out there do not have a cdkey/serial attached to them. Note that the typical instructions does not state the usage of the cdkey at any point.

I’d like the point out that no monthly royalties have ever been paid if you want to host your own server. Optionally you could rent one, and pay the 3rd party whatever they think their bandwidth is worth.
