ETQW: Multiplayer Dual Objective maps???

(mitchelljd) #1

I am a longtime Splash Damage fan. ID also. Love RTCW, RTCW:ET and can’t wait for the new ETQW.

One thing i am very concerned for is in multiplayer play, Having maps where both teams play offense and defense. ie Dual objectives.

Where one side will have to defend something while needing to attack the other team and strike an objective to win.

good maps for example RTCW or ET: Marketgarden.

really hope for this.

Mitch

Yea, I hope they do this as well. I’ve been a fan of Splash Damage since q3f, I was totally bummed when I heard they delayed the release but I know that it will be worth it.

I’ve never been that hot on dual objective maps tbh. The problem is that those maps tend to go on forever if the teams are equal.

(Rhoades) #4

which makes it intense and fun sometimes, and victory all the more satisfying.

(jimb0) #5

Personally, I hope not. BF2 had enough of musical chairs gameplay to make matches really annoying sometimes. Intensified battle on specific spots is what ET was about, and I hope that’s what ETQW is.

From my completely uninformed point of view, I think that something like dual objective would be implemented on a map-trigger scale and not on a gamestyle/engine scale. What I mean by this is that it’s probably possible that custom map creators will be able to create maps with triggers that assign victory to either team, instead of just having a trigger for one team and a timelimit for the other. I’m not sure if this is already possible in Wolf ET or not but I imagine it is. (I’m sure someone can post informative information on the matter)

So what I mean to say is that even if QW doesn’t ship with dual objectives maps doesn’t mean that they’re impossible to create. It will probably be up to custom map creators to handle. However, the popularity of such maps is still questionable, especially in league play.

(Hakuryu) #7

There is a custom ET map that has two objectives, whichever side steals and escapes with theirs wins.

I don’t like these types of maps much. In competition they might be cool, but in pubs they are either super-short because one team has no defense, or just team deathmatch because people find plenty of fighting in an area and forget all about the objectives.

A relatively straight forward objective structure is much more interesting simply becuase everyone can find their way to the contested area easily. You don’t have any boring waits (if your defense and nobody is trying to steal your objective), or long runs from area to area trying to find where the action is.

I believe the map baserace is a dual objective map. Both teams have to get to the other team’s base and get materials and bring those back to their base. I believe its the first teams that gets everything constructed wins.

(Fitzsimmons) #9

Now that you mention it I remember playing a 3v3 “CTF” map where each team tried to steal three boxes of gold from the opponent. So there’s your answer mitchelljd, it’ll probably be supported, but not necessarily out of the box.

(B0rsuk) #10

I hope there are no double objective maps. It often leads to both teams camping. Ok, so in Wolf:ET Axis can afford to camp all the time, but they have entire attacking allied team to stop. No boredom.

I played some dual objective games/mods, and it always leads to one class being bored by definition. It was engineer in Q3F, Gorge in NS, Granger in Tremulous.
You NEVER want to be near a bored engineer, trust me.

(carnage) #11

duel objective maps are ok as long as both teams objetives dont put the teams at such oods they pretty much have to split into two parts to stand a chance. maps like baserace where the objectives are pretty localised is a good one. or mp_destruction in rtcw was another good one since both teams are going head on but both on attack making very intense fighting

(Wils) #12

We don’t have dual objective maps, but there are secondary objectives in the maps for the defending team to go out and ‘attack’. They won’t win you the game, but they do impair the other team’s progress

(BrightSoul) #13

More than dual objective maps, I hope they put 6 maps with the GDF attacking, and 6 maps with the GDF defending. In W:ET I always play allied side because I find more intriguing completing objectives over killing people. If there was no prevalence of attacking/defending maps, I would have played more of the other faction.

Or, even better, I’d like to play more maps with mixed and extended attacking/defending phases. ie. In Oasis, when the allied engineer plants the dynamite at the city wall or at the tank guns, the roles are switched: Allies defending, Axis attacking. That’s cool but, unfortunately, it lasts only for 30 seconds maximum.

(nUllSkillZ) #14

Ever played “V2 Factory”?
In this map roles are switched after some time if allies don’t manage to fullfill there objectives in this time.
Great idea for a map.
Unfortunately the only map that uses this idea.

If the scripting system of maps of ET:QW is similar to W:ET then there will be plenty of possibilities for mapmakers including dual objective maps.

(kamikazee) #15

If it is similar to Doom 3 script, it will be able to do what W:ET could do in an easier way and more.

(HellToupee) #16

one of my fav maps for RTCW was depot which was duel objective, wasnt so great for competition matches tho due to the duel attack and defend requirement.

(DarkangelUK) #17

2 best RTCW maps ever, Bridge and Wizerness… excellent dual objective maps. I remember having a 4hr marathon session of bridge on the RTCWCentral server with all forum regulars. Probably the most fun game i ever had on RTCW.

(DG) #18

I dont think they work well at all on rotations but dual objective maps can work very well on large, dedicated servers. I’ve had some great fun with RTCW pubbing on Depot, Market Garden and bk_forest_b1, but only when the server runs the one map exclusively (OK, RTCW depot was fun early on but it wasnt very long before it turned into a hog that took longer than the total of the other maps on rotation).

They’re not for everyone and tbh only for me on occasion but I wouldnt write them off, Jolt ran a Market Garden server that by itself kept a couple of hundred people playing RTCW intensively for years. Good territory for a patch addition or custom mapper perhaps.

(SCDS_reyalP) #19

I agree with DG.

I don’t think dual objective in RTCW/ET ultimately worked out quite as well as normal SW, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t provide many hours of fun. Especially on large servers where you could join up and feel like you really were in an endless war.

The other thing about dual objective is that you can’t really use it in stopwatch.

(carnage) #20

The other thing about dual objective is that you can’t really use it in stopwatch.

not all duel objective maps have a unlimited time limit. like mp_destruction itf there is no winner by the end of the map then the leading team is given the win. this can also make it very intense last few seconds as both teams make a mad dash to get the critical point above the enemy. for stopwatch you could use the rules

if one team wins both rounds they win the point for that map
if one team wins one round then the other wins in a shorter time the next round they have the point
if one team wins then the other teams wins but by reaching the same time limit then the match is a draw
