ETQW Linux & PB

(Jimbo99) #1

I can’t seem to stay in the game for more than a few minutes before punkbuster kicks me telling me that it can’t update me to the pb of the server.

This is a clean install of ETQW under Linux. I installed it just today. I have been playing the original ET for years and have no problems getting PB to update.

In console–and for goodness sake who thought of ctrl+alt+to bring up the console--it states that punkbuster can't be updated and then that's it. If I start the game and then immediately go to play on line then do the ctrl+alt+ I can see that punkbuster is trying to update itself. It just fails.

I looked at the punkbuster files in my home folder and they are fine with all permissions set properly.

Splashdamage/Evenblance, what are you doing? You have 3-4 years experience in the Linux world, why can’t you get it working properly the first time out the gate?

It’s been that way since Doom 3, set com_allowConsole to 1 if you only want to press “~” to open the console.

What’s it got to do with Splash Damage? Play on non-PB servers… does PB actually do anything anyway?

have you tried a manual update from Evenbalance ?

What does splashdamage have to do with it?

First is is splashdamage’s game. They created it. Second, they got into the agreement with Evenbalance. It is their choice to enter that relationship. Third it is not my, me the customer, responsibility to resolve their issue. They sold the game with the intent of having Linux users play it. It was a selling point for them. Fourth, it is totally their responsibility to come up with a fix to resolve the issue and/or to provide adequate support to get it up and running properly. It is not my job to chase down which organization is responsible. They created it. It is their responsibility.

With that said, they need to respond to the Linux user base and explain why they are being so neglectful. I hope they don’t act this way to their children, nor that they allow their children to see that they are neglecting the customers that paid them money to play the game.

As for whether I did the manual update. I did as best i could to go to their site and download the files and put them in the appropriate place but it doesn’t resolve the issue.

It really makes no sense to create a game that is intended for online use and then release a client for it that doesn’t play on line.

Actually, I’m pretty sure the linux client is an unsupported gift from id to you. If you want support, you need to use windows.

It was a selling point for them.

Would you care to point out where the linux client was advertised ?

Fourth, it is totally their responsibility to come up with a fix to resolve the issue and/or to provide adequate support to get it up and running properly.

See above. You choose to use a free, unsupported client. The only thing you bought was the windows version.

As for whether I did the manual update. I did as best i could to go to their site and download the files and put them in the appropriate place but it doesn’t resolve the issue.

pbsetup exists for linux, and the last time I used it worked just fine.

True, officially there is no linux support. It’s an awesome gift from id. This is also why there is no mention of linux on the game’s box (at least not on my limited / normal editions).
According to activision the console isn’t supported either.

Anyway, I suggest searching the Community Forums - it has much more users than the SD.com forums. A lot of linux users do not have this problem, they may know how to help you.

Try update punkbuster manually. Download and copy pbsetup.run from http://punkbuster.com to /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/pb. Run as root ./pbsetup.run in console. Add game and gamepath (/usr/local/games/enemy-territory) and press button Check for Updates. Punkbuster updates globally - for all users. Before start game delete punkbuster user setting from /home/user/.etwolf/pb.[/i]
