ETQW Blast from the Past: DomMafia’s Open Beta Interview

With Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars turning five this week, we thought it’d be fun to dig up a few goodies from ETQW’s early days. Enter DomMafia’s Open Beta interview. The slightly older gentlemen and women among you will remember that QUAKE Wars had an extensive beta phase - first a seekrit Closed Beta, and then an Open Beta with some 60,000 participants. During the Open Beta, Dommafia quickly climbed to the very top of the leaderboards and became one of the most famous faces of the QUAKE Wars community.

In this interview originally conducted way back in September 2007, Dommafia shared his experiences during the Open Beta along with plenty of advice for new players looking to enter the world of Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. Time machine, begin!

I was completely useless. I hardly fired a shot. Complete tourist mode. I was just completely engrossed in the spectacle enveloping around me.

The open beta led me to join the GamersNation clan which eventually led to getting sponsored in TCM and going to Holland to compete at the CDC4 LAN in which didn’t end well for me but had awesome time in Amsterdam afterwards, all thanks to ET:QW!

Also, defibrillator boxing during warm, hell yeah!

Dom! Long time no see man!

And contrary to popular believe, the game wasn’t released on the 3rd of October. We Euros got it a week earlier  .

Hope to see you on the next one funky

Is anyone playing Borderlands 2? I’m having a lot of fun there… Let me know so we can play for a bit.

I’m playing BL2 atm, already done Zer0 and solo’d Terra  Currently doing Maya playthrough. My steams in my sig.

(amazinglarry) #10

Damn it, I miss my ‘prime’ of FPS’s… The full weekends of RtCW, ET and QW feels so long ago, and I can feel my skill dulling with each passing day…

BL2 hasn’t really interested me (and I still haven’t got past level 12 on the first one)… I’m actually playing System Shock 2 for the first time right now, thanks to the new unofficial patch.

Hmm, I never got to play the beta unfortunately. I did play the demo though. 40 hours in 1 week. And then I bought the game

I remember the old, old beta, not sure if we’re still suck under NDA from that era? Things changed a lot between then and the open beta. On my first outing I kept trying to heal a teammates with a stroyant needle.

(Seanza) #13

Old, old beta as in the one where stroyent cells replenished grenades?

(.Chris.) #14

That was in public beta 1 with Sewer. Thinking back to that, how did that not get picked up during private beta, now it seems such an obvious mistake to include in the game.

(Humate) #15

Possibly because volc is the map where medcrate nade spam is used fair a bit, so the idea of having replenished nades seems fair /cough

(DarkangelUK) #16

Old, old beta where you could climb into turrets and control them.

Yes it was, the whole dogfighting community : )

We had a crazy run devised on that valley!

(light_sh4v0r) #18

Hmm, dogfights, speaking of a blast from the past.
I still remember putting hours of practice in with Murka where he kept beating me, and then when I faced him in a match I had an easy victory. Still think he let me win
