The notion of “…just release it and let us judge for ourselves…” is naive. The company is protecting their reputation and integrity by not releasing a game they believe to be inferior and flawed. I think that is something commendable. I respect iD/Activision for not releasing a flawed product just to make a few bucks. That they continued to support the development of the MP aspect and then release it for free just adds to my view of the companies.
Think about it. If they released a crap version of the SP game, you would have alot of people who would end up disliking the company for it. They would be more skeptical about buying another product from the company because they dont’ want to throw good money after bad.
iD/Activision also stated that they did this to prevent harm to the Wolfenstein franchise. That means they intend to continue developing products in the franchise. It is my opinion that the development of ET was continued for just this purpose. To demonstrate that they are serious about the franchise and to keep the name in the gaming-public eye. They didn’t want ET to be viewed as another Duke Nukem Forever. I strongly believe that there will be another installment in the Wolfenstein franchise and I would not be the least bit surprised that it built upon the Doom3 game engine.
