ET server with custom maps unstable...

Hi,

I’ve put a few custom maps on our server (Caen, Supply Depot and tc_base) - not in a campaign file, but just there for loading if we feel like it.
Changed the server config to allow web downloads to speed up installation times for players that dont have the maps installed already.

However, with web downloads enabled the server seems to crash all the time - turned web downloads off and things seem to be OK.
I’m struggling to think of another server with custom maps that I play on that has web downloads turned on…

Without custom maps (and of course therefore the need for web downloads) the server has been bang on stable for months.

Any thoughts on the matter anyone?

Are you using disconnected mode downloads?

I’ve got 2 customs servers running and they’re fine ( disconnected downloads, http/ftp redirects ). Of course, they’re also using ET Pro ( 2.0.7 ATM ) as well - and if you’re not, well… ummm… upgrade? :slight_smile:

no i wasnt using disconnected dl/s, am using latest etpro though.

If your server is running on Win32, there’s a severe engine bug with redirected downloads that make the server crashtastic. Using disconnected downloads should work around it, and the newest etpro has a workaround for non-disconnected downloads.

Rain: Interesting. I always thought that the download bug could not be fixed in the game code, because (as you say) it’s a function that’s built into the engine code. Could you shed some light on how you did it?

We work around it by patching the engine code in memory. It’s a really nasty way to do it, but since the Win32 server is nearly unusable otherwise…

EEEEUUGH! BLEH! Nasty indeed… :slight_smile:

But since you’ve gone that route: do you think it’s possible to fix the “Server disconnected for unknown reason” bug in the same way? As far as I can tell, this is caused by the server sending incorrect disconnect codes (or not sending them at all). I don’t have access to the engine code, however, so this is pure conjecture. But fixing this bug would really help to clear up a lot of confusion with players (and admins as well!).

We already did fix the “Server disconnected for unknown reason” bug the same way. :banana: :banana: :banana:

We’re going to have a bugfix release out pretty soon, and then we’ll finally get a changelog up so everyone can see the madness that went into this release.
