ET server lag issues.

I looked through the site and didnt see a post exactly like this one so I thought I’d post it. If it is and I overlooked it please direct me to it and delete this post.

We run an ET server running Jmod 1.5 it is a dedicated box out of Dallas and I usually get a ping somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20. However, about every hour or so there is a HUGE lag spike game wide, but NOT server wide. There is a Q4 server ALSO running on the same box which does not lag at all. We tested this theory I waited on the ET server until there was a lag spike and when one came around there was no lag spike on the Q4 server. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

If you can find out if anything shows up in the et server console (or logs) when these lags happen, that might help. Also, look for other scheduled jobs which match the timing (the fact this doesn’t seem to affect other games on the same box doesn’t completely rule out the possibility that some external program is causing it).

If you can check CPU, disk and swap activity when the lags happen, that could also give you a clue. If you are not sure how to do this, tell us what OS the server is running, and what type of access you have to it.

packet loss? RAM usage? CPU load? ethernet port bandwidth? TCP receive window size? Linux? Windows? etc?

could be dns lookups. the engine doesnt do nonblocking dns.
