ET server crashes

(Stee) #1

ET’s a great games and I don’t have many major problems with it, but the one thats annoying me most is servers crashing. This seems to be a regular occurence on every server I’ve played on and I’ve played on quite a few. The test also had this problem but I assumed it would be sorted for the final version, this isn’t much use for clan matches as you never know if it will crash or not. I just wondered If there’s any plans to do anyhting about this or are the servers setup wrong? I’ve been on Jolt, Blueyonder, and game.net servers today and they’ve all crashed at least once, It’s still a great game tho.

yeah my server’s going down a couple of times a day. its basically (imo anyway) up to server admins and SD to help each other try and get it sorted.

my server is FAR more stable that test btw, that was going down every other map change :frowning:

My server, Austin ET Unlimited, crashes about once a day. :banghead:

Anything we can do as server operators to help you guys troubleshoot this problem?

(ND80) #4

I’m having the same problem on all my ET servers.

(Chiller) #5

Same for me as well. Kinda annoying …

(Argh) #6

Its not only annoying its ruining the game. Since the test i have had the server crashing all over the place. Ofcourse i tried all the suggested settings and some did improve it. But in the end with the release of the full version the problems has not been solved.

32 player servers is quite unstable and if you dare going above that well i always make sure i am just a feet from the server  (I know it isnt supported above 32 i just love the rush of 48 players on the beach hehe)

I have tried the server on different machines with different specs and that doesnt make much difference so i am sorry but it looks very much like a software problem which wont be solved by adding up hunkmeg size.

And to get back to my opening sentence. SD if you want this game to be played please take us server admins serious as i aint gonna treat this server as a baby which have to be looked after every hour, or getting my head shot off by the players for maintaining in their eyes a crash server which ate up their XP.

And yes thanks for the game it has been awsome playing it

I saw the error when my crashed finally:

“MSG OVERFLOW FOR YOUR DEAD”

It might have been “you’re”

Win32 System running Win2000… 18-20 clients
AMD Athlon 1700 XP PRocessor, 1 Gig of Ram on a t1 line

(Argh) #8

I think that is caused by disconnected clients and are sure reason in the test to finally crash the server, however in the final these msg still apear but with my server doesnt seem to crash it only lag it when it happens to several ppl at once.

(Cain) #9

Ofcourse i tried all the suggested settings and some did improve it.

Can you re-state those here for us please?? I’m not aware of any suggested settings to decrease the crashing.

Thanks !!

our server crashes once every 3 hours on average… its a pain inthe ass. ps its [FuN] 4 ever more 212.137.70.5:25555… tried it with pb on and pb off but still falls over… any suggestions on how to make it stable.

(Migraine) #12

This is odd… my server has only crashed once since the full ET came out.

Its a Linux Debian 3.0 System, p3-600, 256MB ram, running on a HP Netserver Lpr system.

You guys all running windows, or any linux servers also had crashes?

Heres the output from my single crash:

ours run win 2k server

(digibob) #14

A patch is being tested for the Msg overflowed causes servers to crash issue.

(ND80) #15

All of my servers (7 ET) are run on linux boxes and have crashed multiple times. I do find howerver that the one I run in stopwatch mode is much more stable than the 6 campaign mode servers.

(Chiller) #16

Mine runs under W2K. It is not an OS problem as I have run various game servers online for the past 4 years using NT/W2K and have never had the instability that ET exhibits. This particular machine I use now has never had any problems running the following servrers… RTCW, SoF2, Quake1, Q2,Q3, SSSE, CS, Tribes, Tribes2, MoHAA, AvP2.

(phenotype) #17

I too have been experiencing frequent server crashes. It would only stay up for 1-4 hours. However, last night I fired up the server (following a crash) right before I went to sleep. I did not use rcon at all to access it.

It was still going string this morning. I checked it with rcon and within minutes it crashed. While this does not prove anything, yet. It leads me to wonder if the crashes I am having aren’t rcon related. I have started the server again, and plan to access it only from the console all day.

We shall see. Hopefully this will provide Splash Damage with some info for debugging…

Thanks for ET! It rocks!

([fun]scott) #18

well i think this one is leading you down the garden path… i stopped the service then started it again adn didnt touch rcon. and it will fall over garanteed within 3 hours. (this is on a dual 1.4ghz with 2gb ram adn 100mb/s conn) and all other servers (5 of them) split over another server running normal wolf last for weeks on end with rcon beeing heavlily used.

Thank you…

To the rest of you, have you considered lowering the total number of clients your system can accept? Just a thought…
