ET Server Crash Reason: Overflow

(ZyD) #1

Ive been trying to host ET servers for several days now but they crash like 5-10 times a day because of overflow.

I noticed that RTCW had a fix 1.4 where it says that overflow crashes at long msg was fixed. Is this fixed in ET ?

It seems like only Windows servers has this error. ive seen several linux servers running fine without crashes.

im currently trying to host one but was going to set up alot more.

But now i wont because of the crashes so wont before its fixed.

i get the error no matter how big the server is (20 players | 32 players | 46 players | 64 players)

ive tried everything.

Does anyone know how to fix this or is this the same problem that RTCW had and fixed in a fix patch ? Maybe they should make a server fix patch for ET

A patch to fix this issue is under testing, please be patient.

Linux servers definately do NOT run fine. They crash just as much, if not more. I’ve seen the message overflow scroll my console for like a minute straight. In addition to that, we get random lock ups where the process is still active but its totally dead. We get allocation failures and seg faults. This server release reminds of me BF1942 1.0

Will there be something like an announcement mailing list for server admins?

(Chiller) #5

I have no doubt the issue will be resolved by SD. They have spent way too much time to let something like this continue. Just give them time to sort it out. It is still one hellava game. Besides, you can always ask for a refund.

Ashke

I completely sympathise with your statement:

‘we get random lock ups where the process is still active but its totally dead’

We get that error too on Win2k based systems. The game dies but both the service and process are still active. I considered that it might actually be a running process without any map loaded (watchdog gave me that idea) so have ran the server manually (at the cli) but to no avail. It just crashes the server console without any error visible (or too quick). The logs record a simple shutdown message.

As my esteemed collague stated elsewhere in these forums we have tried disabling PB (the AUTH process is slow but does get there), reducing player numbers, painting the server bright green, voodoo, witchcraft and various other illicit remedies in the hope ‘it might fix it’. The illicit remedies did nothing for the servers but did allow us to play at least two maps in what appeared to be glorious 3D and the Martians beat the Edible Keyboards 2-0. As you can see we have tried everything to try to fix the problem but I feel it is out of our control. It was said in IRC and on here that a server patch is on the way.

My only real concern is that I had these problems with the original test and simply gave up trying to keep the servers alive. My gut reaction today is that input ‘IS’ being taken from these forums as some great ideas are coming to light. I think we will see a patch in the near future.

We live in hope, as its a damned fine game.

Yeh Ashke, I get the lockup issue on both my servers too. Each one crashes about once every 24 to 36 hours. Servers are 14 players and full most of the time. Don’t seem to having the overflow problem though. Also Linux machines btw.

Anyways, full version seems a bit more stable than the test version concerning Linux server, but I do hope they release a patch soon

I have been running a server since the test release and that crashed as well as the full version. It only crashes when I don’t have PB enabled.
With PB enabled I have seen no crashes…

The msg overflow is usually related to a client number, could it be that that client is not responding due to lag or something and when the buffer for that client gets full it crashes?? I know PB kicks clients that are not respoding…

The GUI interface for enabling/disabling PB is also a bit funny, yesterday I disabled PB in the GUI and started the server. PB was still running when server was up so I had to type PB_SV_DISABLE and restart.

My Linux public server worked very fine for a few days, from sundays I had some crash :frowning:

in consol the error is:

ERROR: Info_SetValueForKey: oversize infostring

----- Server Shutdown -----
Sending heartbeat to etmaster.idsoftware.com
==== ShutdownGame ====
Sys_Error: recursive error ‘Info_SetValueForKey: oversize infostring’ after: Info_SetValueForKey: oversize infostring

and the ET shutdown :frowning: :frowning:

This isn’t a PB problem (I tried to disable PB)

I start ET, no error message in consol, when a players connect, in consol appear this message every 3 second: Info string length exceeded

If a players disconnect this message continues every 3 second :frowning:

Can you help me, please?

Thanks in advance

I have been running a test ET server on linux for several days now, granted… I have reset it a few times, to change public info, etc. But other than that, no crashs. Servers been so busy, that its been tough finding an opportunity to restart without pissing anyone off!

Using out of box configs, just setting my own hostname & passwords.

I have been running 3 RTCW:ET linux servers and they are almost 24/7 full of users

im planning to create a 4º server, but i am having alot of problems regarding server stability

i have 2 of the servers set for 24 users max, and a 3rd set for 16 users max.

my machine is using a 100 Mbps connection and it has dual cpu p4 1,5 Ghz and 1 gb of ram, its going ok, but each day, at least one of the ET servers gets stonned, or weird, one of the CPU’s usage grows to 100% the process doesnt drop, it remains active, yet, the server goes offline and i have to kill the process and restart it to have my server back online again.

it usually happens more often on the Campaign server, it happened once on the Objective server tho, but in The campaign server it does happens at least once per day.
i cheked and overcheked everything again and again, the servers gets stoned in the middle of any match randomly not in any map load or anything, u are playing well, no problems and suddenly it puff’s , it happens in a random basis.

i am really in need of that patch u guys are talking about, cuz this is really anoying me and the users, one thing that i already noticed is, the more usage the server has, the more often the crashes will happen.

thanks and please splash damage guys, solve this as soon as possible.

thank you for ur attention m8’s
