ET reboots my PC

(Entreri) #1

This a plea for help!

I start up ET as usual, but when I log into a server the screen goes blue for a split second, and the PC reboots. Usualy it only occured when I logged into certain servers, but lately it happens all the time. Sometimes it happens in the limbo menu, sometimes I can play for up to 5 minutes before it happens.

I have tried the following without result:
Installed XP service pack 1&2
I uninstalled my Catalyst 4.10 and installed first 4,9 then 4,8.
I’ve flashed BIOS ( on the motherboard)
I’ve reinstalled ET from CD.
Then I formatted my harddisk, reinstalled XP and tried once more, without XP SP 1&2 and only Catalyst 4.8.
The CPU temperature is only 42 degrees,so it can’t be that either. I also have a 480W Antec PSU, should be enough. It only happens in ET, not in neither Wolfenstein, Splinter Cell, Doom3 or Hitman3. I also tried to host my own game, and that went smoothly. I played tree maps (all by my self, which was pretty f**** boring) without any trouble at all.

I have run the newest Spy bot and newest Ad Aware. I have also run full virus scan with both Norton Antivirus and online scanning with McAffee and Trend Micro. I have taken out all redundant hardware ( PCI firewire, PCI usb2, one cd rom and the wireless networkcard), and i still have a big problem! Screen goes blue for a split second, and the PC reboots.

This is the thrd forum i post in. You guys are my last hope. I don’t know what else to do, maybe I’ll start collecting stamps instead

I have AMD XP 2800
Radeon 9800 pro 256MB
1024 RAM
I connect through a wireless router.

And yeah, I have version 1.02 and the newes ET pro

ATI Drivers?.

PS: Wireless router - quite adventurous for gaming. Do you get a stable ping with it?

(Entreri) #3

Well, I have used the 4.8 drivers for a long time without any problems. Do you think I should go even lower?

I get a pretty decent ping with my wireless router. It’s the cabel connection that sucks! Should be 750, but get 30 max when i download stuff. (It was like that before I got the wireless router)

(nUllSkillZ) #4

Are you able to host a local server?

May be there’s something wrong with the installaation file.

What have you changed in the meantime?

(eq-Shrike) #5

The wireless router shouldn’t be a problem - I connect via a Dlink 604+ and get very steady pings (around 30-50) on BT ADSL

Afaik the driver problem started with the 4.1 version: http://www.gamingforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=154575.

(Entreri) #7

Well, I uninstalled catalyst 4.6 and installed 3.9. Samething. The PC still reboots when i log into another server. I’ve swapped the PCI cards around, and the RAM to, but nothing seems to work. I’ve also run DiskDiag with no errors.

Do I really have to buy battlefield now?

(chr0nicles) #8

Well my m8 had the same problem,

The first thing i tried was running memtest.

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Since you can host a local server without any problems this could be PB/ATI related
so update pb manually, following the instructions @ http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-et.php

After that follow the next top instructions @

http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=faq-et.php

And this actually solved the problem, hope it works for you too.

BUT:

Since you got a BLUE screen and then rebooting, its a hardware driver conflict
you could make a dump of the bluescreen ( sorry don’t have the instructions )
to check which driver is in conflict.

What soundcard do you use?

Take care

I also heard that the Windows XP DEP (Data Execution Prevention, new with SP2) in conjunction with ATI Drivers/AI and/or PB can cause trouble. Some fixed that by disabling DEP, but nobody seems to be sure about the precise reason for the problems.

(chr0nicles) #10

I also heard that the Windows XP DEP

His CPU “Athlon XP” Doesn’t support this fuction, but it never hurts to disable it anyway  since SP2 does support it partly software based.

chr0nicles: I’ve run memtest for 2 hours now without any errors at all. I also followed the other steps, but nothing works.

I installed the 4.12 beta drivers, and I finally got an error message for the first time. Before the screen has just turned blue, then shut down. This is the error message.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I have a WD Raptor SATA disk and a WD Caviar SATA disk. Has the “si3112r.sys” thingy anything to do with the silicon image SATA drivers??

I want to thank everybody for fast answers. Great work guys!

That’s correct, download the latest drivers and manually update them in XP.

From the original SiS homepage http://www.sis.com

Windows XP
http://driver3.sis.com/raid/raid301.zip

Since you haven’t told us your motherboard manufacturer
i can only tell you to also try the latest SATA/RAID drivers from your motherboard manufacturer website probably http://www.asus.com

This should fix it.

Take Care

Seems like it worked.I installed the newest SATA RAID drivers for my Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, and I played three maps of ET today without any problems at all (except for the damn panzers)
Well, thanks heaps to those who answered my prayers.

“(except for the damn panzers)”
Lol , panzerfaust llamas
Make your mod with lower panzerfaust radius and host it

Nice that it worked

Take care
