ET:QW Uses Demonware

Steve Pearce: I think we can safely say that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which has been announced, will be using Demonware technology, and we are busy integrating (and have been for some time) into a number of our other franchises. It’s no surprise, I imagine, that Call of Duty will be using Demonware technology. I think I’m going to have to stop there.

Activision has utilized DemonWare’s technologies in its games since 2005, most recently in its best-selling title Call of Duty® 3. DemonWare has two main products – DemonWare’s Matchmaking+, which provides advanced community services for multiplayer gaming, including player matching, user profiling and gaming statistics across current-and next-gen consoles and PCs; and DemonWare’s State Engine, a cross-platform network engine that ensures that console-to-console communications are secure and as lag-free as possible.

seems to answer a lot of questions about server stuff, lobbies, stats etc. The Lobby Advertising and DNA may give some people a bit of apprehension, especially the Lobby Advertising. That I can deal with, it’s the DNA that kinda bothers me.

"DNA allows the capture of progressive data generated by the title’s gameplay. This allows for comprehensive reporting on trends and patterns in the game, useful for game-tuning and future game development:

  • Player -

    • User patterns
    • Character progression
    • Popularity of game objects "

that approach would seem to dumb the game down for me, pushing it towards the easiest way, or am I reading too much into this ?

The way I read it, DNA (if used properly) may be an effective tool in polishing the game balance.

What’s more interesting, will multiplatform nature of Demonware allow console users to play against PC users?

Fun times ahead for PC users if this is true.

I don’t see why it would mean anything like that. Multi-platform networking code is child’s play compared to overcoming the real differences between consoles and PCs.

I don’t really understand how a .doc that reports how players move around(for example) could ‘dumb down’ a game :?. I read the same as figvam, seems to be a tool to help balance / tweak the game.

You could research a specific player/players and find out how they act? I dunno… :moo:
