ET:QW Dual Threaded?

(SniperSteve) #1

Will ET:QW be dual threaded to take advangtage of both cores in a 2X CPU?
(like my AMD 64 2X 3800)
As far as I know RtCW:ET wasn’t.

There are a few games coming out soon that will support it, UT2007 being the most well known.

There is a patch for Quake4 which is in beta AFAIK so I guess it’s safe to assume ET:QW will take advantage of dual and/or multi-core CPU’s

BTW, there is no RTCW:ET

According to SD people, true.
However, ID Software says RTCW:ET

Go for their throats, SD ! Avenge the blasphemy !

According to a recent interview with Carmack threading for dual core processors is going to be tough for any game developer. Sure you will start seeing patches for some games, but they are really being released to get the dual cores performance up to what a single core would do.

I’ll try to get the link but Carmack goes on to say that dual core gaming might take some time to impliment and its going to be worse for consoles and their multi core setups.

Doom3 engine, where ET:QW is based on is single threaded. But If Quake4 is in beta dualcore engine, there is a big change that SD will release a dual threaded version. Maybe not at teh release, but i think a patch would be possible yes. It wouldnt be too hard to change it to dual thread if its already done on anothe rgame with teh same engine, ofcourse i can be wrong… But I would hope it as my next pc will be dualcore too.

When SMP was introduced, there was much talk from some developers of how painful it would be to implement and that we wouldn’t see a real benefit for years to come and with new engines. That however is not the case, at least with the company that has been the leader in computer gaming graphics tecnology, id software. Always one to aim for the most optimized engine possible, their SMP patch does wonders with 50% improvements and is a must download for every dual core owner out there, AMD or Intel. If this isn’t enough we also have word from Tim that in the 1.1 update to Quake 4 we will see even more SMP improvements and fixes, so we will definitely be testing that out.
