ET:QW a Popularity question

fixed offline to “out of game”…

Cash $ is sadly the driving force for a lot of things, but I’m sure the families of SD employees are happy that they bring a check home each month to feed them. I don’t mind doling out $60 for the game, and an extra $5-10 bucks / year to keep the game running correctly. Hell, people spend $20 a month on RPGs. Something truly wrong with that ($240 a year!)

I think that this game will do really well, asymmetric teams are a huge plus. Im so bored of all these games that have only humans and humans fighting against each other with no difference in which side you play.

In fact I believe that this game will be the next “big thing” in FPS gaming after the CS. Why? Three reasons:

  1. Makers of ET can create a game that is both easy to learn, but hard to master, a game that you can play years without getting bored, asymmetric sides helps this a lot. I dont think that there are too many things to learn in BF2 that would keep me interested, also they have nerfed some of the weapons I liked which is no fun.

  2. Graphics look amazing, but judging from interviews the game wont be too demanding on hardware, also they promise good netcode that is still absent from most of the FPS-games.

  3. It wont be released until it is ready. I can imagine that Battlefield 2 would be mega-popular today if EA would have delayed the release until the game was really ready for it, but it was not. Just after the release BF2 was close to CS:Source in player numbers but the patch fiasco that has followed the release has alienated lot of players from the game.

Now if ET:Quakewars is released with a good and solid server browser, and without any huge bugs, and therefore getting good release, everything is possible. I could do a big list of things that went wrong with the development of BF2, and gladly I dont see same mistakes happening here.

Hell, even if I would not have time to play this game, I would still buy atleast two copies just to support developers and publishers that really support their games and players. EA wont be stealing more of my money anytime soon. Actually what they are now doing with the Battlefield franchise disgusts me.
