ET Pro Internet Server Working - Can't connect LAN or WAN

(wizman88) #1

Ok, here’s the deal. I have two computers: One is for hosting the server (–Windows 98–) and the second is for going on the server so I can play with my mates (Windows XP Home Edition). Everything is working fine, the server shows up on the server list, people can connect etc. Now the problem is, when I connect through my LAN, it just keeps saying “Awaiting Challenge…” forever and ever, even though it says i’m connecting in my server console on the other computer. It works fine if I set it to the Dedicated LAN Server mode in the server.cfg file.

I also go through a router: Linksys - Model: NR041 and I am currently forwarding the ports for ET: 27950-28000. There’s another problem with this. Lets say that I want to host my server 24/7 on the Windows 98 computer. Well, if it shutsdown, I restart the computer and then it executes the server.cfg file on startup, but, when I restart the computer, my LAN IP changes from 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.x (x = 100-104 since I only have 4 ports). Once it changes, then I have to go into my router and change the DHCP and the port forwarding settings so it forwards to that particular IP address. Is there any way to make the LAN IP address stay permanent so I don’t always have to change/modify the router settings all the time? How come I can’t connect to my server through my LAN or WAN IP? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, I figured out why it wasn’t allowing me inside my server. I tried disabling Punkbuster and it let me in, so for some reason, its kicking me. Is there a punkbuster command so that it won’t kick me? I’m also still confused with my router settings. Thanks.

Yes, I had the same problem on my server when I tried to connect on LAN, it went on for ever ( never tried it on the internet ). When I disabled punkbuster I could log in. I would realy like to know why this problem occurs because I would like to have punkbuster enabled.

Try this:

PB_SV_LanMask [IP Subnet Mask]
This setting is used for Internet Servers that also have local LAN game clients connecting; it should be set to hold the subnet of the LAN; for example, if the LAN IP Addresses are 192.168.1.x, then set pb_sv_lanmask to 192.168.1

You should set your TCP/IP address to a static one and not use DHCP.

Simply open a dos box and use the command ‘IPCONFIG /ALL’ … note down all the important info (I.P address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers) … and then modify your network card TCP/IP properties to use static. Then do all your ET port forwarding to the static I.P address. MAKE SURE TO EXCLUDE THE STATIC I.P ADDRESS FROM DHCP. I have my 'server set to an I.P address of 192.168.1.101 and the router configured s that it dishes out I.P addresses from 102-110.

Let me know if you need any further help.

Thanks.

The server is set to static ip address ( 192.168.0.2 ) but not the client computer. I will first test with the pb_sv_lanmask, which I will set it to 192.168.0, and if that does not work I will give the client computer a static ip address.

The client computer should not need a static I.P address but I guess no harm in trying. As long as the ET ports are forwarded to the static server I.P then you should be ok.

Your buddies will obviously need to connect to the proper I.P address (i.e. not the 192.168.x.x) - have you tried connecting with your client via the ‘proper’ I.P address and the local address ?

Another trick to test the port is:

From a client open a DOS box and type:

‘telnet <I.P. address> <port number>’

This will test whether your client can see the open port. For example:
From your client type ‘telnet 192.168.0.2 27950’

Yes the Firewall is configured to forward port to the server, that is the computer with the static ip address, so that is no problem.

Should this been set in the server.cfg or punkbuster.cfg?

I edit pb_sv_lanmask to the punkbuster.cfg and now i can connect on my lan.

Ok, I finally got my static IP address working with my router!

I’m still having one trouble though with Punkbuster. I tried inputting that command (pb_sv_lanmask) into my punkbuster.cfg file like you said, but to no surprise, it still says “Awaiting Challenge…” while in the console it says “Punkbuster server: in client connecting”. Since my gateway is 192.168.1.1, I set it for both 192.168.1 and 192.168.1.1, but neither worked. Maybe I did something wrong? Also, that telnet command doesn’t work either. :bash:
