ET not responding

All of a sudden the game doesn’t start up anymore. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times with no success. One time it did start up, but I wasn’t online. But once I got online and I tried it again, it would just give me the same old black screen. I wait for a long time and nothing happens. The only way for me to exit the program is to ctrl+alt+del. Also in the little window that pops up before the game loads, i see a lot of stuff being followed by Check com_crashed. I hope someone can help so I can get back to my daily fragging. :???:

I’m running a decent system:
Athlon XP1800+
512 MB PC2700 RAM
KT400 Soyo Dragon Ultra PE
420w Turbolink PS
Windows XP Home

P.S. I’ve also been getting crashes during stage loads on different servers like some people here.

Dude, this is EXACTLY what just happened to me. And it JUST started today. I’m also on an athlon system, but it’s a home-built dual athlon mp 2000+. I had a problem installing the game when it first came out, because it kept freezing at 86%, then I downloaded it from a bittorrent site rather than any of the sites mentioned here, and for some reason it worked. I loved it for as long as it worked, but now it’s not anymore. Occasionally, if I give ET long enough (even though task manager says it’s not responding.) it’ll finally get to a menu I can use. But then I can’t join pretty much any servers, and the one time I successfully joined, I got booted for some Punkbuster error I couldn’t decipher. No, I don’t cheat.

Jeez, same problem here. Just today, Wolf ET and RTCW multiplayer no longer run on my machine. RTCW single player will still load, but the others won’t even load up!! I just get a gray screen and I have to go to taks managet to regain control of the computer.

Also running an Athlon 1800+ on an Abit KG7-R mobo.

This is very strange…

Add me to the list … This is most bizarre. I didn’t change anything on my system today, and all of a sudden ET won’t run.

I’ve uninstalled / reinstalled, re-installed video drivers, the works … nothing seems to help. Ran pbweb, didn’t help.

Reinstalled in a new directory and got things running, although enabling PB at the start took forever (I thought the system was hanging but it eventually came back). Fixed up my controls and joined a server, but the game hung after the map loaded. Restarted the game and I’m back to square one, nothing working.

Windows XP
Athlon 1 GHz
640 MB RAM
Geforce 3 TI 200 / Nvidia 44.03 drivers

Add me to the list too. It just happened right now and this is the second time it happened. It also happened to me 1 maybe 2 weeks ago. Eventually it came back, though I’m not sure why, and I was able to play again. This is pretty annoying and I am having the same problems as you guys (gray screen, nothing loading). Last time I think I may have erased one of the files in a directory to try and fix things, but I don’t think that actually fixed anything. I’m gonna try it again and see what happens.

If anyone can figure out what the deal is and how to make it stop from happeneing again please let us know.

I can also see it is getting errors in the console window that loads right away before switching video modes. I’d take a look at it or copy and paste it here, but I don’t know how to view it.

768 Mb RAM
Windows 2000
GeForce4 Ti4200

OK, I think I found where the problem is. The main thing appears to be in the etconfig.cfg file (located in etmain\profiles\YOURNAME\etconfig.cfg). If you simply delete this file everything appears to load as normal.

The problem is that you will lost all your settings and binds if you do this. So if you really want to play you can just delete the file and reset all the bindings and settings in the game.

I’m trying to find a way to do this without losing all the binds/settings. In my etconfig.cfg there are a bunch of settings at the end followed by ‘unsafe’ and I tried both deleting these settings, and just removing ‘unsafe’. There was no change when deleting the lines, but when removing ‘unsafe’ it reverted to my normal video mode, but still didn’t load things. Gonna look into it more.

I followed Punkbusters ET FAQ since I had a lot of crashes. A lot. And not only the game freeze with infinite sound loop, but freezes so hard that my USB optical mouse shut off.

I uninstalled NAV, Reinstalled ET, tweaked the settings like they suggested, and it ran fine with no crashes (other then the slight occasional one, which is normal heh).

Then I screwed up and reinstalled NAV. The install went screwy, now I can’t even uninstall or load NAV. And if course, ET went right back to major crashes. Now I have to wait until NAV get’s back to me so I can fix this stupid problem and get rid of NAV for good. Screw it, I’ll stick with AVG!

So if you run NAV, try uninstalling it.

yep, getting the same error as well, first i was getting the com_crashed error, so i reinstalled to another HDD, that fixed that but now when i try to enable PB i get frozen, doesn’t come out of freeze for me, left for an hour, came back, still looping sound, i too need to quit using Program Control thing.

Anyway, i really need to fix this, i have a clan scrim tonite.

yeah same problems here with the freezing and the looping and the hey hey,
i deleted the config in my profile to get it to actually start, (past the grey screen and the not loading)
im running a Pentium 4, 2.4…
hope some one figures it out real soon!
also it does it for my quake 3 :???:

I got the same problems too. I did delete the et.config file and it went fine up to the point when i enabled punkbuster. Then it froze again nad on the next start the problem was here again. :banghead: So i suppose punkbuster is to blame!!!

SteveHitler, the console thing you are referring to is the com_crashed error, happens in console, your etconfig.cfg deletion seems to fix that. :clap:

The gray screen appeary mostly when ET is trying to autoupdating during startup. Depending on your connection speed this can take from 10 seconds up to 1 minute. Just wait and if ET isn’t responding after, lets say, 3 minutes you maybe have a greater problem :-/.
You can disable autoupdating by changing cl_autoupdate to 0 within your etconfig.cfg-file(s):

seta cl_autoupdate "0"

Hmm, the game suddenly started to run normaly. And i didnt change anything or waited at the gray screen. I just played a game with punkbuster off. Then i turned it on and it went fine :clap:

Yeah, do this is you are getting a grey screen on startup, usually means you aren’t able to resolve the autoupdate server ips, and these requests can take a LONG time to timeout…

hey bob… just about to head to sleep here. but this grey screen madness is coming after this huge list of check com_crashed things… it just goes grey and sits there forever. time to crash myself now(sleep)… hopefully when i wake up, someone has a sure fix, cause i like my cfg as is… and i’m really lazy so deleting all the way would break my heart.

hey i’ll shutup here… decided to give it one go as i head for bed… ET fixed itself or something… saw all the crashed messages then ET actually loaded. Ran it a second time… no crashed messages.

ggs whoever fixed something somewhere.(i’m too lazy to have done anything)

i fixed it by deleting my profile and making a new one. works fine now for me.
