ET makes my comp restart, PLEASE HELP

(chizwiz) #1

When I first installed ET, everything was working perfectly. Then about a month and a half later (a few weeks ago) ET would restart my computer randomly during a map change. I didn’t change any drivers on my system or anything like that. It would only happen at a map change, like as soon as the screen with the map of Europe came up where it showed which levels had been won by which teams, and showed the picture of the map currently being loaded, blink there’s my RAM count! It was random… sometimes I could play 5 or 6 maps before it restarted, and sometimes it would restart on the first one. This would happen on 3 map servers as well as 6 map servers. I even tried deleting all downloaded pk3 files, reinstalling (3 times), updating video card drivers as well as Via 4-in-1 drivers.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s a resolution problem, like when it goes to the map loading screen, it momentarily changes res for some reason before loading up the set res. I have tried running in 1024x768 (desktop res) and even 800x600. I don’t know anything about programming, netcode, or stuff like that, so I am totally guessing here.

Also, I am certain that this restarting problem only occurs in ET as I have tested it in many other games, and just regular windows use. It only happens in ET…

I am running an Athlon 2100+, GF4 Ti4200, 768 MB RAM, Win2k. Any ideas, please let me know! Thank you in advance!

well,

if its not a failing power supply , its not likely a hardware issue <-- guess

if it ran fine for a month before issue started occuring, then youre gonnahave to think long and hard about any ANY program you may have installed or updated -

outside of that, there have been many posts of people who started having issues w/ ET after it had run fine for a month(s)

if your power supply is failing, it shld show up randomly , not app specific <-- nudder guess

Just try updating all your drivers for all your hardware and see how it goes, if it doesnt work then if you want to, re-format. I’m not saying this will fix it but something you have installed previously is affecting how the game is being played. If that all don’t work, then it could very well be your power supply. If you could give us a roundup of your hardware and Watts for your power supply we can tell you what you need as a minimum power supply unit (PSU).

Goto the game dir.

Right click the ET.exe

Select properties and goto the compatibility tab.

Tick the Run this program in compatibility mode for:

Select Windows 98 / Windows ME mode

The problem shold have been solved

It worked for me :stuck_out_tongue:

hope it helps

You had the same problem as me? Random restarts during map changes? If so, then I will definitely try what you suggested, if it worked for you. Thanks for the advice.

yeah exactly the same problem as you

Actually, you wanna know what’s funny? I tried what you suggested, except that I didn’t have that option on my executable file. I couldn’t find the compatibility thing anywhere.

But I am 99% sure I have fixed the problem: apparently my power cable for my box was going bad. I vaguely recall this happening about a year ago, and so all I did was replace the cable, and it all works great.

Thanks for the help everyone!

dont think win2k had a ‘run app in compatibility mode’ option, jes xp

glad you solved the issue

I’m glad you got your problem sorted but in my several years (in my previous post) as senior chief pc engineer (the cunt who sits in the corner and tells the monkeys how to do shit), I have never heard of a “kettle” lead “going bad”.
