ET losing settings?

Sometimes my ET config just forgets settings, like right now --as soon as i try to load it-- its locking up with grey screen in an off-center 800x600 res screen (normally 1024x768, and yeah r_mode is 6). It works fine if i swap out my etconfig.cfg.

It did it earlier today too, i checked etconfig.cfg and colorbits, texturebits and depthbits was sitting at 0. I set those in the autoexec, so this time it’s found something else to make it go fubar :frowning:

Yeah i could just reload the cfg, but i use completely different keys (YTUH), and figure putting the whole thing in the autoexec is a workaround, not the solution. BTW i have heard other people comment on ET losing settings, but not many.

I noticed a lot more writing on the flash of console I get before it loads fullscreen, tried setting logfile 1, but the logfile is empty :(. So I grabbed a shot using a screenshot grabber. BTW on this occasion ET did actually load, wether by fluke or the keypress for the screenshot I dunno.

That happens to me only after my computer (and ET) crashed (so ET wasn’t shutdown clearly). And it reverts only some screen settings (resulution, colordepth, etc.) to default values.

I always lose settings after a crash. Annoying but so infrequent its not a biggy.

I’m having the same problem, just started yesterday but is consistent whether it crashes or not.

yeah i still get settings being lost, usually dont see any indication of a crash either. yesterday i started playing and noticed bullet casings flying about everywhere, i’d always turned them off as it helps to get smoother gameplay on my fairly low end system.

Have the same problem when i crash, hope it gets fixed because it can get annoyning

i think i know a fix but haven’t tested it yet.

ET marks some vars with an unsafe/crashed status. All video related vars are marked unsafe at all times, in the event of the game crashing (or closing in a non-regular way), the game marks these variables as crashed and then sets them to the default values.

My guess is you could set the game to your likeing and then manually remove the “unsafe” from the vars using a program like wordpad (notepad makes the carriage return look weird).

NOTE: Changing any of these vars thru the GUI will re-add the “unsafe” to the var

Is it a file like a .cfg that can be opened in (as you say wordpad) and if so what about the possibility of just changing the attributes of the file to “read only” or does it need to be changed once in a while by regular ET playing ? Once you have the setting you definitely want finalised that is.

My ET never crashes - I always exit with F10 which I have bound to quit.
My shortcut include +exec ark.cfg which include r_mode 8, and even vid_restart, but ET INSISTS on reverting to r_mode 6 - it continuously writes and rewrites “set r_mode 6 unsafe” to my etplayer.cfg in the profile directory. No matter WHAT I try, I always have to just open the console after I connect to my server, and type /r_mode 8 then /vid_restart

and when you want to do some change, restart with a default config.cfg done by ET when not founding cfg file and do your test on it … Then do a diff-text with your customized read-only file and update it . my €0.02

  1. Create an autoexec.cfg. in your ETMAIN folder.

  2. Put all your settings/video/binds/etc into this file.

  3. AT THE TOP OF THE FILE add this line:

wait 500

  1. Save it and start ET.

ET will start up, chill for a few seconds, then load up all your autoexec.cfg settings.

If you set up your r_mode in your autoexec and use the wait command above, you’ll never need to reset your stuff again.

At least, that’s how I do it…

Try “seta r_mode 6”

And I also lose my vid settings if ET is not closed properly, so far it has been easy to just reset those few in the game system controls. I’m gonna try and fix it but its # 372 on my list.
