ET lags D:

(stealth6) #1

So for the first time since I’ve started playing this game I have a problem that I can’t solve and is really p*ssing me off.
Problem:
I get lag spikes every ±minute, with lagg spike I mean I get 999 ping for a few seconds and can’t move untill I stop pressing everything then it resolves itself and I can keep playing.
If I keep pressing a button(s) then it takes much longer to resolve but also does eventually, but after 10 seconds of my player jumping all over the place.

more info:
-I am running windows 7 64bit, before this I was running windows vista 64bit on the exact same machine, except there it worked without any problems
-I am on a wireless network, but the connectivity says good with 3 / 5 bars
-I had problems getting my wireless adapter to work (maybe cause?) it’s Linksys WMP54G and has no official drivers for Windows 7 afaik

Solutions tried:
-Run as administrator
-Compatibility mode XP SP3
-Update PB
-Use PB checker (says everything works fine)
-Trying a server without PB (problem persists)
-Checked Firewall settings and it allows both PB and ET
-unblocked every possible option in Firewall

This sums up the feeling I get when it happens:

Try to play it with a cable to test?

If the problem still persists at least u know it isn’t your wireless connection, and move from there.
I believe I had this problem asswell, and I believe it was a config error.

It had something to do with my screen resolution not matching the r_mode or something.
(I know u talkin about lag 999, but I just saying I had the same problem) Yes, I also run it on Windows 7 64-bit.

(I fixed it by adjusting these values in my config, but I still have to do /vid_restart a few times when my game starts up)

Got the same problems for over a year now.
I think it’s our wireless connection (we (my brother and I) got the exact same problems you’re having)

You have by any coincidence a BBox from Belgacom (I thought you were a Belgian) ?

(valkyr) #4

Well you’ve got the following suspects :

[ul]
[li]Enemy Territory
[/li][li]The wireless connection
[/li][li]The Internet connection
[/li][/ul]

As Ryan said, check your config first if you’ve tweaked it in any way and possibly changed a setting which could cause problems. Delete your profile and try with a fresh default profile.

Then I’d test the wireless connection first by using the ping command on the command prompt to a game-server’s IP address :

ping -t xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The ‘-t’ means to keep pinging until you press CTRL+C - run it for as long as it would take for you to lag in the game, then it’ll shows you the average time etc.

Look at the response times. Are there any >999ms?

Then check in-game.

Then use the ping command again to double-check.

This will tell you if it’s something game-related, or if it’s your (wireless) connection in general.

Repeat the above with a wired connection.

Try NetLimiter - it shows you which programs are using the network, and how much bandwidth they’re taking up. Start the game windowed and watch NetLimiter while you’re on the server and going 999. What does NetLimiter show? Anything else hogging the bandwidth?

Uhm…

That’s plenty ideas for now, and should tell you quite a lot already.

not sure about 7, but vista had a component that would poll for better connections if you used wireless KB or mouse, can’t remember how to disable

not sure if you have wireless KB, just a thought

(stealth6) #6

lol no wireless KB or mouse, I tried it once but I am on my computer too much, they were flat in no time and I don’t like sitting around waiting for it to recharge

And no I don’t have the BBox, I set up the wireless here 3 years ago I think, it was a low budget wifi system but I didn’t have any problems with it (well I did at a certain point start gettings lags, but this was solved by buying a better antenna for my card)

Anyway I’ll check out pinging and that program, but attaching my pc is not an option, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this in the first place

edit: tried the ping, every so many tries it says request timed out or like 1600ms response time, sometimes this happens after 10 good pings, other times 3 or 4 and sometimes it just says it twice in a row.

result:
Packets: Sent = 217, Received = 197, Lost = 20 (9% loss)
Response times: Minimum: 16ms, Maximum = 1642ms, Average = 41ms

edit2: netlimiter doesn’t work (doesn’t install) it says you need a version of windows 2000 or newer xD

Attaching it to wired is only for testing purposes…
To track down the problem.

Well that looks like it rules out anything ET-related, and probably points to your wireless connection. Almost 10% of the pings getting lost between your computer and the router is quite a lot… so it could be down to the fact that there’s no official drivers for Windows 7 (Vista drivers should work most of the time, but I wouldn’t rely on them).

I’d get another wireless dongle that definitely has drivers for Windows 7.

Edit: Actually, just thought - you could try pinging your router and seeing if you still get a high number of lost packets. That would definitely rule out your Internet connection. Try pinging 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.2.1 or whatever IP address your router has.

There’s a beta of version 3 on the site for Windows 7.

I had exactly the same problem on my Vista desktop using wireless connection.
I even tried another wireless laptop running XP and it also had the problem.

This program fixed it for me: http://codecase-de.software.informer.com/

Also try disabling the ‘Wireless Zero Config’ service as some people say that worked for them.

Another useful program is Pingplotter. Use that to monitor the pings (hops and latency) to a specified I.P
That way you can identify if a particular hop (i.e.routing) is at fault.

If I had to put money on the issue I would say wireless …

(stealth6) #10

ye it’s definitely something to do with the wireless. But I suspect something in windows 7 is blocking it or so, I dunno what could be causing it, still working on a solution.
Also instead of pingplotter you can just use the ms-dos cmd tracert (traceroute) does the same thing as you described.

(stealth6) #11

Seems to be solved now…
Bought a WMP600N, but that didn’t really help much (it actually made it much worse)
Bought a WRT160N, at first also didn’t help, flashed firmware and updated it to DD-WRT firmware.
Then I found out that the software from the WMP600N was interferring with the normal windows software, so I uninstalled all the software and drivers, downloaded the latest win7 64bit drivers form the linksys site, installed those and now it seems to be working well.
And so do all the other pc too
So looking good now, tried it out ingame and my ping is even more stable then it has ever been the lagometer shows almost 2 flat lines

(Gimpsta) #12

Glad you got it fixed !

:stroggtapir:

(stealth6) #13

yes, it is definitely fixed, been playing like all day  no lag and a lower ping then before
