ET Lag Problem

(H0m3skill3t) #1

Hey everyone, ive been having this problem with ET for quite some time now, and i cant figure out how to fix it. My problem is that my ping spikes anywhere from 70-999, and it is continuous and does not stop. I have tried phoning my isp and asking them what was going on, and they said that it is not them. I feel that this is correct because i ping ventrilo and COD fine, the only problem i have is ET. I have reset my modem, restarted my computer, ran a virus check, turned off my computer, and none of these things have done anything. I just recently have reformatted, and cleared everything off both by C and D drives. Once i tried to play et again after i had finished this, the problem was still occuring. One hour ago i unplugged the battery from my computer, because i thought that maybe i had a blaster worm, and then reformatted. I tried to play ET after this, and the problem still occured. I am flat out of ideas and i need any suggestions that i can get. Here are some pictures of my lagometer if that helps.

Thanks for your help,
Homeskillet

PC Specs?

Has it always done it, or is this something that only started recently?

ETpro, Vanilla ET and Shrub all the same?

Does it happen on a non-PB server?

Type of connection?
Up/download bandwidth?
Current values of rate, cl_maxpackets cl_packetdup and snaps?
Does it happen on all servers?

Try running PingPlotter to an ET server and see if it looks the same as when running ET.

not on pipex or something by any chance? :frowning:

mines being crappy in a less-regular but more extreme way:

it’s fine most of the time i’ll just get that maybe a dozen times in a 30min map.

My computer specs are: Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz processor, 512 mb of ram, gforce4 video card(64 mb).
I have tried playing the game unpatched and patched, and the problem occurs on both situations.
It has just started recently, it all started when one night i was trying to hook up xbox live(yeah, doesnt really make much sense), and when i tried to play et later that night, i was spiking.
My connection is cable, and this problem happens on all servers.
cl_maxpackets:30, snaps:20, cl_packetdup:1
Im running a stock et config atm, so thats why all these values are set at default.

I believe this is something new with Punkbuster.
I also started getting lag spikes within the last few weeks. I changed pb_sleep setting to see if that would help, and sure enough-the interval of the spikes changed. And i’m also starting to get PB Init problems. I haven’t had any for a long time. I’m going to do some more checking around just to be sure.
Edit: two new pb versions were released on friday. Run pbweb and update your pb files.

Are you on a network with a router?
I’ve tried 3 different routers (stayed with each for a period of months) and I’ve noticed that some have lag spikes more often than others.
The one I’m using now is really bad, I can go 999 for a while, come back for a second then go 999 again
